Will there he no candidates for Or-,
dinary in Whito county ?
Our Tax Receiver, Mr. Simeon Pal
iner, has closed his books, and returned
them to the Ordinary on Thursday last
We thought for a long while that we
would not indulge iu politics, hut wo
find wo must do it or c imb a tree.
A lady in our office the other day said
that site was a Colquitt “man, 1- because
Colquitt was a pious mau. Her head
is level.
W. C. Stepp Rooms to bo the promi¬
nent caudida'e for sheriff iu White
county, Mr. Stepp will make you a
good sheriff. Step up and vote for
him.
Our summer visitors, we learn, are
soon to leave town, to the great regret
of some of our Whito county gallants,
who, doubtless, exclaim, ‘’tIow(b)ard it
is to part."
Very heavy rains fell here on the
Jirst day of September. The weather
very much resembled the equinox.
If Cleveland could get rid of the one
whisky shop in hor midst, it would be
about the host thing for the peace and
happiness of society that has happened
in a score of years, and a leprous ulcer
would bo healed.
Hon J, J. Kimpey seems to have an
easy going thing in his race for repre¬
sentative, as he has no opponent. Mr.
Jvimsey made us a good representative
once, and wo have no reason to doubt
his making us a better one the next
time,
If you expect to entor the democrat¬
ic house by the door you must pull the
string that raises the latch. Some of
our good friends are pulling at the
wrong string—that one which pulls the
latch down. As long as you pull at
that string you will never enter, unless
by the back door, aud even though you
should enter by that door you will never
feel welcome, neither will you have a
good conscience. Men can be honest in
politics as well as any thing else, and if
they will pull at the right string and
enter by the front door they will nave
an easy conscience, and feel that their
entrance is honorable aud acceptable.
Better not enter at all than by the back
door, through shame and uufair dealing.
Uncle Dick Castleberry went up to
Lumpkin county last week to dig gold,
lie came back last Friday with marks
of tbo week’s work all over his bead.
It seems that be and J. A. Parker
met upon disputed territory and the
latter used a club, long tom. or some
thiDg else upou Uncle Dick's head.
We know nothing about the merits of
the case and we are sorry to learn of
the difficulty between our two old
frieuds and hope they will settle their
differences without farther trouble.— |
6 aimviUe Southron.
If we have to strike a man with any
other thing than our fist, be must be
a younger, larger, and stouter looking :
man than R J. Castleberry.
j LOUDSViLLE CAM P-MBE TIN j. 1
Four miles North of Cleveland,
the summit of a rocky ridge, with
spring of cool refreshing water on two!
sides of it, lies the Loudsville Camp
ground, where for many years an annn- !
id meeting has been held, and where
many people have been bonefitted hy
| religious instruction. The meeting for
tliis year was opened on Wednesday
night, August 25th, wit.li a sermon by
Rev. Robert L. Campbell, of Porter
j | Springs, followed for four days and
nights with sermons by Revs. D. L.
j J. Anderson, J. II. Grogan,CL K. Quillian,
J. Mothvin, 15. W. Allison, J. N
Austin, F. D, Cantrell, Win, Spencer;
W. H. McAfee, and the pastor of the
circuit. The attendance was not very
large, and some interruption happened
on account of the wet weather.
The results of the meeting are somo
sixteen conversion, with six accessions
to the Methodist Church. The com¬
munion was administered on Sunday to
a large number of communicants, when
some seventeen Ministers of the Gospel
surrounded the communion table, The
last night of the meeting was one of
power, and continued until after twelve
o’clock. Many Christians were mado
happy and several persons professed
religion. One of the oldest teut holders
on the ground, Mr. Allison Ledford,
now prostrated by rheumatism, was
brought from his home on a couch iu
order to participate in the meeting.
The communion of the Lord’s supper
was admiuistered to him by the Presid
ing Elder at a late hour on Sunday
night. The order was good, with a
few exceptions. We are glau to record
that respect for religious services is
increasing, and there does r.ot ofteu
happen any very bad behaviour at
these gatherings.
Our visitors from Atlanta, Maj.
Goldsmith and wife, Miss Lizzie Gold
smith aud Miss Alice Howard, left us
Friday morning. We hope they wi'l
come again next summer.

COLQUITT Vs. NORWOOD
(Special to the Telegraph and Monsenger)
Atlanta, August 28 —Colquitt had
a signal success to-.day at Covington
over N'orwoo I, Colquitt recalled the
wonderful stump victories of his famous
father. There never was a more strik¬
ing triumph in a joint discussion. He
took the aggressive and put Norwood
on the defease for his salary grab and
war record. He quoted Norwood’s
Emory College speech with ernsning
effect. Norwood's cold elaboration fell
powerless before Cotquitts magnetism
and ability. The three thousand peos
pie were overwholmiugljr for Colquitt. •

Chicago, August 28.—The following
was received at headquarters to day:
Capt Bell reports that one of Lieu¬
tenant Greshams parties under Ser¬
geant Lawint, of compiny F. Seventh
Cavalry, overtook a hostile paity, killed
one, wounded several and captured six
horses and mules. Gresham's orders
were to scout with a small detachment
the eountry south of Lake Station, and
between Little Missouri and Powder
rivers, Major Merril has not yet re¬
turned from the Yellowstone.
St. Paul, Augusc .‘JO.—About 11
o’clock last night, a youug man named
Robert Barton, fatally stabbed George
Larkin, aged twenty-two. Barton and
his companion had been walking with
two girls, and on leaving them were
joined by Larkin and two other young
men- Larkin mado a remark reflecting
on the character of the girls which
Barton resented, and on its being re
peated, he drew a knife and plunged it
into Larkin’s left breast causing his
death in twenty-live minutes.
Chesteh, August 30.—As a crowd
of men were standing ou the station
platform at Rockdale, abxut seven
miles from here, last night, discussing
politics, ouo of them, believed to be John
Duffy, drew a pistol and fired at, Wil
liam Drake. The ball missed Drake,
but struck Thomas Conner, aged nine¬
teen, behind the oar and killed him in
stantly. Duffy has since given himself
up, claiming that tbo killing was acci¬
dental,
Chicago, August 30.— A careful ex¬
amination of the condition of the wheat
crop in the great wheat belt ou the line
of tbo Northern Pao.fie railroad, has
been made, for the associated press re¬
ports that the crop was in danger in
CODSequeUCO of wet weatlier, were UU- j
warrauted. The late spring delayed '
seeding and harvest fuUy two weeks..
aud last week of cloudy weather inter-,
fered with threshing, but the crop is
safe and with favorable weather, will
begin moving largely this week, fully
three weeks later, hnwev. r, than last
year. The Dalrymple farm alone will
require thirty five cars a day to tako
