mmmm TITE WEEKLY TELEGRAPH AND MESSENGER, FRIDAY, APRIL 18,1884. FIVE PISTOL SHOTS. A SAD SUICIDE. O».o of the Mott Remarkable Murdere Known In the History of Macon— The Prisoner's Statement- Coroner's Inquest, Etc. Last night, about 8 o'clock, the report was circulated through Macon that Mr. Wo. Landsberg, junior member of the firm of M. Nussbaum <fc Co., wholesale dry goods dealers, nad been shot and killed by J. K. B. panfortb, the eutry clerk of the house. Our reporter hurried to the atore of Nussbaum & Co., comer of Cherry and Third streets, and found quite a crowd of men, many of them endeavoring to peep through the windows of the counting room, into which the dead man had been taken, There was not one among the many congregated around th* build ing notone could be found who knew any thing of the ahooting. The report had gotten out in some mysterious way that five shots had been fired, but no one ven tured any cause for the shooting, or how it od^rred. All that was known was that officer Dan Thomas was called by two men to take charge of Mr. Danfortb. and that the officer took him to the barracks. On going to the barracks our reporter held a conversation with Mr. Dunforth through the bars of the dungeon in which he -had been placed. At first he refused to make any statement, saying that the facts would be brought out by others, and he did not feel inclined to say anything on the subject. He was very apprehensive of being taken out by the friends of the dead man, and the first thing he said was to ask if the people were much excited over the affair. When told that there was no undue excitement, and that the coroner would soon hold hii in quest. he asked quickly with a tremor iu bis voice: “Is he dead ?” After wmis hesitation he said: “If you promise to state this exactly as I tell you, I’ll tell the story, though it is somewhat of a long one.” On being promised, he continued: “I was keeping books for Gus Nussbautu when he sold out in 1882. 1 had the choice of staying with Doody or going with Nuss- bautu. Mr. Landsberg wanted me as en try clerk, but I did not think I could fill Captain George J. Lunsford Ends His Earthly Troubles. Help says he saw what lie supposed to l»e a man drunk or asleep in the corner of the old cemetery next to the compress, and as he ed* so still he ip.iroached and seeing no signs of awaking, he halloed to him. There was no response, and 8Wp went nearer and found the man dead. He then informed Messrs. Walter Johnston and O. P.Willingham, of the Dixie Works, and these gentlemen went to the spot and 1 licked up a letter which in the hut of the lead man. This letter was addressed TO THE roROXKB, and was written in a small hand on both sides of one sheet of common note pa|>er. The writing betrayed no nervousness in the hand of the writer. It read as follows: “Macon, April 15. "Ah. death, the poor man’s sweet friend— with thee. The great, the wealthy fear thy blows— i pomp and pleasure turn: itfon, never having done anything but bookkeeping and 1 declined the place. This was in February. In March 1 filial ly accepted the place, they, Nusabuam & Co., agreeing to keep me eighteen months whether I pleased them or not I went there and received fifty dollaft |»er month. Afterwards my wages were raised to sixty-five dollars, and when Landsberg found out 1 was getting that much he said it was wrong, and that 1 must pay back all over I received. I refuted and this caused him to dislike me and uiuke it very disagreeable. “List summer, when Mr. Nussbaum and Mr. Landsberg were in New York, I wrote to them asking for an increase of salary to $1,000 a year. Mr. Nussbaum sent Lands- berg home to arruugo the salaries for the year. In the wholesale department July Is the year iu which clerks ure hired and salaries fixed. In the retail department September is the month. Well, Lands berg catue back from New York, and he with Mr. Fned of the firm arranged the salaries. 1 saw the slip handed to the bookkeeper, and so did Mr. Tom Rog ers. In Mr. Fried's own handwriting and written with an indelible pencil, was my salary fixed at $1000, and I received my salary at those figures regularly. Lands berg made it very disagreeable for me all aloug, but 1 made up my mind to do every thing he asked me, no matter how unrea sonable it was, and 1 did so uncomplain ingly. But at last he became so overbear ing that the clerks noticed if, and I became frightened lest I slum Id lose my job. I had a mother and sister to support, and I was anxious about it. 1 went to Mr. Nuss baum and asked him if I was giving satisfaction. He told rae as long as 1 attended to my business I was all i This satisfied me and 1 continued on terday morning Mr. Nussbaum and Lands, berg were in the office and both spoke to me about the salary. They said I bad taken a in an advantage of them, and that 1 must receive sixty-five dollars and pay back the difference of a thousand dollars ayear. lbey said a great deal to me which waa very harsh and unjust. This worried me all day and 1 made up my mind what to do. I thought this way about it: I could not support my nu» her and sis. ter on such a salary, and if I quitJLandsberg and Nussbaum would ruin my rep.tation so 1 could not get any other place, so 1 thought 1 would kill Landsberg Af>er aupper I went to the store. He got three a little ahead of me. I had no key. and he let tne in. There waa no on - about hut he and myself. After going in 1 went to the closet and then returned and fired five times. All the shots were fired in the office. Neither one of us spoke s word. Alter 1 fired the last shot he walked out the side door of tfia office to the sidewalk and fell. 1 came out after him and threw my pistol r on the ground, and going up to two men told them to take me to the barracks. They were not policemen, but just then a crowd came running up and with them an officer, who brought me here. If the law wants to execute me for It Ido not care. 1 want the public to know that 1 had a provocation for what 1 did. I was so wrought up that 1 hardly knew what to do and what 1 did I was forfeit to." The prisoner Is 21 years of age, and a a son of the late Oliver Danforth of Ma con. He is kn »wn as Rhodes’ by his friends and bore the reputation of being one of the most quiet young men, and news of his work lost night proves a shock to all who knew him. About half past eight o'clock he was taken in a hack by Lieutenant Wylie and and officer Golden and lodged in jail. WHEN LAST SEEN ALIVE. Capt. Lunstord came to Macon about a week ago, so the registers of the Edgerton and National Hotels show. He hau been living in Atlanta for some time, but re cently made a trip to Florida, anu it was on his return from that State when he stopped in Macon. Our reporter endeav ored to find some one who had seen him Tuesday, that being the dav on which he laid down to sleep for the last time, but was unable to trace him further in the day than 1 o'clock. He was seen on the morning of that day near the court house, talking to Kiel Spark**, tlie court house janitor. Hv was afterward seen by Mr. J. B. Williams And Mr. Wylie Jones of the National Hotel, in front of the Kennesaw restaurant, about 1 o’clock, talking to Mr. Joe Beasly, The two shortly afterward separated, and it was supposed he went down to the old cemetery and swallowed the morphine. WHO HE WAS. Mr. Lunsford was probably the oldest printer in the State. He worked on the 1‘atriot and Statesman in Milledgeville in 1825, and on the Macon Telloeapii at its foundation in November. 1820, and after wards on the Georoia Messenger. He was for ten or twelve year* a conductor on the Southwestern railroad. Many years ago he was married to Miss Matthews, of Macon, who died several years ago, we are informed, in Tennessee. He was an unu sually healthy man, of robust constitu tion, and had more than ordinary intelli gence. For several years after the war he was not engaged in any rraular empoyiuent. About three years ago he went to Carters- ville. and was employed in one of the old printing offices jihero. He assaulted a printer, threatens his life, for which he was confined in jail and sent to the asylum for lunacy a abort t me. tiinfe then he went to Tennessee, where he had two married daughters. About the close of last week he returned to Macon and lodged at the Edgerton Hotel, saying that he had no money, but had secured employment in a printing office at fimithville. and would go tint her in a few days. Hu was kindly treated hv the proprietor of the hotel Hu lett tne Kdgerton and reported at the Nationnl, relating the same story lie told at the Kdgerton.
