^ ar Jesus ’ parents went to Jerusalem for the
least ot the Passover. The year Jesus was twelve they went
Tt a ,£ w ^ h many other people. Afterward, they
started back home but Jesus lingered behind in Jerusalem.
Joseph and Mary supposed he was in the group until that
night when they could not find
him.
They went back to Jerusalem
and after searching for three
days found him in the temple.
He was with the teachers, listen
ing to their conversations and
asking them questions. These
men were surprised at how much
he understood and the answers
he gave. When Joseph and Mary
saw Jesus, they could hardly be
lieve it. and Mary said, “Son, why
hast thou thus dealt with us?

behold, thy father and I have
sought thee sorrowing.”
Jesus replied, “How is it that
ye sought me? wist ye not that I
must be about my Father’s busi
ness?” But his parents did not
understand. He then went back
home with them and was an
' obedient son; but his mother
wondered about the meaning of
many of the things he said.
And Jesus grew in mind and
body and in his relations with
God and.men.
In the fifteenth year of the
reign of Tiberius Caesar, when
Jesus was about thirty years of
age, John the Baptist came to
the Jordan, crying: “Repent:
for the Kingdom of Heaven is at
hand.”
Large crowds came to hear
John preach, confessed their sins
and were baptized by him in the
Jordan river. John wore a cam
el’s hair coat and a skirt made
out of skin. He ate locusts and
wild honey.
When he saw so many of the
Pharisees and Sadducees come to
hear him, he said to them, “O
generation of vipers, who hath
warned you to flee from the
wrath to come? Bring forth
therefore fruits meet for repent
ance.”
The people asked him, "What
shall we do?”
He answered them, “He that
hath two coats, let him impart
to him that hath none; and he
that hath meat, let him do like-

; wise.”
: Also, tax collectors came to
! him to be baptized and they
asked him, “Master, what shall
we do?” He replied, “Exact no
more than that which is ap
pointed you.”
Likewise the soldiers asked
him, “What shall we do?” He
said to them. “Do violence to no
man, neither'accuse any falsely;
and be content with your wages.”
As the people were expecting
great things from John, and
wondering if he were Christ, he
said the them, “I indeed baptize j
you with water; but one mightier
than I cometh, the latchet of
whose shoes I am not worthy to
unloose; he shall baptize you
with the Holy Ghost and with
fire.”
Jesus came from Galilee to
John at the Jordan to be bap
tized. John discouraged him, say
ing, “I have need to be baptized
of thee, and comest thou to me?”
Jesus replied, “Suffer it to be
so now, for thus it becometh us
to fulfill all righteousness.”
Then John baptized him and,
when Jesus came out of the
water, the heavens opened up
and he saw the Spirit of God
coming down like a dove and
lighting upon him. Then a voice
from heaven said, “This is my
beloved Son, in whom I am well
pleased.”
At this time Jesus was about
thirty years of-age.
Afterward Jesus felt led by the
Spirit to get away into the wil
derness. There he was tempted
by the devil. He went without
food for forty days and nights
and he became very hungry.
Then the tempter came to him
and said, “If thou be the Son of
God, command that these stones
be made bread.” Jesus answered
him, “It is written, Man shall
not live by bread alone, but by
every word that proceedeth out
of the mouth of God.”
Then the devil took him up on
a high mountain and showed
him all the kingdoms of the
world in a moment of time. The
devil said to him, “All this power
will I give thee, and the glory of
them: for that is delivered unto
me; and to whomsoever I will I
give it. If thou therefore wilt
worship me, all shall be thine”.
Jesus replied, “Get thee behind
me, Satan: for it is written, Thou
shalt worship the Lord thy God,

Then the devil brought Jesus
to Jerusalem, set him on a
pinnacle of the temple and said
to him, “If thou be the Son of
God, cast thyself down from
hence: for it is written, He shall
give his angels charge over thee,
to keep thee: and in their hands
they shall bear thee up, least
at any time thou dash thy foot
against a stone.”
Jesus answered. “It is said,
Thou shalt not tempt the Lord
thy God.”
When the devil ended these
temptations, he left him for the
time being. Then angels came
and ministered unto him. Jesus
returned to Galilee in the power
of the spirit and news about him
went throughout the country
side. He taught in their syno
gogues and was praised by all.
