Personal*
Our genial old friend of many years, >
Major Watkins, of Columbus, repre
senting the old, excellent and reliable i
house of Bedell A Cos., gave us a call on
Thursday. Mnj. Watkins has been travel
ing for the house for nine or ton years. We
have met him in various sections of the
country, and have been cognizant, of many
Of his business transactions, and we have
never known a merchant to complain.
Never has the charge been ma le that the
bouse didn’t send the goods corresponding
With the agenti samples. The fair dealing ;
Of Major Watkins, and tire house he reji
resnts, is getting to he well known here,
and he always sells when he comes.
The Bert
that heats the beet that. beat, the Thomas-
Ville beet or any other beet, was given to us |
last Saturday. We had no rule with
which to measure it, nor scales on which
to weigh it., but we do say, that it was the
redest beet, and the beat-nest beet for
length and thickness, we ever saw. We
are determined to sustain onr reputation
for veracity, therefore, We will not ven
ture to guess at either size or weight; but
we will state that with the assistance of
two ladies and one gentleman, we got it
into O'.: y buggy. v> e Wete. .very anxious
to publish the name- of the producer ei
this huge esculent, hut Mis. Reding de
clared if we told that she raised it, that
she would never give us another beet no
matter how large her beets grew, but
would make her husband give us a beating
and for fear of missing the beet, nud get
’ ting the beating, wo won’t tell. You
needn’t ask us, we won t do it.

Tito Church Euchred tile Show.
It was announced by handbills,through
out our town on Wednesday last, that
therewould be an exhibition given, free
of charge, at Kayton’s Hall that evening,
embracing songs, plays, slight of hand,
Ventriloquism, spiritualism, etc., etc., and
that on tbe following night a simnlar ex
hibition would be given for which a charge
of fifty cents for each person would be
made, anil that out of the proceeds a lib
eral donation would be made to any chari
table purpose, or public enterprise that
the audience might suggest. So on the
liight of the free show, the Baptists were
there, and the Methodist were there, the
Presbyterians were there, and the Demo
crats were there, and the Devils (Radicals)
were there; hut on the night when admis
sion was fifty cents the church members
with four honorable and liberal exceptions
were absent, and so it was with the devils,
they were all absent for they hale' liberal
ity. There was a few present, hut not
enough to justify the actors in performing.
To the performance of Mr. Addison
no exceptions eonld he taken, it was very
amusing, but perfectly Chastand innocent.
And oh I how the dear church people did
<*njoy it, but when it cojneto display their
liberality, and let the showman feel happy
in his turn, churclr members was scarce,
and devils not One.
While we do not know what we may do in
the future there is ttro thing that we have
fully determined never to do, one is never,
to steal the butter off of a blind negroes
bread, the other is never to steal a show
man’s fun, for that is bis bread.
A Cute Trick.
Griffin, the Post Master at this place,
being a simple minded, unsuspecting, con
fiding sort of being, has been induced by
bis shrewd associate and daily companion
to work for and Obtain the nomination as
the Radical candidate for the Senate. If
elected it leaves the office of Post Master
vacant and there is no other white Radical
that approximates simon purity, but his
present companion, E. C. Wade, he will
necessarily step in. Griffin will be Sena
tor with all the honors with about two
hundred and forty dollars a year, and
Wade will boss the postal department on
aniDcomeof from Si,ooo to 5i,200 per
annum. Sam, assisted by Wade, in the
sale of postage stamps in Savannah and
elsewhere, has made the post office here
no insignificant thing. But whether it is
right for Sam to buy all of his provisions
in Savannah with postage stamps and in
crease his salery here for stamps sold there
is a Radical act, the correctness of which
the Radical Administration must deter
mine,
Look at thi*
and then look at that, wo mean by that, the
advertisement of Mr. ,1. A. Irvine A Son,
which appears iu another column of this
issue. It is very often the case with men
who advertise in newspapers to demand
when they hand in tlieir advertisements j
what is called an editorial puff. We state
candidly now that it has been our purpose
and intention ull the time and iu every in
stance, in refering Jjto the business of our
patrons to do them and their business jus
tice and no more, so as not to deceive and |
mislead our subscribers, who are likewise
our patrons, and if we have inflated any
one’s sales, or given to them or their busi
ness a character unmerited, it was on error
of judgement and not of intention.. In
calling your attention to the advertise- i
moiit of Irvine A- Son, remember that it i
does not appear in onr columns either ns a
[ license or a bribe to an exngernted repre-
I sentation of the firm or their business.
: But it is our duty, editorially, tocallatten
; tion to the advertisement of any one who
I patronizes us so liberally, anil strictly
| guided by truth and honor advocate liis
| claims to public patronage. Mr. Irvine s
claim to public patronage doesn’t consist
in the fact that he was bred and born in
your county and lias been your friend for
many years, but liis claims to public pat
; ronngo is of a business character, and de
pends upon principle and his manner of
doing business. If he proposes to sell you
j goods ten per cent higher upon the cash
jor credit system than other men offer to
sell for cash or on credit, upon principle,
| he would not be entitled to your patronage
j riee-yersa. If in doing strictly a cash Ims
| incss ho offers you as good goods ns cheap
| as any other man doing a cash business, liis
| claim to your patronage is equal to the oth-
I er. If he sells a little or a great deal less, the
j principles that govern nil men in their
i business transactions would satisfy your
| mind at once that he had the highest claim
to your patronage. Upon these princi
ples Irvine & Son advertises, and upon
these principles we present them to the
public. They keep a large and elegant
: assortment of dry goods, hats, caps, boots,
! shoes and ready made clothing, and a gon-
I oral assortment of family groceries, con
sisting of all the weighty as well as fancy
articles, and of flour they propose to make
! a specialty, they have now and will con
; staidly keep on hand n large supply of a
| most excellent article, which they purchase
! direct from the mill, avoiding all com
i missions which will enable them to sell
I cheaper than when the article is obtained
j either from whole sale or through com
] mission merchants. They propose to sell
i exclusively for cash or produce and in do
ling so they will sell at very short, profits.
We would advise our friends to buy as lit
| tie as possible and buy exclusively for
cash, and buy attliffeash stores where
their goods are marked to sell .for cash.
Reader, when you come to town just step
into the house of Irvine A Son and exam
ine their goods and price them, anil if they
I don’t correspond with their advertisement
; in this paper, don’t buy; wo huveeonfi
! deuce iu the cash system and believe that
! this firm can and will satisfy you.
Special Attention
is called to the advertisement of tho Quit- ;
man Factory in this issue. This grand ,
public enterprise in our little county, un
der the supervision of Dr. Henry Briggs,
should boa source of pride to every citi
zen of Southern Georgia, ns it is and will
prove to he a source of profit and benefit
to the whole country. All of Southern
Georgia should feci specially interested,
and readily and cheerfully give to this es
tablishment their encouragement and pat
ronage. Don’t hositate because it isn’t lo
cated in your county, it is in your section.
There is constantly on hand such articles
as they manufacture and merchants in
| (leorgia and Florida can ho supplied at all
j times, and we think.that it will be, to their
: interest as well as to the interest of our
j section, to spend their money at home and
I build up home interests.
I- iiif Day.
Yesterday was fast day with the colored
people in Quitman of the Methodist per
| suasion, and the minister enjoined upon
j the members n strict observance of this
I ancient custom, telling them while it was
! a duty and fast they must on this occasion,
! he told them that lie could not observe it
j as sister had gone to gr''at trouble
! to prepare a dinner and had invited him
to dine, and brother Gadsden did cat and
was filled.
A New Kllk.
We are credibly informed that a military
company has been organized X Gatildeus
Church in this county under the direction
of the firm of Wade & Griffin. The said
firm assuring the negroes that join, that af
ter a certain time they will receive sixteen
dollars per month. But, that in order to
become members they must pay to the
said firm of Wade if: Griffin, each 25 cents
and 25 cents monthly so long as the remain
members. Quere: Are they recruiting for
the United States army ? Certainly not for
the State.

; vertisement of Mr. H. L. Schriner, of

And must we say farewell to thoo
Tho darling pet of all,

Oh! that we had thee back again,
To earth a little while,
To hear tliy darling little tongue,
And aoo thy gentle smiles.
Thy father’s pallid face
Has marks of heartfelt woe;
Oh ! God create in him
A heart that’s new and pure.
Thy mother dear and sister lone,

But God will gently lead them homo,
To that bright and better land.
Dear little Lkok, we are marching on

GRANT HAS KILLED “CIVIL
RIGHTS."
The Tribune's Washington correspon
dent, under ditto of Friday, telegraphs
that ‘‘it is thought a clear insight lias been
obtained into the reasons for the apathy
which pervades tho Republican party in
tho House regarding tho Civil Rights Rill.
The President, it seems, is against the
hill, mid from report makes no conceal
ment of his opposition even to the race to
ho benefitted by I Ito law. Ho was recently
approached by a Republican Congressman
(a colored mail), who desired to obtain tho
President’s ideas and opinions ns to its
adoption. Much to the astonishment of
tho member and of all the members, and of
all tho colored men who have heard of it,
the President expressed himself as deci
dedly opposed to tho bill. Tho colored
nieii say the President has broken every
promise made to them during the cam
paign two years ago, and that the defeat
of the Civil Rights Bill is due to his in
finence. (Jen. Butler is reported to have
said that ho would consent to the striking
