STRONG DRINK IS A CURSE. it seetDS strange to us why men drink intoxicating liquors, while they have everv reason to know that it ts tho leading canse df al. ost every nritne committed, and every other disaster, than befalls the human race—that it destroys -the mind, body, and in the end, tho soul. Many of our most talented young men. of the present ago, a ho should, in tho future, fill the honor¬ able and responsible positions that are now. many of then-, (aud ought to he) .tiled by good men, suffer themseives to become eiaves to that destroying agent and instrument of satan, become -v holly'unfit for business of every cha’s ter, that would tend to eievate them :n the estimation of their fellow man, and finally, bring them-to a degrada¬ tion, from which they can never rise. We say it seems strange. Is it to d; 11 trouble? It only increases it ten .Aid. Is it because they love it ? The rame they indulge the greater the ap ; ire. Is it to make them feel stout, und rich, or to use language which they have not tho cheek to use when sober ? When they get eobdr they feel weaker and poorer than ever before, and in reality they aro. Weaker men¬ tally and physically, and poorer, be ctaase the monev and time spent is gone ■drove:; at d meaner, because they have used language unbecoming a gentle ' xc.a. > We copy the following from tbs .11 lantu Constitution, lGthinst: “The law-abiding north will have to yield killed a point or two. Three negroes an inoffensive young druggist about 1 o'clock at night, while on his way home. This much for a deed which, had It occurred in Georgia, would have sent up a howl The next step was a public meeting held almost under the eaves of thecapitol, in which a resolution was introduced to lynch the accused parties, If this meeting had been held in Georgia it would have been denounced as an assemblage of khklux. For The Advertiser, A Sail Affair. BLAirsvillk Ga., Jan. 21st, 1880. Mr a ditOe:—T heie was a terrible affair took place in our county ou the night of Jan. 5th, which resulted in the murder of Win. Townsel. Those con¬ cerned in this cruel homicide, are sup¬ posed to be Arthur Owenby and his son, tho brother-inlaw and nephew of Townsel. They have been maliciously designed toward each other for some timo. I will not enter the full de¬ tails of this sad and deplorable oc¬ currence.- suffice it to say, whiskey was the prime cause—as it is of almost eve ery crime that darkens the history of our country. When will our fellow men learn to cease placing an enemy in their mouths to steal away their brains, aud cause the eternal destruction of their undying souls? Cnly think; on tmmday evening Townsel was in good health, aud buoyant spirits, but.this | foul enemy of the humau race, robbed ' him of bis and ere the last rays reason; | of the evening star had sank behind the Western bids, the stroke was made that severed soul and body. Oh ! for a general -reformation on the subject of temperance. Our country is degraded and demoralized by this demon of hell, and still the people continue its manu¬ facture, and excessive uee. I verily believe there are persons who would distill if it were a hanging crime. They are as much devoted to it as the heathen Chineotohis opium, or the rude Hot¬ tentot to his devilish shrine. In cou elusion 1 would add; May tneannals our country never be stained with another deed so deplorable. Tianiiefa But^ nay eft the day come when ' ituT temperance shall float triumphantly over our whole country. Then we will rise from our fallen state, and like tho brightest of constellations, shine among the nations of the earth. May presper i iry rain copiously all over our land, j More soon. , aarox Foot; New York, January 19— There is every prospect of long aud hitter liti¬ gation ever the will of the late Frank Leslie, who bequeathed to his wife most of his property including the trade mark ‘Frank. i.esHe '’ His 'oldest son will contest tbo giving away of this name, ott the ground that he had been Baptized by it, and that his father's name was Henry Carter. It is proba¬ ble that a charge of undue influence ou the part of Mrs-Leslie will be one of tbo objections to the brobation of the will. __ Charleston, S. C., January 19.— Oliver C. Ross, son of a wealthy mer¬ chant at. Greenville, has been courting a Miss Estella Cavingel, a poor but be .utiful young lady, contrary to his father’s orders. Day before yesterday | was his twenty first birthday, and shortly after eating his dinner he met Alias Cavingel and both 'weut off quiet ly nnd were married. Yesterday the son went to bis father and told him all about it. Major Ross immediately went into his library, and, returning with a pistol, shot, his son through the breast, ioflictiog what is believed 'to bo a mor¬ tal wound.
