weather for the purpose. Wheat ground j
on a very cold day will cause the Hour!
to feel roujrh an i sandy to the touch, >
and the bread made from it will become
dry and. ! ard. This Is caused by the
''Oth'n of cold air acting with the burrs
■ r.rindin-.:, and causes the meal to bolt 1

ir roved it to be correct, that if the
wheat is good and put in proper order
before grinding, and then properly
ground and bolted, during the latter
parr r.f October, is will keep sweet and
good for years, and if kept in a cool,
dry place, there will he no danger of
worms or sourness in the flour.
Variety of Food It is a well-es¬
tablished fact that a single kind of food
is not enough for the best growth, health
ani comforts of animals. Like ours
eelves, the stock which we keep doos
relish a change of diet, thrives batter
whith a change of pasture, so to speak,
and gives fuller returns for the trouble
of providing the variety o{ foods.
Coarse fodder should be mixed with
that which is of a finer nature: and the
highly-nitrogenious fed with substances
weak in nitrogen! * Some
farmers will
feed their sheep on corn one morning;
ard harle.v or oats the next, and thus
keep up a perpetual surprise; highten- j
ed by a lick of salt now and then. It i
is the same love of change which makes
the colt, cow, and even the oldest horse |
feel glad when turned into a now field.
Laxative Bread— Take of coarse
Scotch oat meal, one pound: vrbeaten
flour, one pound; coarse ordinary flour,
one pound; good yeast sufficient; mix
properly, let rise and bake. The bread
keepB well, and a two pound loaf will be
' sufficient for a week by taking a por¬
tion once or twice a day in conjunction
with ordina-y bread. This formulae
was proposed by Dr. W. H- Taylor in
the London Lancet, as most effectual
iu cases of obstinate constipation.
Breeding Piles,—T ake of laudnum
two drachms; fluid extract of ergot,
four drachms; fiuid extract cranesbill,
four drachms: tonnic, twenty grains
wafer enough to make two ounces; mix
Inject one teaspoonfui with a small
glass syringe morning and night: also
inject cold w ater each time before going
to Stool.
Colds.—B oil two ounces flaxseed in
one quart of water: strain and acid two
ounces of rock candy, one half pint of
honey, juice of three lemons; mix and
let all boil well: let cool and bottle.
Dose, one cupful before going to bed,
one half cupful before meals. The hot¬
ter yon diink it the better.
To Cere a Cough.—Roes' a lemon
very carefully with ut burning ft;
when i: is thoroughly hot, cut and
squeeze it into a cop upon three ounces
of sugar, finely powdered: take a tea
spoonful whenever your congh troubles
you It is as good as it is agreeable to
the taste.
Coffei? Cake.— -One cup of
one of sugar, one cup of molasses, one
cup of c<fiu u:)ffufc. four or five cups of
flour, one pound of raisins (only one
and a half cups are necessary). Spice
lo taste.
To make the complexion white and
soft, Use tepid water containing a little
powdered borax for bathing the face
and hands every morning and evening
Eggs often turn black when boiled
bard- If they are put in boiling water
ten minutes, and then into cold water,
the yelk will remains bright color.
Lemon Cream.—T ake a pint
thick cream and put ft to the yelks
two eggs well beaten, four ounces of
fine soger and thin rind of a lemon:
boil it up. then stir it till almost
put tbe juice of a lemon In a dish or
bowl and pour the cream open it,
ring it til! auite cold.
