THE WEKKLYTKLEGRAPII AND MESSENGER, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 1884. Came Protection. Editor* Tklkuiufh and Mkmknoer: The counties of Bibb, Jones, and many others of this State, have local game laws. Each coun ty enacts Its own laws when its representa tives can secure the co-operation of the Legis lature. There seems to be an utter disregard for the law on the part of most s|tortsroen (7) who enter the fields In August and September, frequently killing the parent birds and caus ing the young to die. The game of a county or Plate belongs to that county or State, and as the law forbids the killing of that game, ex cept in the open season, the party who violates the law is a thief, "venison thief, turkey thief, or quail thief,” as the case maybe, and as such they are now styled by all true sportsmen. Our open season ou doves is from August 1 to April!. This should be July IMo April 1. Open Heason on quail October 1 to April 1. All parties violating aame should be reported to the solicitor and prosecuted to the extent Of the law. Restaurateurs who sdvertise quail or wild turkey for lunch, or otherwise, when not in the open season, are equally as guilty as those who kill them, and should be forced to observe the law. Those of us who appreciate what little game we have must awake to the necessity of i serving It. and tho day will soon come w 1 the supply will l»e exhausted unless proi action Is taken. Let “pot hunters and game thieves” be forced to abandon their nefarious practices and In a few years we will have a largely increased supply. The present condi tion of the Macon Sportsman's Club U such as will prove of Incalculable benefit to our game protective agencies, if they will promptly take hold of the matter. We aro heartily in sym pathy with the keeping up this association of gentlemen, and feel assured that the cncour- agement of out door sports w ill prove'of great mental and physical benefit to all who partic ipate. Oct the farmers to cooperate with the association; post their lauds (as many of them or^ doing); always shoot over a man’s fields wffc. his consent; be satisfied with a well- filled bag. a dozen brace or so; share your game with your farmer friend, and you will never fall to rceurf the eonseptbf s gentians?. 'Oot over his preserves. wHto the above with the hope that a Correspondence. Forsyth, Ga., September 20tli, 1*M. Hon. Thos. B. Gathering of Contractors—Bids for the New CnpitolscEdbrooke Sanguine —Burglarious— Notes and Pereonal Mention. fSPECIAL CORRESPONDENCE.) Atlanta, September 24.—Mr. Edbrooke, the new capitol architect, arrived in the city on the morning train. He is quite sanguine as to the result of the session of the Capitol Commission this afternoon, and has no doubt that the contracts will be awarded without further delay. It ia known that bids will be put In by five different responsible parties for the whole work, and that the figures are clearly within the appropriation. There will be a large nnraber of other bids, which will be opened at 4 o'clock this afternoon. M it looks as though the city is full of con tractors, who are evidently a representa tive lot of men from all sections of the country. There Is little diminution in the bur- glaries in Atlanta. A gentleman in my ne : ghbarbood last night trkd the expert merit of firearms, but not with entire suc cess as he failed to bring anything down. His failure, however, is not an argument against thjl remedy. An ex-judge of the Superior Court, in spcaki .gof the increase of yds class of offenses here, gave me the opinion that it is largely due to three causes—the negro population, the facili ties for escape, growing oqt of the number of railroads running out of Atlanta, and a police force not large enough for the city. He added, too, that the laws are not as stringently enforced as they ahould be, Holton Items.* The village has been enlivened lately by pleasant boarders at two of the residences and by visitors from adjacent counties. The need of rain is severely felt. Cotton has been cut off at least one-third. There is no “top crop.” Peas, potatoes, turnips and the secqnd crop of bermnda hay are all great ly injured. The corn crop has turned out very finely, hogs are cheap, cattle keep fat and the people are blessed with good health. Mr. William G. Bass has bought a valuable trart of land from Mr. R. K. Bowman, and will begin to erect stables, barn, out-houses, etc.. Immediately. Col. My rick Intends to entirely remodel his hospitable old home, and modernize It. Miss H. A. Johnson offers her desirable place with a large residence of eight or ten rooms for rent or lease, on very low terms. K. K. Park has two small farms and houses to rent, and the McWilliams' place of 436 acres is for sale on long time. Mr. W. J. McAfee and family, of Macon, moves to Holton this week, and will be very weloome citizens. Mlaa Florence Cater, of Perry, Is visiting Mi«s Mattie Bowman. The arrival of three beautiful Imported Shetland ionics at tho "Holton Stock farm," has created a sensation among the children. They ark gentle, amlablo and attractive Itttlc animals. There bad been some sharp words be- tween Welch and Skipper previous to this meeting. The quarrel was renewed and*when W elch threatened to whip Skipper he matle a mark on the ground and dared Welch to cross it Welch took the gun away from Nash who was holding It, and approach ing Shipper placed the gun at hU breast.
