PROGRESS REPORT
(Continued from Page 1)
ing the property, construct
ing sidewalks, curbs, and
roadways, and furnishing
utilities to the site accord
ing to the site plan.
Dr. Downs in the Board
of Regents Office stated that
the Junior College will be
opened in September of
1969. We are expecting the
completed site plan in Jan
uary. The Board of Regents
will be responsible for the
taking of bids and the ac
tual construction of the
buildings. The blue prints
have been delayed due to
some changes in the plan
ning of the Board of Re
gents. The Board of Regents
is expecting the Junior Col
lege to eventually house 6,-
000 students. The construc
tion is being planned in
three phases. The Ist phase
will be for 2,000 students
and it is to be constructed
with the 3.3 million dollars
of local money. Phase two
of the building program will
accommodate another 2,000
students. When phase 3 is
constructed, the college will
accommodate an add 1-
tional 2,000. bringing the en
rollment to approximately
6,000 students. All future
cost of construction for
phase 2 and 3 of the build
ing plans will be paid for by
the University System. The
local citizens will not be re
quired to put any additional
funds into the Junior Col
lege program. This has been
the method in which all re
cent Junior Colleges have
been built and expanded by
the University System. Dr.
Downs stated that due to
the proximity of the At
lanta Airport to the Clay
ton County Junior College,
the Board of Regents intend
to construct one of the fin
est and largest Junior Col
leges in the State. Because
of the proximity to the Air
port many conferences and
visitors who are interested
in Junior College programs
will visit the Clayton County
Junior College.
Dr. Downs also stated that
the 90 hours of core curricu
lum work that is required in
the Freshman and Sopho
more years of all the Uni
versity System programs will
be offered in our local col
lege. This work will be
transferrable to any other
institution within the Uni
versity System without loss
of credit. In addition to the
core curriculum the Board of
Regents plans to offer sev
eral terminal programs. The
terminal programs will not
lead toward a four year de
gree. These terminal pro
grams may include courses
to prepare a person for
nursing, dental hygiene,
medical technology, secre
tarial science, police admin
istration, etc. Dr. Downs in
dicated that it would be pos
sible to offer most any type
of terminal program in the
Junior College for which
there is a need in this area.
The exact number of ter
minal programs that will be
offered at the opening of the
College Is not known as of
this date. We have definite
ly requested the program
for nursing, dental hygiene
and medical technology. We
hope this request will be
complied with by the Board
of Regents.

Christ Tells Men to Vent Rage?
By LEWIS LLEWELLYN
Dr. Martin Luther King has done some things of which most of us approve
and has been acclaimed as a great leader of his people.
However, in a recent speech, he advised the members of his race that they
would be mentally healthier if they did not “suppress rage but vent it construc
tively and use its energy peacefully but forcefully to cripple the operations of an
oppressive society.”
Not Christian Teaching
Now, this may be good
strategy for a militant lead
er — or it may not. But it
definitely is not Christian
doctrine.
It may be good psychology
— or it may not. But it is
not good Christianity . . .
And Dr. King is supposed to
be a Christian minister.
You will look in vain in
the Bible for any admonition
by Christ that His followers
should either suppress rage
or vent it upon the victims
of their wrath.
To the Christian, the Bible
says, “Put off all these: an
ger, wrath, malice . . . For
giving one another, if any
man have a quarrel against
any; even as Christ forgave

Too Much to Expect?
It may be too much to ex

But is it too much to ex

How can that teaching
possibly be harmonized with
the advice of Dr. King that
those who follow him should
“not suppress rage but vent
It”? Not Easy to Do
Admittedly, the teachings
of Christ are easier to
preach than to practice —
for members of all races.
The minister who advises
his followers to walk in the
footsteps of the Master, lov
ing and forgiving, may find
that the people do not want
to walk in that direction.
But, if he is a true min
ister of the Gospel, how can
he preach anything else?

Container
For Gifts
On Thursday, December 7,
1967 a container was placed
in Grant City’s Colonial
Store. This box will remain
there for collection of
wrapped gifts to Milledge
ville and Gracewood. They
will have to be turned over’
to Friendship House down
town.
According to the Mental
Health Association, the fol
lowing are only a few of the
many items acceptable: For
men—smoking items, toilet
articles, small personal gifts;
for women—jewelry, make
up, small personal items;
miscellaneous gifts — toys,
books, games, puzzles, rec
ords, stationery and acces
sories, knitting and sewing
articles, candies, cookies and
gum. No glass articles are
permitted. These gifts should
be wrapped and marked for
man, woman or child and if
clothing the size should be
stated.
The Morrow Junior Wom
an’s Club will be responsible
for the handling and care of
these gifts. We are hopeful
everyone including church
groups, civic clubs or schools
will make an extra effort to
place wrapped gifts in this
container. The club believes
by so doing one may find the
true meaning of Christmas.
If you are unable to come by
the collection box at Colonial
Store, please call 366-5171
and the gift can be picked up
by a club member.

their ingenuity to place the
lights and make the tree one
of the most beautiful we
have ever had.
In conjunction with the

to the beginning of the pa

We hope each and every
one enjoys the tree and may
each of you have a happy

ORBIT CONTEST’
(Continued from Page 1)
The various Sunday School
departments are competing
with each other to achieve
the greatest number of
orbits around the earth. The
number of miles each de
partment’s space capsule
travels is determined by the
number of members present,
the number of visitors, and
the number of classes 100
per cent in attendance. As
of the end of November, the
Beg in n ers Department is
ahead with 19 orbits, the
Adult/Nursery team second
with 16.
Phillips Drive Baptist
Church has recently begun
its sixth year of serving the
Forest Park area. Its Sunday
School presently maintains
an average attendance of
500, with four busses oper

major factor in the recent
city elections, with those
candidates most opposed to
it being elected, with the
exception of Mrs. Suzanne
Jensen who faces a runoff
Dec. 16 against J. P. Mayes,
a member of the Planning
and Zoning Board.
In other actions the Coun
cil passed a rezoning petition
for the corner of Highway
54 and Morrow Road from
residential to commercial,
for the purpose of building
a new automated grocery
store. The new chain, called
The Bread Basket, Inc., and
operated by the National
Cash Register and Sinclair
Refining Companies, boasts
a new concept in grocery
store design. It will allow
customers to drive in, push
buttons to buy any of fifty
most-used items, charge
their purchases on a Sinclair
credit card, get their gas
tanks filled, and all without
having to leave their autos.
Proposed construction of this
will begin sometime early in
1968. It will be the second of
its kind in Atlanta.
Also granted was a peti
tion to operate a nursery
school-kindergarten in the
old Baptist pastorate on
Reynolds Road, which will be
most convenient for Mor
row’s working mothers.
