1/ec. 19,1917. Psychology And The War By William Milton Hess, of New York, Formerly Instructor in Philosophy and Recorder of Yale College This war is to be won or lost through psychology, through ideas, through right or wrong thinking. The war is now’ a conflict of ideas or principles. It is a battle between the democratic principle of America and the autocratic principle of Germany. These two nations stand for the extreme in democracy and autocracy today. The Germans would never have had started the war, were it not for a wrong psychology. They have been misedu cated for a whole generation. In the name of efficiency,—and “efficiency” today is mainly a matter of applied psychology— the German people were led to believe that if they allowed their state suprerfie control, Germany would abound in pros perity. Kaiserism has so manipulated the na tive German industriousness, that the people were fully persuaded that the prosperity (material) of their Fatherland was due chiefly to Kaiserism. The people of Germany ever since Bis marck's day of power, have been taught to despise democracy as most inefficient and slip-shod. The ultra-Kaiserites look upon America ■with scorn and contempt, and they had no hesitation in spreading their notions. A great body of Germans therefore think we are a very inferior people compared with themselves. I doubt whether the W’orld has ever before seen the equal of the German national conceit. German Conceit Unequaled. The German leaders laugh at our “crude” ways; they scorn us as simply “money chasers," when, in reality, very few’ people have chased the dollar more than these very same Germans, whether they are living in Berlin or New’ York City. Os course the German nobility, the Junker class, disdain to work for a living just as much as the English or any other nobility. They all have the wrong idea that they are appointed of God to make up the ruling class, or are, least, of superior blood to the common run of humanity. Tn America we have grown to be a people 100,000,000 strong, all of whom, with very few exceptions, believe in democracy. Our thinking democratic ideas has taken us along the very opposite path to that travelled by the German nobility. We ard they today are at opposite poles. Had not the German nobility .through the dissemination of false ideas, gained such awful power, the world w'ould have noth ing to fear from the ideas possessed bv the German ruling classes. But as it is, the very existence of de mocracy is threatened. It is an unques tionable fact that we are now at a time of crisis in the world’s history. It is either race progress or retrogression; progress, if American ideas of democracy win, and retrogression, if the German autocratic idea should win. But conquer w»e must, w’hen our cause it is just, And this be our motto: “Tn God is our trust!” And the Star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave Over the land of the free, and the home of the brave.” The German people have been induced to let the state do their thinking for them through a material bribe. They were led to think that their state will bring grea. riches for every German just as soon as the German military party wnns a place in the sun for Germany. It is one of the temptations of Christ that we today see enacted in a nation's life. Cf. Matt. 4:8-9: "The devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them: and saith unto him, all these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.” This is precisely the temptation to which the Germans have yielded. They have refused to follow Jesus, who said: (Matt. 4:10): “Get thee hence. Satan: for it is written. Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.” Kaiser Forgets Christ. The one noticeable thing about the Kaiser’s blasphemy in addressing God is that he never mentions Jesus. The Ger man autocracy opposes Jesus’ teaching of stooping to conquer. They ridicule the idea of turning the other cheek or of heaping “coals of fire” on your enemv's head. "Get thy sword” is their cry, and rule by might; although the true God told humanity centuries before Jesus that it was “not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord of Hosts.” (Zech. 4:5.) Even though the history of the world proves that force never yet created any thing permanent in the governments of men, yet these deluded Germans, obses sed with false ideas, dream that they can . get away with what the great Napoleon or Caesar or Alexander failed in, and what in every case must end in failure. Thus the German people were led into the worst war the world has seen bv their wrong-thinking military and gov ernment leaders. They were led to be lieve that Germany’s existence was at stake, that unprepared England and un developed Russia were about to devour Germany, and so every loyal German must fight for his existence against the great Slav peril! Wrong thinking led the Germans into the terrible calamity that has already cost them 6.000,000 men, and brought them to the verge of national bankruptcy. When will the great awakening occur? When will true ideas take the place of the false ideas by which they are still held in captivity? Italian Drive a Trick. This present Italian drive of the Ger mans is only another trick to fool the German people at home. It is being done for domestic political reasons. The sweep into Italy, like the one into Roumania, sounds well on paper. It hides the pounding and the defeats the Germans are getting on the West front. The theatrical Italian drive is planned to af fect the German crowd during the coming winter and to prepare them to sacrifice still further to keep up this horrib' butchery that they call war. Will C German people fnr’b.r yield to wro~r psychology? 69,005,000 German people, "mostly fools,” as Carlyle would say, are the dupes of less than 1.000 000 German leaders, men who lead in ail their lire as professors, ministers, bankers, big business men, military and naval men, TRENCH AND CAMP &c. These leaders are such liars and ' wily deceivers and tricksters, that they | have brought a stigma on the German ■ name that will take generations to live I down. They have caused the rest of the ■ world to look on Germany as a nation ; without honor, as one that cannot be trusted. They have engineered one lie after another to mislead the German peo- ! pie. They have said the Germafl-'-ajmy | was invincible, and that the war would | be over in a few months. The British and | the French have already shown by hold- ! ing out in their state of unpreparedness | for over three years how invincible the i German army is. Was not the Kaiser ’ to have eaten his Thanksgiving dinner in j Paris as far back as November, 1914? i The German leaders have been guilty ; of one deception after another. A sub- I sidized and government-controlled press ■ cannot tell the truth. The Germans recently in a raid in i which they outnumbered the Americans : in the trenches 10 to 1, captured a hand- j ful of Americans. It was all done to | fool the German people. They sent home I to Germany the report that the captured I Americans did not know why they were ; fighting Germany! Any lie to keep up! the fast-waning courage of the German , people! Up to very recently the German j people were told that no American troops I could cross the Atlantic, as the subma rines permitted no ship to live, and that there were no Americans in France. German Leaders Fool People. The German leaders have told their people that Americans could not and would not fight, and so, on and on. Never ■ in the world's history has a people been I lied to as the Germans have been. Were : it not for their entirely wrong thinking, ; the war would be over in no time. President Wilson’s aeroplane informa- 1 tion bureau scheme is a wise one. Aero- I planes dropping literature containing the; truth in Germany will do as much or ; more good than bombs. Right thinking, 1 the truth, is all they need. > War Will be Won by Psychology. The war will be won by psychology, by I spirit and truth. The American spirit I of truth and justice and unflinching cour age, the American athletic spirit backed by democratic ideas and by truth, and a sense of justice and a square deal will vanquish these power-worshipping, pagan, lying. Germans. America, as al ways, is on the side of humanity, on the side of human rights, on the side of God and Righteousness. The Kaiserites seek to get God on their side; but the true God, the Father, of whom Jesus Christ taught, will never be won over to the side of ; deceit, and hypocrisy, and lying, and : rape, and wholesale murder of innocent I women and children. The Almighty has no intention of abdi- I eating in favor of a neurasthenic Kaiser. ! Falsehood may rule the day, but to truth belongs Eternity. December 4th, 1917. POSITIVE IDENTIFICATION. Sammy wandered away from one of ! the American training camps “some where in England” and stumbled into a nearby British camp, after dark. “Halt, who goes there?” challenged 1 the Tommy. “Who t’heli wants to know?” the wanderer countered. “Pass, American,” said the sentry.
