At a regular meetiug of Shalto Lodge, No. 237,

Dariaini in Real KMatc.
We are authorised to offer for sole a
t plantation, lying within one and a half
inilea of Quitman, on the most favora
ble terms. It is offered cheap, a small
amount to bo paid when possession iH
given, and all the ballunce in four huduhl
payments. This is a splendid farm, cou
taiuiug four hunJred acres.
ALSO.
A splended house and lot, conveniently
situated to the business portion of the
town. House containing six rooms nil
well fiui lied, with all necessary out build
ings, everything in good order. This will
also be sold cheap and on favorable terms.
Persons desiring to purchase can call at
this offiice as we are authorfccd to sell the
same. may 28-tf
Gupta n Cobb.
This gentleman spent the winter in
Valdosta, after sojourning with his wife
for a while in Floriils. Hu wus not s<i
highly pleased with Florida ns this portion
of Georgia. The captain in early life was
a seafaring man, but for tho last twenty
years Ims beeu a citizen of Wisconsin.
That climate he thinks is too severe for
the health of himsell and wife in tlieir
advanced years and having determined to
spend his winters at least, in Southern
Georgia, he purchased a handsome resi
dence in otic town, and will move from his
western home, whither he has now gone,
to take possession ill October. We hope
the Captain and wife will have a pleasant
aud safe journey home and rutnru to us in
health in the fall.
How Hull.
Soaroely cun a countryman be seen on
otir streets. Our merchants can attend to
all their business ten feet in front of their
stores. That doesn't hurt you merchants
you have your goods. The country man
i doing right, he is working for money
to buy them. Next fall will be a harvest
aud you can sell all you lmve and anew
stock anti get tin* money. While we wish
our merchants well, we hope the planters
will exercise due economy it is the only
road to independence. Our town is a
litttlo excited over the propect of someone
ootniug to town to-morrow. It will be
strange to see a funner in town, it seems
ao long since they used to come to town.
Fish Frys and Picnics
Are every day occurances now. On
Wednesday last, thirty two of the citizens
including ladies and gentlemen made a
raid on the Withlucoochee, at or near
Spuius ferry, aud captured twenty-two of
the fiuuey tribe, aud they have been re
ported to iis as weighing, in tile aggregate,
about twenty-two ounces. Tho whole
number was not sufficient to generute a
lishey odor in a frying pan.
Crops.
The news from the conuty in reference
to the crops is quite favorable. The far-
have been quite busy during the dry
aud beautiful weather and the crops are
thoroughly eleaused and said to be grow
ing finely.
The Constitutionalist has the following
article on the “Sleeping Car Question,"
which we heartily endorse. Every paper
at tile Smith should take the same position
and administer this man Pullman the
leasou he seems to he veuruiug fur:
We are informed that the Pullman com
pany intends to iDvoke the aid of the
.coarts to sustain its present monopoly.
As soon os the two sample Lucas cars leave
the shop at Wilmington. Del., it is be
lieved that the Pullman organization will
enjoin the new company from using or
selling them, on the ground that Mr.
Lucas lias infringed upon oue or more of
the numerous patents that Mr. Pullman
.controls. The inventor of the new sleep
ing-cars has been especially careful to
steer clear of the Pullman patents, know
ing that the company which is in profita
ble occupancy of the Southern roads, car
ries a long purse, slid would surely resort
to iitigaiiou to delay, if uot defeat, the
.appearance of opposition cars. We be
lieve that the Lucas patents are not in
fringements, and that the philosophy of
any injunction at the instance of the Pull
man company would lie simply to retain
as long as possible its present monopoly,
regardless of fair play, justice or the
wishes of the Southern people.
On this subject tbe press of the Sonth
should speak ill a way ttiut will leave Mr.
Fuliman no grounds for misapprehending
Southern seutiment. His quick acquips
tspee in the spirit of the civii rights bill,
y throwing open his cars to negroes, thus
compelling all who wish to travel at night
fcrtably to accept distasteful and de
grading associations, is offensive enough
with* nt the addition of legal devices to
delay the efforts of our people in securing
cars to tlieir liking. We urge upon the
press of the Sonth fhe necessity of letting
their sentiments on this subject be clear'
known. Jfothing else will prevent Mr.
Pullman’s premeditated attack. He will
scarcely want to face an unanimous South.
Outside of considerations connected with
the civil lights issue, the Lucas cars de
serve the support of Southern people.
The proprietors are Honihorn railroad
men, and the cars are especially designed
j for Southern lines. The new car is 20,000
I pounds lighter than the car that Mr. Pull
j man sends to ns from Northern shops.
! They are not top heavy, the extra weight
connected with the berths being sunk
j during the daytime below the seats, and
the Hoor of the car.
The seats of a section do not necessarily
face one another, o that the occupant of
| one berth is not forced to sit all day oppo
, site an unpleasant occupant of the other
I berth. They contain many other devices
! that are new, novel, desirable, and espe
: ciully adapted to the lighter traffic of
Southern roads. The two sample cars will
soon come down the Air Line road, nud
then the managers of Southern roads will
hnve a full opportunity to compare them
with the Pullmait care. If they do not
staud the test., let them ho .condemned.
But if they are lietter adapted to our bus
iness and section, then let them l>e put on.
And we assure Mr. Pullman that any legal
dodge will only serve to bring upon him
nud his cars a deeper and heavier condem
nation from those who were his Southern
patrons. A monopoly is bail enough un
der the best circumstances, but when a
monpoly nnertakes to inaugurate social
equality and drive out all rivals, it he
comse too odious for sufferance. The
Lucas cars are needed, and the Lucas cars
should be granted a fair field and a fair
fight.
The Smithsonian Institution has placed
the work of organizing and securing a
thorough representation of the economic
geology and miueralogy of the United
States under the direction of Professor
William P. Blake, of New Haven, the ob
ject being to secure as complete a collec
tion as possible of mineral resources of
of the country and the chief mining and
metallurgical products at the International
Exhibition, to be held in Philadelpliiu in
1876. This collection will constitute a
portion of the government display made
by the Exeo.tivo Department, in accordance
with the art of Congress.
