ROBBINC THE MAILS. A Missing Chock causes the Arrest of n Route Agent. When Henry Jone9, negro route agent on the Macon and Brunswick railroad, came in Sunday afternoon at 3:30 from his n n and delivered his registers, etc., at the lost-oilice, ho was somewhat startled when confronted by United States Deputy Mar shal T. D. Weld, with a warrant for his ar rest on the charge of robbing the mails. Tue warrant was served in the presence of Chief Rost-officc Inspector S. S. Hartshorn who arrived Sunday morning from Atlan ta. Jones was taken before United States Commissioner Haskins who fixed bond at $1,000. In company with Marshal Weld, the bond was given, being signed by Mr. £. S. McLean and Jones's mother, and be was released. bow rr cams adopt. The facts upon which the warrant was issued are these: W. J. Williams A Co. are dealers .in general merchandise, at Temperance, a little j ItceJ in Telfair coun ty, aud.,twenty-three miles from McRae. The senior member of she firm is the postmaster. On the 19th of July last, tbe firm sent to 8. T. Coleman .fc Co., in pay ment for some good9. a check numbered ompany . ..... the order of J. E. Walker, and properly indorsed by him. Some time after, receiving no acknowl edgment from S. T. Coleman <fc Co., tbe firm at Temperance wrote to them con cerning the check, and received the reply Hint none had been received. This, of conrse, led to some correspondence, dur ing which it was developed that the check was on the Southern Bank at Savannah. Messrs. Coleman A Co., on August 1st, no tified the bank at Savannah of the hots or THE CHECK. On August 23d the check was pre sented at the bank for payment by tbe agent of the Southern Fxpress Company at Savannah. It waa paid, but under pro test, and Coleman A Co. were wired by the cashier. Coleman A Co. notified the agent at Macon and he wired the office at Mem phis to bold tbe money until the rightful ownership could be established. The check had been turned over to the express agent at Memphis, Tenn., for col lection, the proceeds to go to J. K. Smith, care S H. Land, Mississippi and Tennes see railroad depot. The express agent at Memphie was tele graphed to HOLD THE MOTET nntil the ownership conld be established. These facte were reported to Chief In spcctor Hartshorn, at Atlanta, who die- patched Inspector Livingston to Memphis. On Saturday Inspector Hartshorn received a telegram from Livingston to arrest Henry Jones, saying that “his girl had made a deposition.” This telegram brought Inspector Hartshorn to Macon and led to the airest. It seems that in tbe tracing of the check, Inspector Livingston found that a negro woman named Rosa V. Htll bad gone toJ. N. Smith, who was a neighbor, and told him she hsd a check which she could not get cashed, and asked bis advice. He ad vised her to give it to tbe express company for collection, and she then requested that he attend to the matter (or her. The cheek seemed regular, and Smith gave it to tbe express company to return the proceeds to him. When Inspector Livingston found TIIEWOXAK, she said the check had been sent her by Henry Jones, of Georgia, who wrote to her that the check bad been paid him by Eu gene Belcher (deputy revenue collector at Brunswick). Her deposition was then taken and it wilt be brought to Macon by Inspector Livingston to-morrow, when tbe preliminary trial will be bad before COMMISSIONED HAIKIXS. Jones has been a route agent for the past twelve year* and was rated THE CONVENTION YESTERDAY. Proceedings of the Meeting of the Die* trice Executive Committee. Yesterday morning Henry Jones, postal clerk on tbe Macon and Brunswick rail road. appeared before United States Com missioner Haskins for a preliminary bear ing. Tbe case baa been given in detail to tbe public through these columns, and are briefly these: A check indorsed by J. E. Walker was put in the mail by W. J. Wil liams, at Temperance, Ga., directed to S. T. Coleman A Co., of Macon, in payment for goods purchased by W. J. Williams A Co. Tbe check never reached its destina tion, and alter a while was found in posses sion ot the express company, having been turned over to them in Memphis by J. N. Smith and S. H. Land for collection. It was presented to the Southern Bank, in Savannah, by the express agent and paid. The bank notified S. T. Coleman A Co. and they in turn notified the proper United States authorities, and tbe express agefit at Memphis was instructed to hold the money. INSPECTOR LIVINGSTON was detailed to work up the case, and lie proceeded to Memphis and there gained such information aa warranted the arreat of Jones, which was done. Yesterday Jones appeared, with Messrs. W. B. Hill and S. H. Jemison as attorneys. Col. 8. A. Darnell, district attorney, ap peared for the prosecution. Chief Inspector Hartshorn waa aleo present. Both sides announced ready and In spector J. H. Livingston testified as fol lows: "I am post-office inspector in tbe divis ion which includes Georgia. Do not know defendant; never saw him before. On Thursday afternoon, last week, I was at Huntsville, Ala., and was shown a tele gram, whicli bad been received during my absence. I reported to headquarters in Atlanta and was told to wait for IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS. The papers contained a lost check, in dorsed by Walker, and with a lot of corres pondence on the subject, copy of lost draft, etc. [The witness then read the papers, which merely gave the outline of how the check was lost, etc., all of which have been already given.) I left Huntsville Friday night and arrived at Memphis Saturday morning; saw the money clerk of the express office a*d asked him about the money on the draft, and he re plied that he was holding it. he said the parties mentioned in connect :-u with the paying over of tbe proceeds were at work at the M. and T. railroad shops, and were MIN OF GOOD STANDING. I went to the shops and saw S. H. Land and J. X. Smith. Land said Smith knew more about it as be had given the cheek to be collected by theexpress company. I then went to see Bosa Hill and sbe explained to me where she got the draft and bow she “DOVINOLY, OTTIE," are letters received by me from Henry J ones. Ottle is a pet name used by Henry Jones in correspondence with me, unit tbe name I generally received letters signed from Henry. I am positive these letters were from Henry Jones, and I know tbat he uses the signa ture of "Ottle" in correspondence with me. Don't know of Henry Jones using the pet name "Ottie” with any one else, but am positive he uses it with me. Sworn to, etc. After the letters were read, a continu ance to r ten days waa asked for by the government. The defendant then waived examination and gave bond in tbe sum of one thousand dollars for bis appearance at the next term of the United States District got It [ Tbe deposition of Rosa Hill was then handed to defendant's counsel, together with an affidavit of J. X. Smith, a letter purporting to have been written by Jones covering the check, and also a letter written by Jones to another party, which was introduced to prove handwriting. The counsel after consultation decided not to allow the papers to go in AS EVIDENCE, but would not enter objection. The wit ness then proceeded:] On Saturday, when I saw Rosa. I asked for tbe letter which covered tbe draft. Site said she bad it .She had destroyed tbe envelope. Sbe showed tbe letter of August 10. She said •he had a post-office order from Jones, and cave me tbe letter which enclosed that. The letters have been tn roy possession ever since. The opening of tho dry goods house of Lyon and Cline, in the new and handsome building on Cherry street, is looked for ward to with a great deal of interest by the dry goods buying portion of our com munity. The new and special feature to be adopt ed by the house will prove great advan tages to buyers, especially the plain figure feature. This means that all goods in tbe house will be marked with plain fig ures, and these figures will not be deviated front. Thus a child can make aa good pur chases and get as good bargains as its mother or father. Another feature is the cash system. The firm buys for cash and sells for cash. In this way, as every sensible person can see, the customer gets the benefit of such low figures at were never before afforded. The firm, on their visit to Xew York, made all tbe FDRCHASXS FOR CASH, and hence secured tbe cream of the mar kets. Both members are men of long and large experience in their line, and none know better what is wanted for a first-class store. They have secured also a full corps of salesmen. Mr. T. S. The cook in question has a little girl who hat a hankering to run on the streets. The cook has tried every method known to parents and at last hit upon a plan that worked well for a time. Sha made a pair of pants out of a crocus sack and compelled Julia to wear them. Julia waaashtuied to wear pants upon the street, and was thus kept In the yard, to pose as a tort of curiosity. She finally overcame her scruples, and. watching her chance, traded the pants for an apron and kept away from home sev eral days. Yesterday the cook canght the runaway and, placing her in a tack, strung her up to the ceiling, aud there she was. like Ma- hornet's coffin, suspended between heaven and earth. It was tbe only way the cook conld keep her ont of the street. Upon a solemn promise not to go in the street lor a week at least, she was let down Just iu time to keep Iron smothering to death. The street has many attractions for tbe negro child, snd it ie harder work than plowing to keep them from it.
