The amount of soil loss by

This is a progressive step for
landowners and operators in
Georgia to be able to compare
soil loss in their fields under
different methods of erosion

Soil Loss Prediction, a new
working tool tailored to each
county in the state, has been
placed in Soil Conservation
Service Offices in all counties.
Tom W. Cole, Work Unit Con
servationist in Clayton County
assisting the Upper Ocmulgee
River Soil and Water Conserva
tion District, has been trained
in the use of Soil Loss Prediction
and will be able to use it in
helping landowners and oper
ators plan their conservation
programs for their land, stated
Chapman.
Straight row farming of con
tinuous cultivated row crops
without adequate erosion con
trol is one of the problems in
Georgia agriculture today. As an
example, Soil Loss Prediction
shows that straight row con
tinuous corn yielding 45 bushels
per acre on Tifton soil, 3 percent
slope, with 300 foot slope length
in Tift County would lose 20 tons
of soil per acre per year. This is
16 tons per acre more than the
allowable 4 tons per acre on this
type of soil under these condi
tions. If terracing and contour
cultivation is added and the
same yield of corn is grown on
the same field, the soil loss per
acre would be slightly over one
ton in excess of the 4 tons allow
able. In both examples, corn
stalks are rotary mowed after

Winter Protection for
Young Pecan Trees
By CHARLES S. TUCKER ]
County Agent 1
Pecan trees that have been (
transplanted or that will be
transplanted this winter should
be protected from extremely j
low temperatures by mounding ,
soil around the tree trunk up .
to a height of 10 to 15 inches. ■
Old sawdust at the rate of ।
one-half bushel per tree will do
the same job. ।
Pecan trees that have been
growing rapidly and are less
than four years old should re- ,
ceive the same type protection.
When, temperatures reach
near zero, there is a possibility ;
of killing the above-ground por
tion of pecan trees. By mound
ing soil or sawdust around the
corn is harvested and left on the
surface of land during the
winter.
Chapman pointed out further
in this situation that corn pro
ducing 45 bushels per acre and
small grain in a two-year rota
tion planted in parallel contour
strips without terracing would
hold soil loss to the allowable
4 tons per acre per year.
Since Soil Loss Prediction is
tailored to each county, the
above examples would not nec
essarily be applicable in other
counties. Any landowner or op
erator can get similar informa
tion applicable to his land from
the Soil Conservation Service
technician assisting the local
Soil and Water Conservation
District, Chapman said.
Practices such as contouring,
mulch planting, strip cropping,
grassed waterways, terraces,
field borders, field roads, and
the type of crops grown in rota
tion together with the manage
ment of crop residue effect the
runoff in soil loss in a given
field. It is necessary in conser
vation planning for the land
owner to consider available al
ternatives together with cost in
volved in each and base his
decision on economical methods
of erosion control.
Research in Soil and Water
Conservation by the Agricultural
Research Service together with
long-time Weather Bureau rec
ords compiled by the Weather
Bureau, U. S. Department of
Commerce, has made Soil Loss
Prediction possible. I
