Atlanta, August 27.-Many important
matters will come up for consideration at
the next session ot the Legislature. Of
theee none will exceed in gravity those to
be submitted to the finance committee. It
is not to be inferred that the State fa in any
sense financially embarrassed, or to any
way {crippled, but its monetary affairs
will need to he very carefully and wisely
looked after by the next legislature. It Is
therefore of the utmoet importance that
there should be able men of attain in that

On Thursday evening last the Duke of
Edinburgh held a very pleasant birthday
reception on board his flagship, tbe Mlno-

of the squadron were invited. His ltoyal
Highness personally received each guest at
the gangway as he arrived on board.
During the evening tho massed bands of
the squadron, consisting of some eighty
musicians, played a selection of music.
The recently formed string band, with the
Duke of Edinburgh among the first violins,
made their first appearance in public with
a selection from “Patience.” The ship

him if there was anything she could do for
him now that he began to feel better.

speculator who was out there took 800 lots
at *5 apiece, and in thirty days the price
of city lots had gone to *25 each. Home
one built and opened a saloon, and the fig

up, and city lota changed hands at *i5

sell, but he concluded to hang on for a few
more saloons. It was only about a month
ago that tbe snowdrifts melted so that any

Chicago man's agent showed up to find
the place deserted by human beings, but
on a tree was a sign, reading:

If the story told bv tbo captain of tbe
schooner that sunk the Tallapooia is the
true one, the loss ot Secretary Chandler's
favorite dispatch boat may be traced to
the same cause that sank the Ashuelot
in the China sea a few years ago. Nothing
but tbe drunkenness of everybody In
charge of the vessel can account for her
peculiar antics, as described by Captain
lleed. At the same time, it roust be re
membered that Captain Reed is a deeply
interested witness, and that his story dif
fers in some important particulars from
that gathered by the Associated Press
agent. The Associated Press dispatch
says the vessels collided in a thick fog.
Captain Rccd says the night was so clear
that be saw the Tallapoosa’s lights when
two miles away. The executive officer of
the steamer declines to say anything, and
the requirements of his official position
shield nim from any nnfavorable conclu
sions that might be drawn fromhls silence.
The public will have to await the result of
furtherinquiries, and meanwhile may be
thankful that the old and shaky vessel was
disposed of with so little loss of life.

How Many Ties to 100 Feat.

There was addressed to tbe Reghter thle
