Dear Sir: While attending the Com

A Monkey in a Tight Place.
Sam AYilcoxen, of tiie Euglo Brewery,
has a small menagerie of monkeys,
; badgers, foxes, coyotes, and the like. He
| aho has a large Newfoundland dog, on
whose hack fie sometime place* due of liis
| pet monkeys when lie is going for a walk
about the town, the monkey fastened to
the collar of tlio dog by a string. Asa
general ’tiling, the monkey enjoys his ride;
hut we saw him a day or two since
when lie would have traded himself oil for
| some less privileged specimen of his
species. His canine steel, being allowed
to roam at will, saw' another dog he
thought he could whip, and forthwith
I went for him like a hairy hurricane. In
; a moment both dogs were on their hind
legs, aud going for each other like two
; sausage machines. This made time Very
lively for the monkey, as the stranger dog
: evidently considered him us part aud
j parcel of his antagonist,
i. Such w ails of despair as that monkey
i uttered, aud such hideous faces as lie
made we never heard or saw before. He <
would climb down the side of the dog he
bestrode, opposite to where the war was
going on, and thence pee;) over occasion
ally, his jaws quivering, visage distorted,
and his eyes starting from their sockets in
terror. As tile dogs were constantly chang
ing sides, it made things awfully lively
with the monkey. When he jumped to
tiie ground the string held him, and lie 1
found himself trampled under the feet of
both friend and foe, and he was glad to
get again opon the back of his steed and
face the battle. The poor monkey was in
a worse fix than the boy who stood on tiie
burning deck, and had not tiie dogs been
separated lie must soon have been render
ed a fit subject for tiie Stockton Insane
Asylum. As it was lie did not get over
examining the end of his tail for wounds
i for hours after the bat tie— perhaps lie had
fears of hydropobia Virginia. Enter
prise.

A Columbia clergyman, who, while
j preaching a sermon on .Sunday evening,
, perceived a man and woman under the
gallery in the act of kissing each other be
hind a hymn book, did not lose his temper.
No! be remained calm. He beamed
mildly at the offrmh-fs Aver his spectacles,
and when the young man kissed her the
fifteenth time, he merely broke his sermon
j short off in the middle of “thirdly,” and
| offered a fervent prayer in behalf of “the
j young.man in pink necktie and the maiden
j in the blue bonnet and gray shawl, who
l were profaning the sanctuary by kissing
one another in pew 78." And the congre
tion said “Amen.” Then the woman

A Family of Murderers.
An interesting little establishment has
just been broken up at Trebizond, under
rireunistnuces which have created a sensa
tion in that place. For some time past
Trebizond has been kept in a state of
uneasiness ow ing to the proceedings of
this household, which consisted of n
father, six sons and oqe daughter. The
family weakness whs murder. In a abort
time the eight persons composing the
family managed to get through, according
to the Trebizond correspondent of the
Levaut Jl-rubl, no fewer limn 235 mur
der*. Gilt of this number the gelltlcuien
of the family were each responsible for 30
murders, while the young lady only com
mitted 25, though, but for the premature
interference of the authorities, it is con
sidered probable that she would have
completed an equal number The pre
decessor of the Govonor caused her to be
arrested, together with her amiable parent
and four of her brothers. It is not stated
what became of the lemniuiug brothers,
but the poor old gentleman was hanged
about, three months ago, and two of his
sons met with a similar melancholy acci
dent on the 25th of last month. The
other two and the young lady are still lun
guisiug iu captivity.
* South kn Outhaoes.—The New York
Tribune says very truly:
The almanac-makers who adhere to the |
old style of prognostication would lie jus- j
tided in running down the pages devoted
to the three months immediately preced- j
ing the full elections the stmitypod warn
ing, “About this time lookout for out
rages in the Southern States.” The sup- '
ply of this commodity is always equal to j
the demand; or, at least, the politicians !
take care that if the outrages are scarce
the most shall be mode of what there are.
However quiet the South may be from
November to Aiigust, between August to
November, in the language of the hypoc
hondriacal patriot in the play, “the j
country is in a dreudful state.”
