Hitchcock Is Given
'Vote of Confidence'
The Atlanta Braves ought to have a great year.
The season hasn't started and already Manager Billy
Hitchcock has been given a vote of confidence by Paul
It seems slightly ridiculous that such a manager should
have to receive a vote of confidence before the Braves have
had a chance to play a regular season game in 1967.
Wilt Browning writes—" Why, then, must Hitchcock firm
ly state that he isn’t worried about losing his job? And
what, then, prompted Richards to call the Atlanta writers
aside to announce that Hitchcock is running the Braves?
“The answer to both questions—Richards.
“To the public and the sometimes-too-suspicious press,
the presence of Richards, a former major league manager
who is considered one of the best ’thinking’ men in baseball,
represents a threat to Hitchcock's domain as manager, of
ficially and otherwise, of the Atlanta Braves.”
When Bobby Bragan was relieved as manager late in the
season Richards was available but Hitchcock was named.
That ought to settle the question of who is manager of the
Braves. The players are confident that it’s Hitchcock,

It’s a unique situation that Hitch
cock must be confronted with the
suggestion that the Braves under his
direction must win or look for a new
manager. Hitchcock, it must be
pointed out, is the field manager of
the team that has been the hottest
in championship competition since
he was hired last Aug. 9.
From that point to the end of the
season, the Braves won 33 and lost
18, a streak no team in major league
baseball could match.
