Readers notice the advertisement of the

fully that they are prepared to supply tho

that they wish to trade with you, and fur
ther showing jtjj.qt they are willing to aid
iu buihiiug up your town by liberally pat
ronizing your county paper. Such men, i
we think, deserve the patronage of our:
merchants, and we hope they will reoeivc
it, knowing as we do, flint our merchants
arc solvent and their trade worthy of so
licitation. And knowing that the Messrs.
Solomon, ns merchants, haye acquired a
high reputation for honesty and fair deal
ing, wo take pleasure in saying to the
tunny merchants who read opr paper, that
they can order from this house on terms
rqnallyns favorably as if they were to
make their purchases iu person, It will j

great money panic has only served to gain
for them the confidence of the people aud
gresily inoreaseil their business. M e hope
that merchants visiting Savannah will not
buy their stock of groceries until they
visit this house, for they may rest assured
that it will prove to their interest. We

Thr Advertisement
of Mr, Dan. Luke, Sheriff of Thomas
county, will appear in our next issue.— '
Mr. Luke will soon open a house for the j
sale of Ethiopian wool, and will sell rags
extensively. His great facility for obtain-1
ing these important articles of trade will
enable him to sell at reduced prices. Dan
has dispensed with the barbarous system
of tying and clippling, and has adopted
the"auioh morAapid, economical and suc
cessful mode of plucking it out by the
pots. Sine<vDau has engaged in the wool
gathering and rag business, wo are inform
ed that the supply of .shirtless and bald
headed negroes is greatly in excess of the
demand iifThofcasville. We respectfully
suggest to Dan to use fertilizing restora
tives and produce another crop in due sea
son for the next Social Equality tight.—
Dan wishes us to say that in accumulating
rags he only takes part of the negroes’
shirts. Paper makers-would do well to
jjend in bids: Wool buyers would
do welt to await patiently, ns Dan’s rapid
accumulations will probably .reduce the
price. The Social Equality damsels of
the Korth can now dispense with thp tongs
as Dan can supply their wants with ffipse
jUw delicate appendages already
frizzed on the curling tongs of nature. M e
hope that Dan will accept no order or
make any negotiations until his advertise

The Successor to Steam.
Under the title of "The Successor to
! Steam,” Dr. 11. Beilis, of Oroningin, has
; published in the /si's, a Dutch journal
devoted to physical science, tho results of
! various experiment conducted with it view
|to discovering a substitute for steam, For
j many years, he says, he has been consider
ing the question "how to transform heat
into mechanical power more advantage
ously than it is done iu our common steam
j engines.” He experimented to see to
i what degree the tension of carbonic acid
given oil by natrium bicarbonate would
amount when heated iu a closp space, and
; discovered among ofhey things that car
bonic acid ot high tension, liquid carbonic
acid especially, to which lie gives the
; name of carbolenjji, is an excellent motive
power, iu place of steam, for engines,
large and small. Dr. Beips Huy* tlmt lie
has experimentally found that aaarbolenm
engine js easily constructed- Engines of
this kind can be used for the great as well
jas the small industries. They pan he used .
I in ships for war purposes, and with a car- j
boleum engine a ship can he raised or
sunk at will, and can bo to made cruise
about under the surface of tho water, for
the reason that the carbolenm is not only :
independent of the air, but can maintain !
the life of tho crow, develop light, Ac.
Tho engines can he used for printing j
presses, tire engines, street locomotives, [
Ac. (iarboleum is also imported for scion- !
tifie purposes. "I havoflipd the satisfac-!
tion,” remarks the discoverer pf this new
motive principle, “to show this experi
ment to several scientific men in Holland,
who have taken the greatest interest in the
matter.” So satisfied is Dr. Beins of the
value of his discovery that he lias had jt
patented in several countries.
