aglow in typical grandmotherly
pride over the arrival of her new
granddaughter, Elizabeth Powell
Harvey. Mrs. Harvey returned
Feb. 6 from a week’s visit in
Memphis welcomning the new
comer. Mr. Harvey plans a later
visit.
Everything’s new to the Junior
Harveys, parents of the baby girl.
They moved into their new home
just two weeks prior to the new
baby’s arrival. The announce

Visit Russia in April
Mrs. Sam McEver of Jonesboro,
Mrs. Byron Holloway of Forest
Park, and Mrs. Edward L. Huie of
Morrow will participate in a spe
cial People to People good will
tour of Russia and other iron
curtain countries this spring.
The purpose of the trip is to
give community leaders and pro
fessional women of Georgia an
opportunity to carry a message
of good will to the people of both
Western and Eastern Europe.
During the trip the group will
see and inspect typical idustrial
and business operations, learn
and compare methods and pro
cedures, visit with the people of
the different countries in which
they travel and otherwise assist
to implement the aims and pur
poses of the United States cul-

support the cause of world peace

and better relations among the
people of different countries.
The Georgia group will leave
the Atlanta airport about noon
on Sunday, April 26. After a
briefing in New York City they
will board a huge trans-ocean
jet for Brussels, Belgium. From
Brussels they will travel to
Moscow and then Krasnodar in
the Soviet Union; Warsaw, Po
land; Budapest, Hungary; East

The February meeting of the
BPW Club was held February 4
at the Atlanta Army Depot Of
ficer’s Club. Mrs. Era Shields,
president, presided. Mrs. Shields
gave an interesting report on the
State Board Meeting held in
Albany, Georgia on January
25-26, theme being “Leadership
—A Responsibility of Full Part
nership.” Dr. Frances White
head, National Recording Secre
tary, assisted by Mrs. Mamie K.
Taylor, National Membership
Chairman, presented the Lead
ership Workshop.
Mrs. Beatrice H. Finch, a new
member, was welcomed into the
club.
Mrs. Virginia Holland pre
sented a BPW pin with gavel to
Mrs. Era Shields on behalf of
the club. The gold pin was beau-

city and during their visits will
meet members of the American
embassy staffs and members of
this country’s consulates.
The group will be in Moscow
for the three-day May Day cele
bration which is the most out
standing event to take place in
the Soviet Union each year. It is
an event which, up until re
cently, was seldom witnessed by
Americans.
The Georgians will return to
New York on Saturday, May 16,
and fly from New York back
home that evening.

1951 in honor of Judge Sarah T.
Hughes in order to increase
understanding between business
and professional women of
United States and other coun
tries. U. S. District Judge Sarah
T. Hughes, a former National
BPW Federation president and
an appointee by the late Presi
dent Kennedy, became the first
woman to administer the oath of
office to a President of the
United States when she swore
in President Johnson in Dallas,
Texas on November 22, 1963.
The International Theme was
emphasized by the foreign cos
tumes worn by the World Af
fairs Committee members: Mrs.
Mary Ruth Tolar, Mrs. Sara
Puckett, Mrs. Lucy Jenkins, Mrs.
Ann Hamilton, Mrs. Rno Hicks,
Mrs. Tomme Geeslin and Mrs.
Owensby. Mrs. Margaret Cald
well presented each member
present with a Yen, a monetary
unit of Japan. Place cards were
uniquely decorated with foreign
stamps and Spanish words and
phrases. “DEAR WORLD” by
Dan Valentine, suitable for
framing, was presented to those
present.
