An Encroaohment Trouble. Some time ago Mr. T. J. Carling made ap plication to the city council for au encroach ment of several feet at the corner of Spring and Columbus streets. The application was referred to the proper committee ami they recommended that It be granted after the com plisr.ee with the usual requires*«&U. At the last meeting of council a commu nication was received from Dr. I>. W. Ham mond. Major C. A. In the meantime Mr. Carling pays the city treasurer the 1100 for the encroachment and takes a receipt therefor, lie then applied to Mayor Corout for the deed who refused because of the objection of Messrs. Ham' mood. Tharpc and Cherry, pending before council. On Monday afternoon the encroach ment committee, of which Alderman Price is tucruacnmeni woura ne a oeinmcm insiean of an improvement. The tower in its fall stmek the cross arms of the telephone pole near the crossing, cut ting the wires as If with a knife. These wires belonged to the telephone company, except nine of the Western Union Telegraph Com pany. As it is. telephonic communication is almost entirely eat off. As soon as the nows of the wreck reaehed the electric light works. Superintendent I Trick*/ repaired at once to the scene and pro ceeded to arrange the wires that the otherl towers might be lighted. When Mr. K. H. Stuart entered his soda-bot tling works early yesterday morning, he saw evidence of a burglarious visit the night be fore. The tools belonging to tho shop had been taken from their accustomed plaee and were found upon the Iron safe. A glance at the safe showed that an attempt had been made to get at Its contents. On tnvestigatlo •, it was found that the buf- K * tr had mauaged by a wire to pull hack the U on the Inside of the door, and in this way entrance was effected. The caps of the bolts in the hinges were then cut off. snd the bolts driven out of their sockets. This failed, bow ever, and the chisel was put to work on the dlsl of the combination, and this failed. Day- made light probably came upon him, aud he his exit unnoticed. | Mr. Stuart at once sent for Mr. George B. iWells, who had aeveral valuable papera aud some money In tho aafe, and it waa a question with them whether the thief hail succeeded in getting into tho safe and replaced the door or had failed to get In. They went to work to open the aafe, but It restated their efforts, the combination refusing to work. After consid erable trouble, the safe was opened and the Mr. Wells is quite certain that he will lie able to catch up with the safe-breaker, though It may require some time. Another Remarkable Man. We mentioned the other day how Rev. Wesley Smith, of Forsyth, was a wonderful man.|but we have one now, Mr. T. W. Barrow, who lives near Bollngbroke. who is somewhat ahead of Mr. Smith.
