The various modes of using tobacco are
by snuffing. chewing, smoking and dip
ping. It ho* been generally considered
that the latter practice belongs alto
gether to the Southern aud Southwestern
States, hut it is not so; it extends to a cer
tain degree throughout the entire length
mid breadth of the land. Htiuff-dippiug is
so called |ierhaps from the reason that it
is used in small quantities obtained from
the bottle or box, as the case may he, by
dipping it out with a stick or small spoon.
The practice pievuils to a slight extent in
the State of New York, and to n much
greater extent in the cities than in the
country. It originated among the d*mi
numtle, and from them gradually made its
way to other olaenea of society. Two kinds
of suuff are used by the dippers, both of
which, however, are known an Scotch.
Tin difference between them is that one
inis n certain amount of tuble adt mixed
w ith it, and the other hua none. They are
known ns salt Hootch and fresh Scutch.
Fresh Scotch is prepared more in this city
than in iiny other part of the State. The
following is the manner of dipping in New
York: The dipper ia provided with a small
spoon, about half the size of a common
teuapoon, with which she dips n sufficient
quantity of suuff from her bottle. Then
seizing the lower lip with with the thumb
and forefinger of her left bund she draws
it well forward and fills the cavity with the
! bonnehouche contained in the spoon. There
she lets it remain until it is gradually dif
fused through her mouth,expectorating the
1 while, iu n manner that would do credit to
J a veteran. Sometimes the delicacy ia
I iluintily enveloped in a Hue piece of tissue
, |Hper aud deposited ill the same place. In
; the Eastern States the suit Senteli is pre
; ferred, but it is not used in the same way
ns in New York. There the dippers us.-
u small slick of aomii very fibrous wood,
the end of wliio.li is chewed until it n
I sullies a mop-like appearance owing to the
| separation of the fibres. This is dlppid
j into the snuff and then rubbed on the gufos ,
1 and teeth. A large quantity of the suctl
is used by the factory girls iu nil the fVi.il
i erti States, and it may readily he imagined
1 how easily a Imhit of that kind may extend
among n people.
In tlie Southwest, llml is to say in Ten
nessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana,
and Texas, Scotch snuff ia used exclusively
with a stick, as in the Eastern States. The
habit is indulged iu by all eUsses, m secret
by the higher and openly by the lower.
In North and South Carolina "high toast”
snuff' is the kind iu demand. It is pecu
liarly strong and pungent, as it is made hv
very much the same process as tho liuL
Blackguard, being dried on heated screen*
before being ground. In Georgia and
; Alabama Muoonltoy snnlT is the favorite. It
■ is a strong, black suufi', salted, and scented
I with otto of rose. Iu all of the hint
I mentioned States the stick, or “brush.” us
j they call it, is employed. In Pennsylvania,
Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, and the
Western States, there is but little xtiuff
i dipping, but there, as in all other States,
! tho habit is steadily increasing The
; Scotch snuffs above alluded to aro all of a

! ground ns fine as flour. The Mae. at .y ,

I bpping i* apparently very beneficial to
tliti teeth, and it way be that tlie tinhit is
often required from using suuff as a denti
frice. Tho writer of thia article lias travel

that wherever the procure prevailed the

In order to show to wlmt an extent the

quantity the large amounts manufactured i

formed of tho extent to which dipping is (
