The Picnic
''RViieerptrd a iiml invitation from Col.
Sinclair to attend n Picnic on Wednesday
last at tlie Messrs. Bowen’s mill, some three
miles from town. The place is suitably
Hibqrt.d 0> such purposes; shady and airy
with nice, co/.v, little places to sit down
and that's about what we did, and looked
at the pretty girls. Two boats were al
most constantly in use on tlie pond. Our
young friend and professional brother, Al
britton, invited us to take a ride which we
readily consented to do. A few strokes of
his oar placed ns quite a distance from the
shore end the centre of the boat on a snag
and the boat flying around like a needle
on a point, presenting to onr mind strong
probabilities that we were going to be
doneed in the darned water. We were not
at all frightened, but felt some uneasiness
and anxiety about our friend who we
thought might become frightened. By
his strength and skill he soon released the
boat and we, having no fear of course, sug
gested that we return to the shore and we
did. The party consisted principally of a
few families, friends and neighbors who
live almost as one.family. We don’t know
when we spent a day more pleasantly, or
felt so sensibly the rapid flight of time.
The dinner was bountiful and excellent in
quality and elegant in preparation. We
wish they would try it over again and let
its know. We have no objection to any
lusty else, but that party jnt suited ns
and we doot care if it isu't any larger the
next time.
A Qa tman Man Says
if von wish to offer a kindness by propo
t.iug to go with a willow ami her family to

winds. If your kindness be offered after

von ask any other tnember of the family,
whether lay and scent or adoj tion, you may
rest assured that you will scarcely have left
the gate until the footing will have tifen ta
ki-n down, and the hose taken tip. and the
shoes rendjilsted, and the widow ’and her
fatuilv, bothdescendants and adopted, will
be on their march to the church to w hich
you had proposed to neeompnny them, es
pecially if the adopted mender of the fam
ily had expressed a most indignant con
tempt for the singing by the choir. This
Quitman man must have been somewhere
else in his life time and felt the weight of a
number six slipper by such a refusal, for
our widows are all members of some church
and have too much respect for truth and
honor to resort to any such contemptible
subterfuges. The young ladies of our
town, we think, with few exceptions, are
pious and independent as to gentjemen’s
courtesies, and certainly would not deal
lightly with the sacred principles of truth
when they could so easily and honorably
say. ‘T am going to church but fully ap
preciating your kindness, I assure you that
I have company quite sufficient and satis
factory.” That is just what a lady would
ay anywhere, and oh you scamp ! you
Have been somewhere else and got busted
and yon can’t make us believe we have a
■widow or young lady in onr town so re
gardless of truth as to act thuslv. We
don’t think a lady would act so anywhere
and we feel hound to vindicate the Quit
man Indict. If any lady has done so she
lias the benefit of onr columns to publish
any circumstances in mittigation.
o
The Grand Jury Presentments,
will, doubtless, be rftid with notch interest
by our readers of this county. We do not
propose to comment upon them, they
speak for themselves. Their recomemla
tion to have a special act hv the Legisla
ture passed authorising the appointment
of five commissioners to look sfter the fi
nances and general interest, of the coun
ty, which duties and responsibilities now
rests upon the county judge does not re-’
fleet upon the official conduct of Judge
Harden. It was done at bis request and
to him it will he a great relief.
Accommodation.

and between Albany and Thomasville will
be ran on the 22d Inst., for theaccoraoda
* tion of visitors to the Floral Fair at

with the schedule bntsuppose the train will

General Prcsentmenents of
the Grand Jury, May Term
Brooks Superior Court.
We tho Gram! Jury, duly sworn for tho first
week of Brooks Superior Court, May Term, beg
leave to submit the following geuer&l present
ments :
Wo have examined the public buildings of the
cuunty, and find thorn in tolerable good condi
lion, but recommend that there bo two more
locks put on the jail, and also sumo repairing
dono,on the jail yard fence.
We find tho road® throughout tho county in as
good condition ns could be expected, with a fow
exceptions. We would recommend that, tho
roads which have been so badly washed up by
tho l&to rains, be put in order as early as prac
ticable.
A committee appointed for that purpose, have
examined the books of the Clerk and Ordinary,
and find them nicely kept and in good condition.
The following report from the committee ap
pointed by the Grand Jury at the last term of
Court, vro deem an intelligent* showing of tho fi
nancial condition of the county which we endorse
and desire it published, as appended with these
presentiments :
To the drawl Jury for Brooks County for May
Term lb<6, budvnor IXnat ,
The undersigned committee appointed by tho
Grand Jury at toe adjourned term of the {Supe
rior Court, held m December lust, ,‘to inspect
the books, vouchers, Ac., of tho County Court and
County Treasurer, in vacation, and report at the
next term of the Superior Court the condition
of said offices, an i too financial condition of the
county as to ns indebtedness and assets,*' beg
, leave to make the follow ing report:
J According to the estimate or Juntos L. Beaty,
- former Ordinary, when he turned over the man
agement of the county business to Judge E. B.
Harden, tim county uhh iudebted in tlie sum of
$8,721,fib. Your committee could not ascertain
the present debt of tlie county exactly, but from
the date before them it cannot bs far from $5,184,
; 64.
i We find tlmt the County Court has aince its or
ganization received from Hues and costs, going
i to the county in criminal cases, cash amounting
i to the sum of $990,70, and notes iu similar cases
. amounting to tut sum of $324, 10, making an ag
! grogate of cash and notes amounting to $1,320,80.
’ ail of which, cash and notes, have been turned
; over to the County Treasurer, as shoirn by prop
t er receipts from that officer.
Bonds to the amount of six thousand djllars
! were issued by tno county. True, there were
! sixty-three bonds of one hundred dollars each,
| but three of these bonds of shorter date were
* only exchanged for throe having one year longer
j to run, so that .sixty only were sold. The debt
of the eoutity for the bonds not yet redeemed,
; amount to $1,24 f i.<U,
feu uihl mat tue Treasurer. 0. W. Stevens,
has received iu nu ney $12,97, and has paid out
$840,23; leaving a b-muice on hand of $2,71. He
has also on hand notes amounting to $.818,75.
From tlie examination we have given the books
lof the Troasmtr, w think that his charges
i a gamut the county are hub rained by proper voucli
' ers and that ins books are neatly and correctly
; kept.
\\ e have examined the bcyiks of the County
[ Court relating to criminal matters, (the county
I hemg interested iu tue tines and costs iu suca
i cases) and we find them kept, showing the vari
ous amounts received for lines and costs, and
I iiow said funds were disposed of, what amount
i was paid to bhenlf and other olfi.iers, ami wfir.t
i amount turned over to too Treasurer., While a
few mistakes were committed at first, yet they
hud been corrected, and umlcr tlie plan now
! adopted by the County Judge, such mistakes are
; not likely to occur again,
It is due to Judge Harden to say, that we oon
| aider that he has made great improvements in the
| matter of county orders. Heretofore there has
been no record kept showing when orders on tho
'1 reastiror were given, to whom given, the
! amounts of such orders, or when they were paid.
: Hence it nag been impossible to ascertain Uefl

ty. Under tue a\ ■■ •cm rec.outly adopted by Judge
Harden, a lr t memorandum of each order is re

We recommend that our Representative, If. G.
Turner, have a special act passed by the Legisla
ture atilho; Lang ihe appointment of live Com
missioners to look after the linancial matters,
roads, bridges, Ac., of of the county, and we
would respoctlully suggest the names'of J. O.
Morton, i’. Wade, it. i. -Denmark, Neil Hendry
and T. A. Groover, as Huitable persons to consti
tute said committee. We would recommend that
they be appointed for the term of four years, and
tiiat they bo exempt from ali other public duties
in the county.
We would also request our Representative to
secure the passage of on act incorporating the
town of lJiJtio, station 17, A. A G. it. li., in this
county.
We recommend that the names of Luke M.
Week*, Charles Rivers and Lli/.abeth Smith be
added to the pauper list.
After due investigation and close calculation,
we recommed that the following assessment of
tax be made on the State tax for tho present
year: To pay jurors, bailiffs and contingent ex
penses of the Superior < ’hurts for the year 187 b,
i2b per cent; for salary of the Countv Judge, 10
per cent.; for the support of pauper*, 5 per cunt.;
for repair of bridges and turnpike, 6 per cent.;
tojiav the legal indebtedness of the county now
due, 20 per cent.; for jail expenses, dieting pris
i oners, Ac., 10 percent.
In making tho above analysis we think it safest
! in oui recommendation of ansesiincnts to make
i the total on the Htate tax 7b per cent,
i Wo desire these presentments published in the
Quitman Reporter and Gallahekh Independent,
and respectfully ask that bis Honor, Judge lian
#eJi, order the samo to be done.
In closing our labors for the week, and as we
arc about to sepai ate to resume our different vo
