SUNDAYS @ SERMON
LIVE TODAY
Make a resolution for the
New Year. Make it sim‘?le. Re
solve that you will LIVE TO
DAY.
How do you live today? You
start each new mornir:g with
recognition of the fact that the
important things are the NOW
things. What haw;ened yester
day is history. at hglppens
tomorrow is not certain. Today
is the thing that counts.
Today is the time to dosome
thing about the mistakes you
made yesterday. Today is the
time to set plans for the kind of
tomorrow you would like to see.
Now, today, is the time to do
the things about you that need
doing.
Live today to the fullest. Do
not pass up the opportunity to
help a friend, or a stranger. Do
not refuse a piece of work if it
is something worth doing. Life
is so unpredictable that you
may never have another chance.
The task will pass to someone
else and they will receive what
ever rewards it offers.
Try to live today in a fashion
that leaves nothing undone when
the day is over, unless, Kerhaps,
it is part of an unfinished task
that will be the foundation on
which you will begin to live
today when a new day is born.

Beautification
Award Announced
By Georgia EMC
Georgia’s stepped-up ef
forts at beautifying the
countryside got another
boost last week when the
Georgia Electric Member
ship Corporation announced
it will award SSOO to the
county making the most
progress in 1968 in “Beauti
fication through Conserva
tion.”
The new program, which is
being sponsored in coopera
tion with the Georgia Asso
ciation of Soil and Water
Conservation Districts, was
announced by Georgia EMC:
Manager Walter Harrison,
Millen, at the annual con
vention of conservation dis
trict supervisors in Macon.
Mr. Harrison pointed out
that natural beauty is fun
damentally determined by
how the land is used. A curv
ing patchwork of strip
cropped and contoured
fields, grassed waterways,
lush green pastures, the soft
green of Georgia pine trees
and glistening farm ponds
are the things that will
really make Georgia’s rural
landscape beautiful, he said.
Commenting on the pro
gram, James Loughridge of
Chatsworth, president of the
Georgia Association of Soil
and Water Conservation Dis
tricts, said less than three
percent of the land in Geor
gia is devoted to urban uses.
Because of this, he stated,
efforts to preserve and im
prove the state’s natural
beauty must rely heavily on
what is done in rural areas.
“The sponsoring organiza
tions hope this joint pro
gram will encourage coun
ties to make greater efforts
toward the best use of land
and water resources,” Mr.
Loughridge continued. “In
so doing, the general appear
ance of the countryside will
be transformed into vistas of
pleasing patterns and colors
that are green and fertile
and useful—as well as beau
tiful.”
All counties are eligible to
participate in ‘“Beautifica
tion through Conservation.”
Information about the pro
gram may be obtained from
the conservation district su
pervisor in each county. This
should be done not Ilater
than March 1, 1968. The
contest ends September 30,
1968, and all improvements
or accomplishments to that
date will be considered by
the judges.
There is no torture that a
woman would not endure to
enhance her beauty.—
Montaigne.

a"l REMEMBER @
BY THE OLD TIMER
From Eloise Doil, Nebo,
Mlinois: I'm not exactly a has
been, but I don’t havetheget-up
and go I had when I woried as
a clerk in what was then called
the general store. And the name
applied was certainly correct,
for it included meats, groceries,
dry goods, shoes and boots, and
kerosene and what-have-you.
The kerosene was pumped by
hand from a barrel and most
customers used kerosene lamps.
Coffee was ground on a large
grinder operated by hand. \fie
also transferred eggs brought
in from the country, to other
cases and used their containers
for the groceries which they pur
chased. The customers would
read off their list of articles and
you gathered them together, re
gardless of the amount of
walking involved. i
Times have changed. Now,
when you enter the large self
service stores, you take the
shopping cart and “"you” do all
the walking. But the display of
various foods are always so at
tractively arranged that you
always finish by buying more
than was anticipated, which
makes the store owners happy.
So, just pay your bill ams try
to be happy too.
