Roselle Addresses
Half Century Club
ATLANTA ARMY DEPOT
—Bert Roselle of WSB-TV
appeared as guest speaker at
the last meeting of the De
pot Half Century Cub.
Speaking on courage and
devotion to duty, he said: “A
time is certain to come to
all of us when the path is
rough and it seems impossi
ble to go on. These are times
which call for real courage
and devotion to duty.”
Mr. Roselle cited as an ex
ample a happening at WSB
TV on the previous night.
Hal Suit, WSB-TV associate
news director, was in the
midst of a news “feed” to
New York. He was suddenly
stricken with a severe pain
in the chest. It grew to such
intensity that he could not
see the script.
“Hal Suit fought his way
through,” Mr. Roselle said.
“Fortunate:y, the first take
was good. When New York
said, ‘That’s good. All clear,’
Hal Suit collapsed at the
microphone. He’d been
.stricken with a heart at
tack. This, I wanted to relate
to you as an example of real
courage and devotion to
duty. I’m sure you, too, have
faced difficult situations,
and I want to say my hat is
off to all who do the job they
have to do, whatever the
odds.”
Commenting on television
as a news medium, Mr. Ro
selle said: “Television is an
instantaneous news medium.
It takes you there. Through
television, the world is a
window you can be an eye
witness to history. Further,
you allow us to come into
your home. This is a great
responsibility, we feel it, and
we appreciate it.”

or where they live. And we
must put more children in
school and keep them there

Our dropout rate is still a

Senator Talmadge said
education is primarily the

BROOM SELECTION
A good broom is essential
in all homes even if you
do have carpeting and a
vacuum cleaner, according
to Extension home econ

Georgia. Remember there
are porches, garages and
walkways to be swept, and a
vacuum cleaner cannot do
these jobs. Select a broom
that is light in weight and
easy to handle.

Camping Fun
What tastes better than
food cooked over an open
fire? Especially when eaten
in the shade of pines in mid
day, or in the dew of an
early morning. What is more
fun that singing songs old
and new, around a campfire,
or sleeping beneath a blan
ket of stars? There is noth
ing that girls enjoy more
than camping. The Girl
Scout camps throughout
Georgia are purchased and
maintained through the Girl
Scout Cookie Sales. Recent
ly, the Girl Scouts bought a
4,000 acre tract in Cherokee
County, which, when fin
ished will be the largest Girl
Scout Camp in the United
States. Plans call for es
tablished camping, wilder
ness camping, and winter
camping with skiing and
animal tracking. Your pur
chase of Girl Scout Cookies
will help to provide the nec
essary equipment and pay
for the work that must be
done. From March 31st to
April 15th, Juniors, Cadettes,
and Senior Scouts will be
selling cookies. Again this
year we offer four delicious
varieties — chocolate mint,
butter shorties, peanut but
ter sandwiches, and assorted
sandwiches. When that girl
knocks on your door, help to
make her dreams come true,
buy the cookies that made
possible her dream camp
site. Then see the light in
her eyes, and watch that
smile just grow and grow.
Brownie Troop 317 will be
making an exciting visit to
R. L. Mathis Dairy while
the girls in Brownie Troop
398 are going to Grant Park

Junior Troop 19 will be
visiting the Monastery at
Conyers on April Bth. The
girls in Junior Troop 871 are
going to Callaway Gardens,

Last but certainly not
least, Junior Troop 698 is
sending clothing to the Clay-

land reducing soil losses to
erosion to a minimum.
W. S. Turner had terrace
lines surveyed in all acre
field on his farm near Love
joy, last week. He will build
broad base terraces that can
be planted to row or close
growing crops due to the
wide channel and wide
ridge. Terraces will permit
contour cultivation which
slows the flow of run-off
water during excessively
hard rains. A larger volume
of water is absorbed into the
soil resulting in better re
turns from fertilizer, in
creased yields per acre and
more returns to the farmer.
Mr. Turner plans to plant
cotton on this field this sea
son being followed by a soil
building crop to add more
humus and organic matter
to the land.

I did my best, as I am sure
all of you do. This can be
one of the finest and most
successful campaigns in
Clayton County.
“It is an Education-Funds-
Crusade. We want to stress
that cancer is curable when
detected early enough. Why
do we stress facts? To save
lives. We must raise funds
for research and other ac
tivities to save lives.
"Crusade fits us here. A
vigorous campaign against
a public evil. And that, of
course, is cancer.
"Crusaders must be armed
with facts about cancer and
its curability. Arm your
selves with the facts before
telling the people about can
cer and particularly its
curability. Our job in this
crusade is to overcome the
fear of cancer.”
Mr. Hammond declared
that a job well done in the
campaign will give everyone
a good feeling and the re
sult will be the saving of
many lives.
