The first portion of his article ap peared in last week’s Trench and Camp, and we urge every soldier at Camp Hancock or elsewhere, to read carefully and memorize the salient facts and reasonings pre sented by Dr. Hess.—Editor. (Continued from last week.) The Germans must be made to real ize that Paul’s great teaching in Ro man 4:7, “None of us liveth unto him self,” applies to nations as well as to individuals. Instead of Deutschland Über Alles,” they should say, Germany, the servant and minister of all, or Germany, the helper of all. *1 come not to be ministered unto, but to minister,” as Jesus said, is an eternal truth. It is the truth of a really great career, be it that of the individual or the' state. And this is democracy’s ideal, and this will be the ideal of all the states in the future. A state that exists only for itself must die. This is the eternal law of God, and this the wrongly educated Germans have up to this time refused to learn. But they will have to do so. If the German government and peo ple are one, as they claim, then both must be disciplined, and that is one reason for our ‘butting in.” The north butted in on the south in 1861, and preserved the Union and abolished the slavery, and would not let the south do as it pleased. Thus they forced the northern social system on the south. They wiped out an evil that seemed hopelessly entrenched in the south. It wos done for the good of the whole I country. So America now has had to ‘‘butt in” j on Germany, and insist on a change in its government. For the sake of the peace of the whole world, it has had to do this- The government as it now is constituted, is a positive menace to the rest of the world. It must go soon er or later, no matter how hard or how big a joo it is. There can be no” permanent peace ir the world until the brutal pagan, power worshipping disturbers of the peace of the world are exterminated or stripped of their power. The world has become too small for both autocracy and dem ocracy. One or the other must go down. The German leaders hate dem- ' ocracy, but democracy has come to stay. It has been a long time coming and it is not yet fully here, even in America, but it has come to stay. The Kaiser crowd, the Pan-Germans or Junkers, are not very different from old King-Canute, who sat by the sea side and said to the tide of the Atlantic, “Thus far and no further.” The rising tide swept right over him. So with Kaiserism and Democracy, it is only a Neurasthenic one, half crazing, un balanced religious maniacs, such as the kaiser, who would say to democracy. “Thus far and no further.” The rising democratic tide will sweep right over the kaiserites, the junkerites, and the militarists. The world is sick of war and wants a perpetual peace. This will come, but the kaisers must first go. Go to St. Helena, to a school of democracy in Si beria, to hell, or somewhere. The kaiser is very religious, but so has been many another man who has been a curse to the world, as the Pro- | testant Reformation movement has proven. Even the devils can quote sa cred scripture, as the Good Book shows. Do you notice that the kaiser never once mentions Jesus, the great, strong son of God, the Prince of Peace, the great teacher of love and good will? The kaiser is very fond of blasprem ously saying, “Gott mit uns” (God with us). Os course, the Teuton God is the devil: for only the devil could encour age such brutality, such barbarism such hell as the Germans are guilty of. "Billy" Sunday is right when he says, “if you could turn hell upside down, you would find a label ‘made in Ger many’ on it.” These Hohenzollern pirates and vip ers must be crushed then, before we can get a permanent peace on the earth before Jesus Christ can have His chance , before human liberty, and democracy can be safe, before the king dom of God and righteousness can come on the earth. Prussian militarism is the great ob stacle to all this, and so we say, “To hell -with Prussian militarism.” The war cannot end until every “Divine Righter” is removed from power. The invisible God alone is King of men and Jesus Christ is man’s . only rightful Lord; and they have and need no vice gerents on earth. They and now present but so are the agents of the devil. Outside God and Jesus Christ, let the people rule and choose and remove their own rulers, just as they do *in the great American repub lic, and just as they will do some day in Germany, when she is freed of her medieval rulers. For any government to talk of a di vine right to rule the world is sheer nonsense in this twentieth century. 1776 exploded that theory, but evident ly the work of 1776 is not yet complete. We in America thought it was. but we find ourselves mistaken. TRENCH AND CAMP It is for the Americans in 1917 to complete the work so ably done by the men of 1776. George Washington and his patriots fought to free the thirteen colonies from the tyranny and despot ism of the crazy German king on the British throne. Abraham Lincoln and the men of 1861 fought to preserve the Union that Washington and his gener ation gave us, and to set the black man free, but President Wilson has the big gest task of all .He and the Ameri cans of today are fighting to set the whole world free from Prussian domi nation and tyranny and despotism. For any government to talk of world dom ination today as the German govern ment is doing, is, I repeat, folly and nonsense. It is too late in the world’s history for that kind of talk. It is in cative of a disordered brain. The Prussian war party has gone crazy and these crazy men have gained an awful power which must be somehow taken from them. They are enemies of the whole world, and they must be crushed with the spirit of 1776. No half-way measures will do. Bernhardi, the German militarist has long been saying that it is either German “world power or downfall.” Your Uncle Saumel replies to him then downfall; for German world pow er is impossible. We have a big con tract on our hands, but it must be fulfilled, if we prize our liberties. We need men. “God give us men. The time demand) Strong men. great hearts, true faith, and willing hands. For while the rabble with their thumb i worn creeds Their large profession and little deeds I Mingle in selfish strife; lo! freedom i weeps, i Wrong rules the land, and waiting. Justice sleeps.” ■ i We need strong men; men of great j moral courage, as well as men of phys- | ical strength. We need men of clear i vision. We need men who will join > the valorous French at Verdun and cry: “They shall not pass.’ ’ They shall not win. Democracy must live. Strong men of character are needed. Men who appreciate liberty enough tn work and sacrifice and fight and die, if necessary, for it. We need clean, pure strong men. We need men of poise and confidence, such men as are pro duced by our invaluable college ath letes. We need men to save society and civ ilization and true Christianity. We need men who will value the lib erty that we have inherited and will fight to maintain it and will sacrifice to preserve the free state, the free church and the free school. It’s an heroic age. There never was a more heroic one. Thank God, we are living in it; thank God for the oppor tunity to live a man’s part. The slackers are unpopular today. They will go down into history just as the Tories of 1776, who bucked Washington and his men. Let us do our part, not our ‘“bit,” but as much as we possibly can. Let us vow that the government of th people, for the people, and by the people, shall not perish out of the land.” Let us go further, and vow that such a government shall be extended every where for the sake of the higher wel fare of the world. Let us vow that it shall be extended even into Germany. Let us fall to, ye men and women of America, and God speed the great work we have on our hands, the work of making the world safe for democracy. WM. MILTON HESS. WIVES IN PENNSYLVANIA.
