Valen tine, the) sculptor, has procured from Yor- ; uiout a block of pure white marble, from ! which ho is ueiw fashioniug a recumbent figure of Gen. Lee, to bo placed on tie ' grand monument that is now being erected ut his tomb, at the Washington : and Lou University, Lexington, Ya. The ’ figure represents Got. Leo reposing iu i.u easy position upon it couch, his head auel shoulders slightly raised above the body, his left arm outstretched by the side ot his sword, his right arm laid across his breast. 11c weuia full Confederate uni form, including hoots and gauntlets, and a light drapery covers nearly the whole form. The appearance is natural and graceful, indicating i>cueeful slumber rather than death. This monument, when surmounted with i such u flue work of art, will be a lusting me ] mortal to one of Virginia’s noblest sons and j patriots. Tho members of this Associu- j tiou are gentlemen well and favorably i known by the entire community, who will see that nothing is left undone that will add to tho beauty and finish of this great J work. IL has, we think, four churches—Presby terian, Baptist, Chridian ami Methodist - jail neat ami elegant buildings, with an ex cellent institution of learning. It is iu the midst of an excellent farming country, and the planters are now out of debt and are I tlmtty, and the purity of society is not • excelled iu any town or country. The men are sober and industrious, kind and i hospitable; ahdthe ladies, God bless them, are heart breakingly beautiful, and sing ; with the sweetness of seraphs, Valdosta can boast of one of the best kept hotels in 1 the Houtli, under the supervision of Mr. j Charles Stewart and his most estimable : iudy, who is a model wife ami makes her j house tlu: traveler’s holin'.
