that The Free Press recognized
the outstanding talents and
good works of the Fountain

the county’s finest citizens and
greatest assets for the last 11
years. He is a former Morehouse
basketball star, and he has a

to Europe.
Tom Stanford, one of Forest
Park's great businessmen—a
man with deep roots in all of
Clayton County—did an exten
sive face lifting job on Stan
ford’s of Forest Park, and the
result was display windows as
attractive as any to be found in
Greater Atlanta, and inside, the
new style of merchandising dis
play was also strictly “uptown.”
The shoe shop in combination
with the department store
matched the business in the
overall operation.
On Christmas Day our hearts
were heavy and stricken with
grief when Mrs. Stanford’s won

son Clarke of Jonesboro—passed
away after an operation for a
twisted hernia. Mrs. Clarke, 72,
had been librarian in Jonesboro
for many years, and she worked
almost up to the day of her op

grieved over this tragedy in an
otherwise joyous Yuletide sea

Then, too, a couple of lesser
privileged youngsters, in search
of a Christmas tree, walked on
thin ice on a lake a mile west of
Riverdale, and drowned the
week before Christmas. This
also cast a pall of despondency
over the area.

knocked out of a package beer
operation by a straw ballot ref
erendum, but was given a per
mit to sell wine, and it is be
lieved he holds Clayton County’s
only wine permit. The suit,
actually for $-4 million, was
delivered in a Schenley whiskey
carton.
A hearing on this suit will be
held before Superior Court
Judge Harold Banke January 14.
Defense lawyers are Bruce Ed
wards, twice defeated candidate
for Comptroller General, and a
fellow named O’Neal, Jr., who
used to be an Atlanta law asso
ciate of Solicitor D. M. Johnson,
who had been hailed before the
Grievance Committee of the
Atlanta Bar Association during
the latter weeks of the old year,
and disposition of this matter
will be known in due time.
During 1962 The Clayton Coun
ty Commissioners adhered to the
letter of the law and stripped
Judge and Solicitor of help in
their offices, for the legislative
act setting up the Clayton Judi
cial Circuit did not provide for
employees to be paid by taxpay
ers’ money. In fact, no provision
was made for any help at all.
It also was in 1962 that So
licitor Johnson challenged the
validity of the act in a court
case, attempted to have it
changed, but he lost, of course,
as any child knows that a legis
lative act cannot be changed
except by the introduction of
another act at the next legisla
tive session in January, 1963.
Also, Mayor W. Reid Puckett
of Forest Park ran against E.
Alvin Foster for Senator from
this district, and when he lost
he was ill-advised to challenge
the result, and in a contest
against the Democratic Execu
tive Committee, he looked
around and found none of his
advisors there, and he was alone
when the Democratic Executive
Committee ruled, in record time,
that he had no grounds for a
case. It had been charged some
one passed out political ma
terials in behalf of Foster too
close to the polls. Someone re
marked that the last time Loy
Dickson ran for Sheriff, he had
a Coke box of free Cokes sitting
upstairs above the Courthouse
polling place, and probably his
election could have been con
tested if someone had wanted to
make an issue of it.

The Year 1963 spreads ahead

a golden glow over future busi

all odds, be the greatest year
yet!
We’re glad there will be no
Governor’s election in 1963, so
there won’t be a repeat of a his- (
toric Journalism “First”. The
I Forest Park News endorsed
BOTH candidates — one week
Sanders and the following week
Griffin, in a front page edi
torial. It had never happened
before in the history of Ameri
can Journalism.
Speak kindly of the candidate,
He’ll do his best to win
And labor to promote the State
And all his friends and kin.
In sands of time let him make
tracks
Which notice must deserve
And if ability he lacks,
At least admire his nerve.
