PLANS APPROVED FOR NEW BANK OF JONESBORO BUILDING
Groundbreaking for the Bank of Jonesboro’s new building, to be located at the
corner of Smith and Main Streets, Jonesboro, will take place some time late in
March, according to C. S. Conklin, President of the Bank. It is expected that the
building will be ready for occupancy this summer. The plans provide for ample
off-street parking, drive-in windows and both day and night depositories for the
convenience of customers. Architects for the new building are Tomberlin and
Beauty Contest Entry

Jonesboro Jaycees. Mr. Barber,

5 TV is a Clayton County resi
dent.
It is expected that Jonesboro
High Auditorium will have SRO
on the night of April 3 at 8
o’clock. Mr. Barber, plus a bevy
of talented beauties have all the
markings of a sell-out perform
ance. An inspiring feature to the
contestants is that they will each
be assigned a personal hostess.
The Jayceetes (wives of the Jay
cees) will render this valuable
service to lend their moral sup
port to the entrants.

FOREST PARK HEALTH CENTER TO BE DEDICATED
Dr. Burch J. Roberts, Director of the Clayton
County Health Department, announces that
the County Board of Health and the County
Commissioners will formally dedicate the new
Forest Park Health Center on March 22, 1964
at 5:00 p.m. The dedication will take place at
the new health center located at the corner of
Central Avenue and Pine Street in Forest Park.

College. Her special training is
piano, dancing and drama. She
will play the piano as her talent
in the pageant. She is a brown
ette with hazel eyes and is five
feet, six inches and weighs 120
pounds. She enjoys all sports.
She is on the tennis team at
school, Tri-Hi-Y, Future Teach
- ers of America, Pep and Dra
matic Club.
Alice Lynn Reed, 17-year-old
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ran
dall H. Reed, O’Hara Drive,
Jonesboro, is a senior of Jones
boro High School. Her special
training includes piano, organ
and saxaphone. She hopes to
: continue her education at North
Georgia College. For her special
talent in the pageant she will
: play the piano.
She is in the Jonesboro band,
Future Teachers of America As
' sociation, Beta Club and Debate
Club. Her favorite hobbies are
, water skiing, swimming and
horseback riding. She is a five
. foot, seven and one-half inch
blond with blue eyes.

The public is cordially invited to attend this
dedication. Following the dedication there will
be a tour of the new facility. The new center
will offer complete health department services
to the residents of the Forest Park area. It will
be completely staffed and will offer services to
the public from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday
through Friday.
Sheetz, who have designed many bank buildings in recent years. There will be
approximately 8500 square feet in the building and included in the plans is a
large Conference Room for the use of civic groups. The property will be beauti
fully landscaped and the building equipped to provide the “Friendly Full-Service
Banking” for which the Bank of Jonesboro is known.

Dr. P. D. Miller Set to
Preach Jonesboro Revival
Dr. P. D. Miller, Executive
Secretary for Church Extension
in the Presbyterian Church, US,
will preach a Pre-Easter revival
at the Jonesboro Presbyterian
Church. Dr. Miller is a native of
Franklin County in Northeast
Georgia. He received his college
education at Davidson and was
awarded his BA and DD degrees.
He attended Union Theological
Seminary, Richmond, Va„ where
he received his BD and ThM.
His first ministerial work was
as an evangelist in Rabun
County, Georgia. He has served
several prominent churches in
cluding the Druid Hills Presby
terian Church, Atlanta, where
he was serving when appointed

Bank of Forest Park
Ups Capital Stock
At a meeting held Tuesday,
March 12, the shareholders of
the Bank of Forest Park ap
proved an increase in the capi
tal stock from 20,000 shares to
28,000 shares through the sale of
7,000 additional shares and the
payment of a stock dividend in
the amount of 1,000 shares. This
will increase the capital stock
total to $280,000.00, and the sur
plus to $135,000.00. Total capital
accounts, including undivided
profits will be over $450,000.00.
Charles Duncan, president,
stated that it is a policy of the
bank to offer full-service bank
ing to this area. This includes
such services as public relations,
investments, loans, savin g s,
checking accounts, and team as
sistance in old, new and ex
panded Industries in Clayton
to his present position.
The revival will begin each
evening at 7:30 beginning on
Sunday, March 22, and con
tinuing through Friday, March
27. The service on March 27 will
be a “Good Friday” Communion
Serivce.

Nearing. Mr. Nearing is a min
isterial student at Columbia
Theological Seminary, Decatur.

Star Student
For Clayton
Is Cathie Cowan
Miss Cathie Cowan, a Jones
boro High School senior, has
been selected 1964 Star student
of Clayton County.
She selected teacher Fred
Smith as the instructor who
made the greatest contribution
to her scholastic achievement.
She is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Orris Cowan of Ellenwood.
Miss Cowan is a National
Merit Scholarship finalist, presi
dent of the Beta Club, pianist at
the Ellenwood Methodist Church
and has been a majorette for
five years.
She plans to enroll at Emory
University.

This increase will give the

total capital of any bank in
Clayton County, according to
Mr. Duncan, and will make it
possible to fully serve the bank
ing needs of this area.

Airport Runway to
Displace 750 Families
Some 700 to 800 homes of
Clayton Countians will be torn
down or moved to other loca
tions as a result of the Atlanta
Airport's $15,000,000 runway ex
tension program which is al
ready under way.
The program calls for building
a new 8,000-foot runway parallel
to the present east-west run
way; extending the present
7,000-foot east-west runway to
10,000 feet, and extending the
present 7,840-foot northwest
southeast runway to 9,200. Vir
tually all of these strips is now
and will be in Clayton County
when the work is finished.
Some 8,000 people of College
Park are in North Clayton
County and it is from this num
ber that 700 to 800 homes will be
demolished or moved away.
Many other residents are com
plaining that they will be caught
between the two runways, with
their noises, inconveniences and
dangers, and others are com
plaining that the runways are
too near them either to the
North or the South.
Clayton County stands to lose
three of its industries by the
airport deal. They are Hugh
Steel Co., Vulcan Materials Co.
and Stith Equipment Co., all on
Clark Howell Highway.

WHEREAS, the Order of DeMolay is composed of young men |
' fourteen to twenty-one years of age, who are b
seeking to become the better citizens of tomor
row, by developing those laudable virtues making
up the character of all good men; and
WHEREAS, the organization was founded by Frank S. Land
during the year 1919, at Kansas City, Missouri,
and now has more than 2,400 chapters around
