WAR AGAINST NEWSPAPERS.
j
Quire a stir has been created in
Southern newspaper circles, on account
of the fact that a few davs ago a secret
meeting was held in Chicago, by the
Western paper makers. These monop¬
olists went into secret, session and re
solved that the price of printing paper
should advance to one-half or three
fourths of a cent per pound—and the
pries of paper advanced: some of the
members of this secret organization,
boasted that the price of printing pa- 1
per should advance to one hundred per |
cent by the first of .May next. Why
, this rite in printing paper? The tai ifis
on the chemicals are the same—all the
rue;- sary elements for the manufacture
, p-«por are the same—then how is it
those manufacturers have raised
, t. s ? Simply because they have

e uupr,it ion. and lcfo the publisher at
their mercy. I
We apprehend that this unprcceden-.
ted snide towurds n.onopoly will not
very seriously affect the large publish
iug house.- t-f (he country, or the great
leading political organs Oi the day; but
it is a death blow ? o newspapers such as
ours and' hundreds of others—local
coLUty papers—sectional papers—reii
gious papers—such newspapers as in
which the people feel-an immediate inter
est. Why? Because these newspapers
—these secular papers are unable to
compete with this great Jugernaut of
oppression.
The press all over the country is
clamoring againts this species of op
pression. iet tiro people call upon
their members in Congress to take off

ry for the manufacture of paper and off
the paper itself. Then the newspaper
men of this land can laugh at the boast¬
ed threats of these unprincipled ‘re
ceivera of customs.'
It is just os
rnrpdssfble for us to buy paper and ink,
and all other things necessary to the
publ’cation of a newspaper without
money, ns it is for a man to live without
eating and drinking. A word to the
wise is sufficient.
It has been predicted by some of the
Astronomers, that during the present
seveD years that great pleagues were
to visit the United States, such as new
‘diseases, over which pHysiciaus can
havo no control: Tornadoes, earth¬
quakes, etc., destroying thousand of
the inhabitants of the earth, and from
the startling accounts which we see
in many of our exchanges, the begiuiog
of such things may bo at hand.
We offer for sub, on good terms a
Patterson Piano, no doubt worth three
hundred dollars, for the low price of
two hundred and fifty dollars; also a
Patterson Organ worth at least one hun¬
dred and fifty dollars, for eighty-five
dollars If you want a good bargain
now is the time
The custom of the daily press of this
day publishing every little and big
crime, with ail its attendant circum¬
stances is a most demoralizing one,
and deserves rebuke. Every homicide,
suicide, fraticide, rape, incest, adultery,
fornication and kindred crime, find.,
ready type, press and paper to give it
circulation. It is a deadly evil, ami
perpetuates crime by that quality or
Tape-vi,»n in humanity to imitate

AN ESSENTIAL REFORM.

t i.e f dlowing extract from the Atlan
ta Constitution:
■‘An hour;- study of the various ooun
ty bo< .;s in tbe comptroller general’s
office will di-i tose a state of affairs that
is simply alarming. Mr. Robert Har¬
deman. one of the most efficient officers
ibe sta'e ever had, has paid especial
attention to the investigation of this
pubject. and the r‘e3nlts that he has been
able to fix from bia own personal knowl¬
edge of the value of properties returned
;s astounding. He can point out piece
after piece of proo«rty returned r $HW
that could r.ot be b muht for $ 5,000 — or
in the same p rupee io >. H • ctdiu
stances to the w.iter of pieces of pro¬
perty returned at $J00 or $150, when
the real value was $15,000, Indeed a
careful survey of the boobs will show
that the returnable values are almost
•purely arbitrary—depending on the
conscience, or lack of it, of the proper
ty-hulders.'
Beggars on Horseback.
Iu the narrow, utipaved streets of
San Antonio, Texas, rido beggars moun
ted on shaggy little donkeys and look¬
ing all around for some body to give
them aims. Theae follows are great
brawny Mexicans, with fiery black eyes,
quick to catch sight of m noy. If you
toss a coin to one of t,beso beggars—
nothing less than a five cent, piece will
do—he is sure to catch it in his bat, and
from there it will be slipped into some
pocket of flic ragged clothes. Then he
will grin, touch his replaced bat, and
ride steadily on. His home, probably
iu the outskirts of the town, is called a
•jacal, - and is built with upright posts,
stray boards, bits of cloth, and all sorts
of materials, and thatched with straw*
It contains but little furniture, yet shel¬
ters heaps of sweet potatoes, garlic and
red peppers—sufficient food to suppoit
existence.
