fw’l REMEMBER
I^^BY THE OLD TIMER
From Mrs. Floyd Booker,
Sonora, Kentucky: I don’t sup
pose you would call me an Old
Timer, but I am a grandmother
several times.
I remember so many things
about my childhood that it’s
hard to choose what stands out
the most in my mind.
I attended the one-room
country school heated by a large
coal stove in the middle of the
room. Water was carried from
a spring a mile away. We had
spelling bees and arithmetic
matches on Friday afternoons.
I remember my father’s coun
try store. Everything came in
bulk form and had to be weighed
for sale. Customers brought in
eggs, chickens, wool, sorghum,
all kinds of roots, walnuts and
furs to sell or tradeforgroceries.
The kerosene barrel was a neces
sity as everyone used kerosene
for their lamps.
I can remember going to my
grandmother’s at Thanksgiving
and Christmas on a sled when
snow was too deep to travel by
automobile. Water was carried
from a cave in buckets, for
drinking and for cooking. Itwas
the coldest — and best — water
I have ever tasted. Climbing
over the hay in the barn loft
in search of hen’s nests was a
great thrill.
