Clarksville is one of the healthiest
towns in Northeast Georgia, and is sur¬
rounded l>y some of the grandest natur¬
al sceneries in the United States.—
Tallulah and Toccoa Falls; the lovely
and fertile vally of Xaeoochee, and
,the towering old Yonah, beside many
other places of minor importance—all
accessable to pleasure seekers from this
point.
We have neither time or space at

hereafter give in detail her many ad¬

ATHENS LETTER.
Superior Court has been in session j
here during the past week with a full
attendance of lawyers. Jadgo* Erwin
presided with thus grace and diguity
for which ho is noted, vvh.D that prince
of Sohe.itors, A. L. Mitchel, was on
hand striking terror to the heart, of
lawbreakers. As long as Georgia has
such uu-n as Col. Mitchel to watch her
interests, she is suio to receive justice,
tor to-day he Blands at tho top of fits
profession as a criminal lawyer. Judge
Pottle will preside this week, when tho
civ 1 docket will be taken up.
'The Opera house was crowded to ne
overflowing on Saturday night last to
witness the rendition of Shakespeare's
most popular tragedy, Richard tho HI,
on the battle of Bosworth field, by one
of America's greatest tragedians. Thos.
W. Keene. 'The play was excellent
throughout, and received prai. o on all
sides. For almost three hours the en
tiio audiouee sat as if spell-bound and
in the lust, act when tho two warriors
met in a hand to hand Conflict, and the
tire tlashod from their sabres the enthu¬
siasm was unbounded, and when one
iell pierced through with his antagonists
sword, but yet arose again and clinched
with his adversary in his death agonies,
the people arose from their seats and
sent up cheer after cheer at tho grand¬
est of the i-ceuo. The play was the
best ever presented on tho board here,
and if it is ever repeated the opera
house will net hold tho crowd
Busiuess seems to be good here now,
and tlie streets .re crowded with wag¬
ons bringing in produce from the eur
roundiug countries and as a consequence
the average merchant wears a happy
smile and seems to bo in peace with all
maukiud.
The exposition is attracting large
crowds ot Athenians, and a large dele
gation of studeors are going down
Thursday to take it in. From ail ac¬
counts it must bo a grand show indeed,
and every Georgian ought to see it, for
then he can fully realize tho immensity
of the manufacturing interests of our
loved Southland, ami also meet there
his Northern brethren, and shako hands
across the hloouy chasm, and forget
past differences in the harmony he sees
displayed there, for it is indeed a na¬
tional exposition in tho fullest sense of
the word—knowing no South, no North,
but grasping bauds in one common
cause for the formation of the manufac¬
turing interests. The peoplo have
even gone so far as to invite Gen.
Sherman to visit it—he who laid our
beautiful country to waste and with fire
and pillage, made homes, once the pride
of their owners nothing but smoking
ruins. and helpless women and
children's cries were unheeded by -the
fiend ns he applied hi8 burning torch
to their homes, leaving them in utter
deslation, not knowing where to turn
for aid. It is right to forget the past,
or at least to forget the cause for which
we fought so gallantly and lost; but
are things that will live in the hearts of
every true born Southern man, and this
should be one. There are some things
the South can never forget, and the
North should not expeot it, for memory
is indeed the only solace left to u*. and
if that too could be taken, it would be
the greatest 1ob3 ye» unstained, for the
South chronicles, as her proudest birth
right, the memory of her departed
dead, who sacrificed their lives upon
the altar of their country for what they
deemed their country’s good; and
though the flag under which they fought
so gallantly has been rent assunde
Still 'twill live in song and story,
Though its fiidd aro in the dost;
But perhaps it is lies; to forget
loss brought upon us by the heart!
uess’ef Gen Sherman but it will
many years yet before it is done. It is J
saidjthat it is far easier to forgive then to j
forget, for wnile and it is true have in forgiven this instance, him in j
we may j
our generosity, still his cruelty is nor
•forgotten.
There is a groat deal of sickness hern, j
and it does not seem to abate much. !
Mr. James Saye, one of A:bens’
respected citiizens, died on tbo 17th
instant, of paralysis and congestion m ;
the lungs. He was in excellent .-pints j
on Monday, and attended to his bust
ness during the day, and at night said, !
on coming home that he felt hotter than
ho bad for some time. During supper,
while engaged in conversation with his
family, be complained of a pain in his
sid, and was removed to bed, but never
spoke again, and sank very rapidly
until death roDased him of his suffer¬
ings, Ho leaves a wife and a large num¬
ber of relatives to mourn bis death.
Great preperations are being made
to entertain the members of the meth
od st Conference , which convents here
on the doth of the present month
Chickens already command a good
price, and by that time they will r oost
high, tor methodist preachers are death
on chickens, and the people knowing
this, are going to have tried chicken to
feast the preachers upon, as nothing
will suit them as well. Bishop McTyeire
will preside over its deliberations, and
some grand preaching is expected.
