To Wed Robert 11. Fortner
Mrs. Elizabeth J. Abbott an
nounces the engagement of her
daughter, Susan Matthews, to
Robert H. Fortner, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Truman L. Fortner,
of Forest Park. Miss Abbott is
the daughter of the late Walter
E. Abbott of Smyrna.
Miss Abbott, a graduate of
Campbell High School, attended
Shorter College in Rome where
she was a member of the Euno
mian Society. She is presently
employed in Atlanta.
Mr. Fortner graduated from
Forest Park High School and
presently attends Shorter Col
lege where he is a member of
the Phi Theta Tau fraternity.
The wedding will take place
on June 6 in the chapel of the
First Baptist Church of Smyrna.
After the wedding the couple
will reside in Rome, Georgia.

familiar with the real issues in
volved, are speaking out against
this philosophy—to their con
gressmen, and at the ballot box,

throughout the country.”
The Georgia senator was prin
cipal speaker Monday night at
a dinner here to raise funds for
a special class for the teaching
and training of educable men
tally retarded children. The
project is being sponsored by the
Rockdale County Parent-Teach
er Association, working in con
junction with the Board of Edu
cation and other local civic or
ganizations.
“The American people stand
firmly behind the principle that
all citizens are entitled to the
full and unhindered enjoyment
of their constitutional rights.
But they will not have forced
upon them the proposition that
some citizens are entitled to
more rights than others,” Sen
ator Talmadge asserted.

Wanda Joyce Petriello
To Wed Mr. Fincher
Mr, and Mrs. J. E. Petriello of
Lake City announce the engage
ment of their daughter, Wanda
Joyce, to Donald Henry Fincher,
son of Mrs. George Mincey of
Forest Park and Mr. Henry Man
son Fincher of Atlanta.
Wanda Joyce will graduate
from Forest Park High School

4-H'ers Judge Livestock
Clayton County was well rep
resented in Athens on Saturday,
May 16, at the District Livestock
Judging Contest.
Approximately 300 4-H Club
members from North, Northeast
and Northwest Georgia judged
in the contest. There were eight
classes of animals to judge
which included: Duroc Guilts,
Duroc Market Hogs, Hampshire
Market Hogs, Market Steers, An
gus Heifers, Hereford Bulls,
Hampshire Ewes and Fat Lambs.

mals, the 4-H’ers had to “give
reasons”, or tell why they placed
the animals as they did on three

Soil Conservation Activities

encourage people to seek shade
of green trees, ponds of water ‘
for fishing, boating, swimming :
and other forms of recreation. 1
Clayton County has over 200 (
ponds of water. Thirty of these 1
ponds are for fishing on a fee
basis. Sixteen of these have fish- ’
ing and other types of recrea
tion as swimming with sandy !
beaches, places to bring picnic
lunches, boating, wildlife and
nature trails with many others.
The Upper Ocmulgee River Dis
trict Supervisors have assisted
cooperating farmers and land
owners with site selection, de
sign surveys, supervision and
checking of the construction
stocking with fish of 174 of these
ponds.
Ponds are one of the major
soil and water conservation prac
tices planned when preparing a
complete basic soil and water
conservation plan for farms and
other areas of land. Pond help
in many ways by being the best,
most practical and profitable
landuse for certain areas that
are too wet for cropland, grass
land, woodland or building sites.
