ALEX. CHURCH, Editor.
W. !! BELL, Associate.
Cleveland, Georgia, February 14, 1SS0‘
TO THE PUBLIC.
The editor of the Echo sold out the
Press; not to me. After this sale I
leared the press, and commenced the
publication of the Advertiser There
_
was no contract with me and Mr Wilson,
the editor the Echo, or with mo and any
one else, for mo to pay any of the debts
or to fill any of his contracts. 1 f Wilson
has noted in bad faith with any one,
certainly I am not to blame for it, and
it d >os soom to me that there is no prin¬
ciple of justice that will require me to
fill or perform tho contracts of Air.
Wiison. I am not able to do it, there¬
fore I shall not try to do it. I feel cer¬
tain that when all understand the
situation they wall attach no blame to
Inc . A ex. Church,
Editor and Publisher of the Cleveland
A dvartiser.
We learn that Hon. Jas. M. Smith of
Oglethorpe, is spoken nf as a candidate
for Georgia’s next Governor,
i
We believe that every name that
is now on oor subscription book -is rev
fectlv responsibe, and will, in a short
time pay us their subscriptions.
We call the attention of our County
Treasurer to the following language of
the code in reference to his duty. It
mads as follows:
“To publish at the door of the Court
bouse, and in a public, Gazette if there
is one published in tho county, a cony
r-f id annul statement to the Orrdi
nnry ’
If all of our subscribers would come
now and pay us their subscriptions, it
would place us upon a firm foundation,
and enable us to give them a better
sheet. Who will come first? Tour
interests are equally involved with onrs.
We presume that Post masters every
wfiirra know their duty, and if our pa
' per is not taken out of the office in any
part of the country to which we are
sending it, we hope they will notify us
of the fact. We will also say to all to
whom we are sending the Advertiser, that
1 if they do not intend to bo subscribers
they will do ua a great favor b y notify-,
mg.us at f nec. as we pay -cash for
.blank paper and postage.
SECTIONAL PREJUDICE.
There is nothing, in our opinion, that
so much rerards the prosperity of the
United States, or even’States and coun¬
ties, as sectional prejudice and jealousy.
We cannot expect to have a Chief Ex
.
ee.iuive, who will do all sections justice
so long as this evil exists in the hearts
of the people. There is too much par¬
ty and too little principle. The sectior
a! abuses on both sides are morally
wrong, and are only calculated to in
crease sectional hate. It is a well
known fact, that men who aresabmerg
ed with the politics of tho present day
has bnt little of the genuine charity
about them. One section need not ex
pect to be favored by another, until
both are willing to concentrate on pure
principles, regardless of party feeling,
Ic seems that the Northern States are
jealous of the South; and also Southern
States are jealous of the North; and so
far HR party is concerned there is ample
? msmi on both sides for jealuosy, but as
< t Jthe genuine principle, rbere is Dot the
shadow of: reason for it-' We aro eaii?~
lied that there are hundreds of good
men r.mn in in ,h„ the „„rth«,-n northern states «,!,«• who wou'd
b • u filing do jutice ta the south: and, t n
• tbe other-hand,-there are hundreds if
good men in the southern elates who
would be glad lo do justice to the north,
this ?t etioiRil barred could only be
eradicated, and a kind, generous and
chavitibi ■ pirit substituted Instead.
We are now. arid ever have beet) an
advocate of the true principles of de¬
mocracy. but we have never been an
advocate of the building no of one
section to .the destruction of another.
i
as we do not believe that to be in any!
part democratic.
Now, we want a President, not of one
particular state, or specially favored j
section of the states, but a President of;
the so called united states;’* good man; I
not a o party President—one ___„ who u „ ,____ loves
his whole country Is this hind of a
president to be obtained by abuse, un¬
just and unfounded ? Not at all. The
true democrats north and south, must
select a good man, it matters not where
he- lives: honesty is the firstjnecessarv
qualification, and a knowledge) of what
a combination of states needs for their
peace and prosperity is tile next, and
come like a band of true brethren, to
his support. In our opinion, this kind
of a move will insure us a good presi¬
dent, and would no doubt, to a great
extent, quiet the disgusting, and un¬
friendly controversies which aro at pret;
ent creating so much excitement in the
great political world. This we believe
should bo the manner in which every of¬
ficial in the united state whose election
is in the gift of the people should be
selected .{from the President down to the
constables of the Militia districts.
These are some of our opinions briefly
stated. Some of our friends, and breth¬
ren of the press may differ with us, bnt
if they will show us a better line of
policy, we will fall in with them, and
advocate ic to the best of our ability;
but; we jnust have satisfactory evidence
in this matter.
If wo have anything to do with ptfli
'
ticSi it n)ust; bo in a slrat0 forwa , rd aud
honorabl« way- We want no rings or
cliques—no under-gronnd trickery, but
let ail of our oleetions be held, with per¬
fect freedomat the ballot box 'o all who
are justly entitled to that priviledge.

Scene of a Justices' Coart On
High tower.
The court house is a remnant of some
old bourn, consisting of sleepers aud
sills only. Ic is’no.iterl in a bend ■ of
Hightower creek, so close to it, that you
hardly could hear it thunder, mucaless
the voice of reason; and Oid Bouydno
doubts whether they could hear the
voice of reason, if there were no creeks
In my first visits to these courts, where
justice is to be had only so' fast as they
can ho reversed, .1 would hurry off at
high speed, to he in time .-is I thought
but soon learned it was of no use, for
the court was never ready for business*
till its blond was raised to the ther¬
mometer of about three sheets m the
wind- Then you could begin to see a
display of business-dike qualifies. And
really, when their is no whiske ; likely ro
be had, all matters are continued bv
the court, for providential causes-, but
when it is plenty, you will soon bear
tho court \\a a business like tone), order
