Soil Conservation Activities
B. A. Barnette is prepar
ing seven acres of land on
his farm near Jonesboro to
be seeded to Fescue-Clover
this Fall. This is one of the
soil and water conservation
practices planned for his
farm in cooperation with
the Upper Ocmulgee River
District Supervisors.
Prior to his recently pur
chasing this 25 acre farm
this area was abandoned
pasture land. Scrub trees,
bushes and briars were tak
ing-over the common ber
muda and native lespedeza.
This upland area of bench
terraced land has lost over
75 percent of the normal
topsoil to sheet and gully
erosion.
Now, trees and other ob
structions have been re
moved. Terraces leveled with
th average slope to permit
mowing of hay and combin
ing of seed. He is applying
fertilizer and lime according
to soil test to get best results
from the stand and growth.

ATLANTA ARMY DEPOT — COMMENDATION FOR AIR
FORCE WIFE — Mrs. John A. Adams is presented official
commendation by Col. Roland Savilla, Depot Commander.
Left, Lt. Col. Adams, U. S. Air Force; right, Mrs. Mills B.
McAfee, Publicity Chairman, Officers Wives Club. Mrs.
Adams was commended for her community work since
her husband’s assignment began at the Depot in Septem
ber 1962, the certificate stating in part: “Her selfless
dedication in any endeavor involving the welfare of her
fellowman has been an inspiration to all who have come
to know her.” Her community activities have included
hundreds of hours of Red Cross volunteer service and
participation in welfare programs of the Officers Wives
Club. Col. and Mrs. Adams, natives of Norcross, will leave
soon with their two sons for assignment in Central
America. (U.S. Army Photo)
conservation practices he
established last year are a
five acre farm pond. The
pond is stocked, and being
properly fertilized. Dam and
spillway together with bor
row areas have been seeded
to control erosion. He sloped
the public road bank and
established a good stand of
fescue last Fall. To any one
passing this green bank
looked much better than the
eroded, red clay backslope.
In passing Jonnie Re n
fore’s cultivated field on the
East side of Georgia High
way No. 3 it is a good sight
to see his rows on the con
tour and terraces doing a
good job of controlling ero
sion. His corn and other
crops have a healthier green
look, with promise of larger
yields. Could this be due to
terrace and contour rows
slowing run-o f f water
whereby the soil retained
more resulting in better use
of fertilizer? Plants did not
look wilted during hot,dry
weather.

A new coach, a new sched
ule and a new outlook are
the optimistic prospects fac
ing Forest Park fans for the
1966 grid season. Hard hit by
graduation the Panthers re
turn only 16 members of the
1965 squad which rolled up a
1-6 mark under departed
Coach Fred Bowers.
Coach Carl Madison, an
import from Milton, Fla., was
mildly disappointed when
only 40 hopefuls reported for
drills Monday. He believes,
however, this was due to the
fact that “Forest Park hasn’t
had a winner in the past few
years”. He also stated “once
we start winning we’ll have
twice that number coming
out every year”.
The new coach, along with
line coach Kenneth Avinger
and backfield coach John
Smith, spent the first few
days on conditioning and
timing. More of the same is
the promise until August 16
when the Panthers don pads
for the first time.
A few surprises are
planned by Coach Madison
for the new season. Among
these are plans to “put the
football in the air” and a
more diversified attack. Also
a few position shifts are in
store for the upcoming sea
son.
Returning from the ’65
squad are seniors Steve But
ler, E; Tommy Burge, C;
Mike Jenkins, FB; Dennis
McCollum, E; Dave Harde
man, G; Dwight Peppers,
QB; Bill Prichett, HB; Tom
my Hutto, HB; Mike Flynn,
HB, Chris Phillips, HB, and
juniors Freddy Bowers, HB;
Ronnie Cates, HB; Barry
Gable, G, and Jerry Lamb,
G. Also available are a num
ber of bright prospects up
from the B team after a year
of seasoning.
Although Ken Frock, Don
nie Johnson, Warren
Vaughan, Mike Vaughan,
Danny Payne, Wayne Boling,
Glenn Baker, Darrell Cham
bers, Tommy Broadwell, Phil
Davidson, Ronnie Thompson
and Latson Garing will be
j sorely missed, Coach Madi
। son believes “with hard work
| an d all-out determination
Forest Park can field a re
i spectable team”. If the Park
j ers are to have a “respect
able” season they will be
forced to do it the hard way.
' Besides meeting old foes
North Clayton, Jonesboro,
! R. E. Lee and Griffin, the
। Panthers must go into battle
* with new enemies North
Fulton, Grady, Southwest,
Woodward Academy (for
merly GMA), Therrell and
Tucker.
Indeed Forest Park Is
faced with a hard road but
■ since football games are
| won with desire, hustle and
determination a winning
season is not out of the ques
tion. In the past stranger
things have happened!
