The following preamble and resolutions
were unanimously adopted Shiloh Lodge,
t No. 60, F. A A. M., July Bth, A. L. 5874,
| As D. 1874.
Whereas, it has pleased Almighty God
to remove from his earthly labors our es
teemed Brother, Wm. B. Holwezl, and
whereas, it is eminently fitting and proper
that we should pay a tribute to tho high
worth and excellence of our departed
Brother, aud whereas, while wo bow with
humble submission to him who is Father
of us all, anil who, though his ways are
inscrutable and past finding out, yet who
| doeth all things well, we cannot refrain
i from giving expression to and recording
\ our extreme sorrow and regret at the
! severe lors that lias befallen us in the re
moval from our earthly Lodge of our bc
■ loved Brother, and offering sympathy and
j condolence for those who have been so
| sadly bereft, by this untimely event; there
| fore be it
Resolved, That in the death of Brother
Hoewkee this Lodge has lost an esteemed
I and worthy member, his family a kind
j husband and devoted father and the coun-
I try a useful and honorable citizen.
Resulted, That a blank page in onr rec
■ ord book be dedicated to his memory, and
I the Lodge be draped in mourning for
[ thirty days, and that we wear the usual
badge, of mourning f or thirty days.
Resolved, That we extend to the bereaved
family our sincere and heartfelt sympathies
in this their hour of affliction.
Resolved, That a copy of this preamble
and these resolutions be furnished the
family of the deceased Brother, and the
Quitman Reporter and G-aezaHer’s Inde
pendent be requested to publish the same.

The First Baer. — Galveston, July 25.
The first bale of the new crop was received
to-day from Mrs. M. Ilausmann, Mayes
ville, Dewitt county; weight 442; class low
middling. It sold at 27 cents. This is
the third successive year tbat Mrs. Haus
manfi has sent the first bale to Galveston.
The example of Mr. James Licit is be
ginning tc bear fruit. It is said that Mr.

have long been the pride of that city.
GENERAL GORDON.
If there were needed proof of how nt-1
torly mischievous is the modem system of
newspaper interviewing, wo had it in the
ease of Geueral Gordon, whose letter we j
printed on Tuesday, with some running !
comments. He was bruited all over the
land as having, under some sort of Execu
tive blandishment, committed himself, and
of course those whom ho represents, to the ■
support of Grant for a third term, and J
incidentally to the abandonment ot the ’
Democratic faith and party. It was put, |
too, on the poorest of all grounds- faith in i
tardy professions of sympathy with the j
South and personal cajolery of southern
leaders. Nobody who knew Gen. Gordon
believed one word of this. But there were
a great many who did not know him, and
a still larger class of careless inconsiderate
folk who accept as true whatever they find
plausibly and circumstantially stated in \
the newspapers. Ilouoe—in spite of pro- '
testation from those who knew better all I
over the laud—with thoughtless, easy j
credence, went the belief and the fear that J
Democracy was betrayed in the strong-1
hold, for such the white Smith always was
and will be, nnd that for one untrust-!
worthy promise as to tho future, our j
friends iu the disfranchised States were
w illing to forget the past. It gave nil air of 1
plausibility to tho fictions which were put
m circulation as to Virginia, and which we
honestly believe were as groundless as
those about Georgia are now proved to he.
As to the latter—indeed, ms to the whole
South—General Gordon puts the slander j
at rest, at once and forever, Baltimore j
Gazette.
Cotton in Oboboia.— Auyusta, Ga.,
July 22.—The Cotton Exchange this even
ing sent a report to the New Orleans Cot

answers from twenty-five counties, from [
which it appears that the weather lias j
generally been reported more favorable to
the crop than during the same period last
year. No lands planted have been nbuu- j
doned, but most of the early planting hns
been replanted; therefore nearly the
whole is of the late planting. Tho stand
is equal to that of last year, but not well
formed and boiled. The lobor is efficient j
the condition good, and tho plants grow-!
ing rapidly. . Woods are not ns largo, and
there is less fruit than last year at this j
time. Sixty to seventy per cent, less of [
fertilizers has been used than last year. S
