WSB Radio will celebrate Circus Day as a “special day” feature Friday, April 17. Au brey Morris, WSB Radio News Director, will broadcast live re ports from the hospital throughout the day beginning with the before-dawn arrival of the circus and covering actual performances. Hoxie Brothers Circus will perform both April 17 and 18 for the patients of the state mental hospital as a result of a fund raising drive launched by WSB Radio February 6 in re sponse to an appeal from Cen tral State officials. The $2,200 necessary to bring the circus to Milledgeville was raised within 72 hours of the first on-air appeal. The final total, over $7,000 donated by Georgians in all walks of life, is enough, hospital officials say, to bring the circus back for 3 more years. The fund-raising project was undertaken by WSB Radio at the request of Dr. James B. Craig, Superintendent of Cen tral State, who wrote WSB Radio General Manager Elmo Ellis how much last year’s circus performances had meant to the patients and asked for the station’s help in making possible a return engagement. The Atlanta station was commended for its efforts by both houses of the Georgia General Assembly and by the State Board of Health, which praised WSB Radio for its . . strong sense of civic re sponsibility and for .. . (the station’s) response to this and other expressions of human needs.” 7
