'Caravan' Reaps
Good Will for
Atlanta Braves
The Braves went out of
their way last month to
prove they belong not only
to Atlanta, but to all of
Dixie as well.
For the second year, the
Braves’ ‘Caravan’ of good
will carried players and
front office personnel to
five states and 21 cities in
26 days.
Comprising a half-dozen
or so representatives, the
Caravans departed Atlanta
Stadium each morning
only two of the trips were
overnight affairs—for cities
in Georgia, North and South
Carolina, Alabama and Ten
nessee.
The day usually began
with a luncheon for the
press, plus sponsors and
local station representatives
of Braves’ radio and tele
vision broadcasts, minor
league officials, local ticket
salesmen, and ballplayers
past and present.
After the luncheons—
which usually ended with a
lively question-answer ses
sion between players and
press—the Braves visited
hospitals, orphanages, crip
pled children’s homes, and
schools.
Ernie Johnson, who di
rected the 1967 Caravan
along with Eddie Glennon,
director of area ticket sales,
estimates that the Braves
visited 3,500 patients at nu
merous hospitals and gave
away 2,500 plastic, mono
grammed baseballs and an
other 2,000 or so autograph
albums.
One of the most touching
moments of the 1967 Cara
van for Johnson, a former
Braves’ pitcher, came while
visiting a home for blind
and deaf children In Spar
tanburg, S. C. As pitchers
Clay Carroll and Pat Jarvis
and centerflelder Mack
Jones addressed the deaf
children about baseball and
the Braves, an attendant in
terpreted their greeting with
* sign language.
Johnson also remembers
touching moments when
the Caravan visited Viet
Nam veterans at the Char
leston, S. C. naval hospital
and the Army hospital at
Fort Benning, Ga.
Others recalled seeing Joe
Torre, who is the Braves’
acknowledged champion at
warming the hearts of chil
dren, bending over a crippled
child in a Birmingham, Ala
bama hospital. The child
wore a heavy cast from her
waist to her neck. Torre,
“The Best Catcher In Base
ball,” whispered, "I wear one
of those, too, you know.”

ERIC WOODWARD TALKS
(Continued From Page 1)
Mr. Woodward further
stated that the Chiefs will
exist as a subsidiary of the
Atlanta Braves and he
strongly made the point that
there will be no Americani
zation of the same. It will
be played as it is played in
Italy where it is not unusual r
to see a moat between the
referee and the players; and
as it is played in Brazil
where the fever pitch of the
game itself often erupts into
riots. ,
Mr. Woodward encoun
tered a very lively question
and answer session during
which he said that the At
lanta soccer field will meas
ure 115 by 75 yards. Mr.
Woodward also spoke of soc
cer stars and mentioned
Brazil’s top star saying that
this star had become such a
national asset that he can’t
leave Brazil—however he
makes $500,000 a year for
playing soccer and not leav
ing Brazil!
