The following lines should be kept
continually before our eyes. Read it,

To do good for good is man like
To do evil for evil, is beast like.
To do good for evil, is God Jke.
To do evil for good, is Devil like.
Mr. John Logan and wife of Pleasant

confined to his room for several moDths,

MOSSY CREEK CAMP-MEETING.
The meeting this year at Mossy Creek
camp-ground was a success. The order
was good, the weather was fine, the
congregations large, and the preaching
earnest and practical. The pastor of
the circuit was assisted by Revs. W. R.
Foote, Jr., W. J. Cofer, A. J, Deavors,
Dr. Rogers, N. E. McBreyer, Geo. K.
QuilliaB, A. W. Quillian, J. Neut.

tents.occnpied by Mr. Wiley Quilian aDd
Mr. High Smith, The entertainment and
hospitality of the tent holders was cor¬
dial and excellent. Many expressed
themselves as having enjoyed the meet¬
ing more than any meeting held there
for years- The tent holders will, doubt¬
less, recover tbe arbour before another
meeting.
A NARROW ESCAPE. |
A party of seven nr eirht persons,
ladje.s end gentlemen, from J ickson
county, on their way to Nannochoo Val¬
ley, spent Wednesday night in our town
It was their intention to camp under an
old shed near town, but was persuaded
by Mr. Virgil McAfee to sock another
place, uh tho shed was considerably
dangerous. During tho night tho old
shed fell down, and had tho parties
been campod under it they might havo
met serious damages. Mr, McAfee de¬
serves their thanks for his thoughtful¬
ness in averting a calamity.

TEMPERANCE.
Another weeks’ work is finished, and
we are nearer the end of the lifo race—
nearer the gates of the celestial City—
nearer Heaven and God- Quo after
auother, all are passing away. Some
op tho golden stairway through the
gates into the Beuiab land. Otbets
down the dead river rail road, over the
precipice into the dark vaults of eternal
night, “where the worm dioth not, and
the fire is not quenened." We ought
not to tuourn the case of the former,
who are sweetly resting in their angel
guarded tombs, gilded with immortali¬
ty. waiting for the dawning of tho re-.
8urreetiou uiorn But for those stats
that havo shone so brightly for a time
in the world'- sky and set in darkness,
and the countless other stars who have
sunk in the gloom of destruction, un¬
known and unnoticed. But who
mourns? Go to the relatives of those
who, from time to time fill our jails and
State prisons. Go to that poor woman,
who, in some hovel in a lone dark alley,
toiling with worn Augers, throbbing
b ain and aching neart, Go to the pa¬
rents of some of the young men of our
l md who are, with character that ought
to build instead, their future happiness, buildiDg
up a foul and fostering ocean
of corruption. Go to Hie wife and mo
ther, who waits until the midnight
hours for him she still clings to ami
loves. These are they that mourn and
weep tears of keoneat anguish over
those husbands, sons and daughters
who once went prattling around moth¬
ers’ knees, and every now and then step
upon her toes; but mother could not
get offended at that little crime; it was
my little darling babe did that little of¬
fence and I can bear it.
But now oh, alas! alas! see where
they step, right upon mothers heart,
aud have crushed it beneath their un¬
hallowed feet. Her prayers,and admo¬
nitions are past by as an idle talo, uu
cared for and unnoticed by them. We
have heard young men say, “this day I
am resolved to drink no more liquor,"
but they have not proved it yet. There
is but one way they could make me be¬
lieve they meant what they said.
Tho man who will stand behind tho
counter aud deal out spirituus liquor to
his fellow man and make him drunk
with it, woe to that man that pats the
bottle to his neighbor’s mouth and
makes him drukeu. Oh, how horrible
aDd disgusting it is, to think a mao
would pretend to make a living in such
a way as this, when he knows that it is
contrary to God s laws, and all that is
sacred and good. But ‘‘there is a way
which seemeth right unto a man, but
the end thereof are the ways of death.”
YVe loath this liquor traffic with a last
ing, uncompromising, bitter hatred.
Now may humanity weep over this
withering, wide sweeping, boiling river
of death, that is so thickly covered with
the wrecks of those who might have
been pillars in the grand temple of God.
Hate is too feeble a word to express
our abhorrence of this loathsome bev¬
erage that is striping our laud with
graves, and a hell with the damned.
Instead ol the gems of thought, and
mighty intellect to shape aud guard tho
future of our country, we bear the dis¬
gusting sound of oaths from the bloated
sot, the screach of the maniac, the cry
of those in poverty and distress.
jSS'fiSr' fashion has cursed TO humau 2 ££iSrs 21
forms and
danmed millious oi human souls. They
do not look into tho future, but without
heedinn tho warning voice they rush j i
madly on until their souls aro with the
wailing multitudes of the lost. We are
waiting for the day when God shall j
c ush and tr ad upon this mass of c.-.r
ruption that is robbing tire earth < f iis
beauty and filling the land with mourn
<*rs. until it shall be everlastingly and
eternally dead. Yours.
