An early sottlor of Chicago relates an
incident in which ho was an actor; "As
I sat there in tho long ago, and, shroud¬

a fortunate future for myself I heard the
muffled tread of innumerable feet draws

Alexander And Diogenes. V
- V <
Alexander tho Groat was a famous
conqueror who led his soldiers from
country to country winning battles,
and adding all theso territories to his
empire until ho had gained control of
nearly all of tho world when it is said
that he became very sad because there
were no more worlds to conquer. In
Alexander s time there lived at Atbeua
in Greece a famous philosopher named
Diogenoso. lie was a queer fellow,
indeed. Unco ho came into the streets
of Athens in tho middle of tho day
carrying a lantern and looking as if ho
wore searching for something. Some
one asked him what ho was seeking.
"A man,’ replied Diogenes; "I have
found childieu at Sparta, and women
in Athens, but men I have never soon.’
lie meant by this that tho Syxu tans
were no wiser than tho little children,
while the Athenians wore so fond of
luxury and easy living that they were
more like women than men. Diogenes
always wore the meanest of clothes and
slept in a tub, which ho carried about
with him. When Alexander visited
Athens ho wont to see Diogenes who
was comfortably basking iu tho sun be¬
fore his tub, and, wishing to impress
the philosopher with his great impor¬
tance as a famous king and conqueror
ho said, "I aui Alexander wnat favor
will you ask me?’ “Nothing,’ said Dio¬
genes, "except that you will aland out
of my sunshine.’ Alexander was so
much impressed with the independence
of Diogenes that, be said. “If I were not
Alexander, 1 would ha Diogeties,' which
I suppose be thought was the greatest
compliment he could pay him,— Chat
