THE GREAT EASTERN TIIE ADVANCE! Arrival of the Humbug. Prospects of h Sumll Attendance, lie Cm ut ion >. We lcurn from private sources that the Great Eusteru did a very poor business at Thomasville; from the appoaranco of our steerts ut the time of going to press we think the result will lie the same here. We hope the citizens of Brooks county will act wise in this mat ter, and keep atr<iy from this grind fraud. We have been iufornw ed by a gentleman wlm was in attendance at the Thomasville Fair, that an indivi dual conneuted with them had to leave Thomasville to avoid irreat for some of his unhallowed transactions, and on returning to Quitman, found him here preparing for “show day. ” Remember this and avoid them; we have talked to you on the sub ject before, you have seen the evil your self, and no doubt, many of our readers have, in former days, suffered by allowing themselves to be led away by these vile tricksters. Kutrititininritt at llo.tun. On Friday, the Slst nit, the young la dies and gentlemen of Boston, Ga., gave an entertainment for the benefit of the Methodist Church, to aid in the rebuilding of their ehuroli edilico, which was blown j donwby the recent storm. Quite a number I of chaste and well saleeted charades were played—and very well played. All the parties performed their parts very credita bly; two or three of the young ladies and one or two young gentlemen, to whom j wore assigned the heavier ports of the plays for their practice in those plays, we |do not tliink they can be excelled. To j the ladies of the place much credit is duo, | for their taste in the arrangement of the j scenery, the decoration of the stage, and ! the general ornamentation of the hull. The Quitman Cornet Band, who lmd j gratuitously tendered their services, dis j coursed some of their sweetest pieces dur ! ing the intervals between the act*, contrib uting no little to the success of the enter tainment. We regret to say that, notwith i standing much labor was performed, and j much interest manifested by the Indies, i the attendance did not render a due re ward to merit; but we can assert with : pleasure, that all present were well enter tained, and none re; ret having been there. lAt the close of the plays a large cake, beautifully ornamented, prepared by the ladies for the occasion, was presented by I one of the young ladies and accepted by j otu of the band, with appropriate . re ; marks by each. Exaggerated reports are I generally given of these evening enter ■ taiuments; but our partiality to the eiti j zeus of Boston will not permit us to do ! them injustice by extravagant eulogies, therefore we give the truth unadorned. W* must add that the citizens' kind re | ception. and hospitable entertainment of i the members of the Band, is worthy of j note, and we are requested by some of the ! members to say that the evening spent in Boston will be one of pleasant memories. Drowned. On Wednesday of last week, Judge An- I gus Morrison, of this county, returning from Valdosta, Lowndes county, whither be had gone with bis friend, Mr. Devane, who had been wickedly, unjustly, and uu i righteously and illegally arrested under a wari antissued by E. C. Wad •, United States Commissioner, charging him with an at tempt to rescue James Gay, a prisoner in the custody of James Murphy, Wade’s ap pointee as Deputy United States Mar shal. The only thing said or done by Mr. Devane, was a simple proposition to buy some hogs from Wade's Marshal, Murphy, whose hog record in Colquitt County was not very clean. The attorneys of Mr. Devane, fully conscious of their client’s innocence, and well knowing the vindictive and oppressive spirit of the Quitman Bev enue Collector Commissioner, and that he would never listen to any evidence on the part of a defendant, advised their client to go with his friends to Mr. Joshua Griffin, who is also a United States Commissioner, and not entirely soleless and loßt to all sense of honor, w ith the view to make ar rangements with him for Mr. Devane to give himself up and execute bond for his appearance at the District Court, knowing that the heartless Commissioner here would exact a bond that could not be giv en. (In' reference to the attorneys, we speak tiiis as our own conclusions from the circumstances, and not by authority from them.) Returning to his home as above stated from! this- mission of rfcigli borly kindness, after separating with his friends, who had accompanied him, after crossing the river, had wandered through the river swamps, passing through thick ets and bogs seemingly impassable, until be got back to the river a mile or more above the ford, and probably being bewil dered, attempted to recross the river. His horse plunging into very deep water, he was probably thrown by the leap and was drowned. The last seen of him alive was on Wednesday evening. His body was found on Saturday afternoon, near where he entered the river. His horse swam out to a little island, and the bridle reins caught in the bushes and fastened him, I where he remained without food or water until Saturday— three days and nights. Judge M. was interred on. Sunday last. He was a pronfinent citizen, a kind neigh bor, an affectionate husband and indulgent! parent, and esteemed by all who knew j him. He will be much missed by Ids \ family and neighbors and the Presbyterian church, of which he was a member. IHfc God grant that he may never be missed, | but be ever present in tangible form to ; the would he indiscriminate persecutor i and oppressor of the people, whose op | pressions was the prime cause of his 1 death. The Kdlror’a Wonder. We dci Thin dot if our subscribed, who we have indulged so long and labored so hard to please, are not satisfied with our efforts, or do they think We hate an inex h.tnstible fund of greenbacks? If the former we hope they will inform ns by let tor, and we will publish a remission of all indebtedness. If the hitter we painfully inform them that they are mistaken; we haven’t got them, and we can’t make them on our press. But wo arc compelled to have them, and those who will not pay us we will hnve to stop slieiv paper. We are determined not to involve ourself, and those who have paid us shall not be disap pointed. We know that our subscribers arc able, to pay, and it is not from a disinclination to pay that it is not done, but from a mis taken idea of our ability to supply them with the paper without the money. We do hope that our delinquent subscribers will not he ho indifferent to our wants, but will encourage ns by immediate payments. Our paper is just six months old, and we have no doubt our subscription list is the largest, of any weekly in Southern Georgia. It requires money to sustain it, and we must hire it!
