for every individual. Kindness, love,

We are sorry to hear that Mr. Allison
Ledford is not improving so much as
he was supposed to be, last week.
There will be no candidate for Gov.
of Georgia after the Gth day of October.
If you wish to help make a governor
you had best not neglect the present
opportunity of voting for Alfred II.
Colquitt; you may be dead before ano
ther opportunity presents itself.
Sabbath. School celebration at Cleve¬
land, Friday btforo the second Sunday
in October—hope everybody friendly to
the cause will be present.
We want everybody and their fr iends
to go the election on the Gr.li day of
October, and vote for Alfred II. Colquitt
for Governor.
Our public schools throughout the
country are prosperous, so far as wo
havo been able to learn.
If Cleveland bad a good school house
and an appropriation of about one thou¬
sand dollars to start her a good sehool,
this county would be greatly benefitted,
and she ought to havo it.
The present corn crop is made, and
an abundance of it in this county, and
the next thing is to take care of it, and
bo suro to keep it out of the still house.
Capt. S. N. Bosworth has sold his
farm near Duke's Creek, and speaks
of locating in Cleveland. Wo would
extend a hearty welcome to the Capt.
and family.
We are pleased to learn that our
friend, Mr. John N. Ash is improving.
He is being treated by Dr. E. F- Starr,
of Nacoochee. We hope soon to see
Mr, Ash again on foot.
DRUNKENNESS
Expels reason, drowns the memory,
defaces beauty, diminishes strength,
inflames the blood, causes interna 1 , ex¬
ternal, and incurable wounds—is a
witch to the 6on8ip, a devil to the soul,
a thief to the purse, the beggars com¬
panion, a wife's woe and children’s
sorrow. He is the picture of a beast,
aud a self murderer, who drinks to
others good health, and robs himself of
his own. S.
A Conscientious Young Man.
There is no moral object so beautiful
to me as a conscientious young man.
I watch bitn as I do a star in the heav¬
ens. Clouds raay he before him, but
we know that his light is behind them
and will beam again. The blaze of
others’ popularity may outshine him,
but we know that, though unseen, he
illumes his own ttue sphere. He resists
temptations, not without a struggle;
but ho does resist and conquers; he
hears thj sarcasm of the profligate, and
it stings him, but he heals the wound
with his own pure touch. He heeds
not the watchword of fashion, if it
leads to sin. Woman is sheltered by
fond arms and loving counsel; old ago
is protected by its experience, and
manbood by its strength; but the young
man stands amid the temptations of the
world like a self-balanced tower. Hap¬
py he who seeks and gains the prop
and shelter of morality. Onward,
onward, then, conscientious youth!
Raise thy standard and nerve thyself
for goodness. If God has given thee
intellectual powei, awaken it in that
cause; never let it be said of thee, he
helped to swell the tide of siu by pour
ing his influence into its channels. If
though art feeble in mental strength,
throw not that drop into a poluted cur¬
rent. Awake, arise, young man! At
sume the beautiful garb ,of virtue. It
is tearfully easy to sin, aud it is difficult
to be pure. Put on thy strength, theu/
