Catawba Ii.ne. —Sweet catawba
has booooio a national tvine. it is
heavy, linn flavored, and will keep in
every style of paeftaffo. in any clitnato.
Rub a little oil or butter on burns
and cover with soda, This is for slight
burns, which many are always gel ting
in tt o kitchen. If the air is kept from
hums and cuts, they will heal rapidly,
for ihis reason burns are often covered
with glue.
Whitewash.— When properly np"
plied. whitewash not only prevents
the decay of wood, but it is greatly con¬
ducive to the healthfuloesa of build¬
ings, whether wood or stone.
A Goon Disinfective. —Copperas
dissolved in water and mixed in wbite
wash, and applied to barns, out houses
fences, etc., mak03 them va ry unpleas¬
ant mr rats and vermin, and will des¬
tory ail noxious odors.
Forest Cake—H alf a pound of
bu tter, one pound of sugar, three eggs,
weii beaten, one lemon or nutmeg, one
teaspoonful soda, dissolve in the lemon,
dour enough to make a soft batter,
about three pounds; roll very thin and
bake brown.
SPANpsjr Costard. If your family
number six take eight yolks of eggs,
«>ght teaspoonfuls of sugar, beaten
very ligjic, adding flavor if you like,
put over a slow fire, stirring all the
time until quite thick; then have small
.Bancors, either of glass or china and
.pour some on each saucer; to be served
Xu this way cold; powdered almonds
are very delicious on it.
Spiced Apples.— Eight pounds of
apples pared and quartered; four
pounds of sugar, one quart of vinegar,
one ounce of thick oinn&moa. one
half ounce of cloves boil the vinegar
sugar and spice together put tin the
apples while boiling and let them
remain until tender (about twenty
minutes) then put the apples in a jar,
boil down the syrup pntil, tbiek, and
pour over them.
Gravy for Potatoes,— Put a
spoonful or moro of butter, according
to the quantity of potatoes you havo 1
into a frying pan and set over tne fire
until brown, being careful not to scorch
it. Mix a spoonful of flour in a .cup of
thin sweet cream or milk if one has no
cream; pour into the browned butter,
boil up, season with pepper and a little
salt, if necessary, and turn over the
.boiled potatoes.
Fearful Vengeance,— Startling
reports reach Baltimore by the steam¬
boat Planter of a (colored man being
horribly beaten a day or two ago in
St. Mary’s County by two neighbors
of the same color. From the various
reports of the circumstnnce, it seems
that about six months ago the victim
betrayed the daughter of a neighbor,
but this was not known until a few
weeks ago. When the father of the
girl became aware of her condition he
.
deliberately made up his mind to pun¬
ish hor betrayer. Accordingly he sent
him word that he rvanted him to come
and assist in breaking a young colt
to the plow, to which request the un¬
suspecting man responded promptly,
but, on arriving at the designated place
he was quickly seized by the father and
brother of the girl, and taken into
a stable, where they tied him fast, pre¬
viously stripping off his coat and un¬
derclothing, that they might adminis
tor their blows upon his bare back.
Five heavy birch-rods were in read¬
iness and his captors immediately
began their work of torture, th9 blows
inflicted by thoir muscular arms falling
upon the quivering flesh of their help
less prisoner.
One hundred strokes ware allotted
to edch rod, and the whole five were
worn out in the course of their ven¬
geance- When he was unable to move
from his fearful agony. Ono of his
eyes wore knocked out and the fbh
upon his back was frightfully lacerated
and dripping wth blood. The unfor¬
tunate fellow was taken to his home
by some friends, but in spite of all aid
will die from the effects of his awful
punishment.
