The Value of a Look l
Behind the Scenes
By CHARLES GOE
Pastor, Ash Street Baptist
Church
One cannot imagine the
value that comes from an ex
perience unless you look be
hind the scenes. This was
true last week
when we had
the opportu
nity of flying
in a National
Guard Con
stellation to
Coloradbd
Springs for
the Military
Chaplain’s
Association.
This was the forty-third na
tional convention. It com
bined a convention and a
workshop period with a chal
lenging convention theme of
“Order.”
This brought a new insight
into this experience as we
faced one program after an
other highlighting the im
portance of order in our so
ciety. The keynote speaker,
Dr. Thomas Stephens Haggai,
Spoke at the opening session
on Monday evening. His mes
sage was a challenge to us
in our world. He recognized
the fact that military chap
lains themselves and they
that have been former chap
lains have a peculiar and
particular responsibility in
the world of which we are a
part and it is our opportu
nity to take men and lead
them to the living God. This
is order for their lives. All
of the chiefs of chaplains of
the three branches of service
were there. Each of them
brcught outstanding mes
sages and recognized the fact
that men have the respon
sibility in today's world of
carrying on a tremendous
program of witnessing and
service both here in the
United States and around
the world.
Chaplain James W. Kelly.

Corps, U.S.N., with the text.

lasting Arms” challenged us
to realize that our depend

“Arms Other Than Military”
was the subject of his ad

Another outstanding speak
er was Mr. Gilliam. Mr. Gil

told us some of the experi
ences that were his, where °
that 24,000 women had
brought babies to him to give |
away, and 30,000 children !
had stood before him as ju
venile delinquents. He said |
that surely this is an age }
when we must have order as |
’never before, and we must |
| recognize the fact that our
| society demands of us the '
' responsibilities of serving it |
| and leading it. i
| The closing address was by |
] the Chief of Chaplains of the |
Army, Francis L. Sampson, |
entitled “Anatomy of Our |
Military Apostolate,” His ad- |

were to minister as ministers |
and our particular responsi
bility was to lift up the risen
| Christ and to identify him !
| with men around the world. |
| All of these messages were !
| outstanding and we felt that
| it was of tremendous impact
| upon our world.
| Along with all of these
messages was the fellowship
that we found. We saw many

{ many new friends. One new
i friend was a close friend of

At its last week's meeting
the Kiwanis Club of Moun
tain View observed its Fifth
Anniversary combined with
Ladies’ Night. Six members
of the South College Park
club attended, including
President Roy Hancock and
the speaker for the occa
sion, Dr. Clifford England.
Two of the visiting club’s
past presidents assisted in
the proceedings, “E. W."” Oli
ver introducing the speaker
and Rep. Lamar Northcutt
aptly recognizing four of the
Mountain View members for
five years' perfect attend
ance. Other members of the
same visiting group were
band, is a young Army Lieu
tenant, who is in the Army
Infantry stationed in Fort
Carson, Colorado.
A visit to the Air Force
Academy increased our joy
and interest.
All of this goes to say how
wonderful it is to know the
blessings that God has
brought to our America, and
how great is the challenge
that is ours as we think in
terms of the world of which
we are a part. Edwin Mark
ham once said,
“Why build these citles
glorious
If man unbuilded goes?
In vain we build the world
unless
The builder also grows.”
