Company of Georgia Associates,
will head the American Cancer
Society’s Education-Funds Cru- '
sade in Georgia for the second
year.
Mr. Avary’s appointment as
state chairman of the 1963 Edu
cation-Funds Crusade was an
nounced today by Porter W.
Carswell of Waynesboro, presi
dent of the Cancer Society’s
Georgia Division. Mr. Carswell
said the Cancer Crusade would

Control Month.”
As state crusade chairman Mr.
Avary will lead the enlistment
of key business and civic leaders
to organize and conduct the
crusade in every county. He will
conduct a series of “Better Our
Best in ’63” planning conferences
in strategic cities throughout the
state beginning in February,
according to Mr. Carswell.
Mr. Avery’s conferences tenta

Brunswick, Valdosta, Albany,
Rome, Gainesville, Augusta, Sa

their Christmas money with the
children who would otherwise
have only sorrow for Christmas.
All of the city was not covered
by the Jaycees because of the
fact that manpower was short.
Anyone willing to help out by
contributing should contact the
Jaycees. President E. M. Gault
ney Jr. will be glad to contact
someone to come by your home
to pick the money up. If you wish
you may bring it yourself. Con

evening for the place at which
you can leave the contribution.
The Jaycees wish to thank the
citizens of Forest Park once
again, as they have many times
in the past, for the co-operation
shown the Jaycees in any project
they undertake. By co-operating
with this club or any other com
munity club you help yourself to
build a bigger, more beautiful,
and closer related community.

SECTION I
Atlanta. Volunteer crusade lead
ers from surrounding counties
will be invited to these.
In accepting the chairmanship,
Mr. Avary said, “I consider can
cer to be the most urgent health
problem in our nation today, and
my plan is to begin now to or
ganize the powerful volunteer
force that we must have to make
this 1963 Education-Funds Cru
sade the greatest our state has
ever seen. We hope to have up
wards of 90,000 Georgia volun
teers working in this, crusade.
“The tragic toll cancer claims
in untimely deaths, human suf
fering, and economic loss makes
the fight against cancer a per
sonal responsibility for every
man and woman in Georgia.
Each of us can do our part by
joining the American Cancer
Society in its fight to conquer
cancer.”
He pointed out that at the
present rate cancer will strike
more than 1,000,000 people now
living in Georgia, and that Geor
gians are developing new can
cers at the rate of 24 each day,
one every hour.
“We place strong emphasis on
our volunteers informing people
how to guard against needless
cancer death while they are rais
ing funds,” Mr. Avary said. “Our
doctors tell us that today one
half of those who cancer strikes
can be cured if the disease is
detected and properly treated in
the early stage. We know that
this educational part of our
crusade does save lives from can
cer.”
He said the funds raised would
help finance the Society’s three
pronged program of research,
earlier treatment education, and
services to needy cancer patients.
Mr. Avery is a native of West
Point, Georgia. He has been in
the banking field since 1922,
joining the Trust Company of
