Family Care Seeks Larger Budget
For County Welfare Needs in '63
It was revealed at the annual meeting of Family Care of Clayton County at Farmers
Market Cafeteria assembly room Wednesday night, that the $10,240 alloted by Greater
Atlanta United Appeal, for local operation is not nearly enough to meet the needs of this
great, growing area in 1963. A meeting with the Budget Committee has been requested.
A former president who was elected to serve another term in the year ahead, W. H.
(Bill) Fleming of Forest Park,
said that “every effort will be ■
made to obtain more money for
Family Care needs in the new
year.”
Mr. Fleming praised retiring
President Walter Phillips as a
“dedicated” citizen of Forest
Park who had given unselfishly
of himself throughout the last
years, and “I only wish he
could have continued for another
year.”
In his report of activities in
1962, Mr. Phillips said that Fam- i
ily Care handled 117 cases in-,
volving 483 families, and “33!

Surplus commodities (govern
ment) in the amount of $42,756
were distributed by Family Care,
acting as the distributor of gov
ernment foodstuffs to needy peo
ple in Clayton County.
“We averaged serving 950 per
sons a month in the distribution
of surplus commodities,” he
added. Staples included flour,
meal, rice, powered milk, cheese,
peanut butter, but no regular
। butter because of a refrigeration
। problem.
A total of $4,545 was spent on
assistance to families.
Mr. Phillips’ regular term of
’ office was extended a year, so
that he served, actually two and
one-half years, and he admitted
• that “I missed a few nights sleep
because of people we could not
t help in material and spiritual
, ways. Those conditions are with
, us and we will alleviate them
. whenever we can.”
There was one particular
i heart-rending case in which 14
children were found all in one

past freezing weather.
Mrs. Ruth Johnson, executive
secretgry in charge of Clayton
County Family Care office in
j Forest Park, pointed out that
surplus commodities are dis

office also receives all types of
used clothing, shoes, furniture
and other items for distribution.
