THE TELEGRAPH AND MESSENGER, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 5, 1884. A CAR-FARE ROMANCE. The Counterfeit Nickel which was SO Denr to a Tramp. Omaha Herald. “I-want a beer, end I don't want it," said a terdy-looking fellow to a barki-nper in a Mint. 1 Dodge street saloon last night. * Here'a the last nickel I’ve got In the world, bnt that isn't why I hate to give it iip. That nickel ruined me." •'It did I" queried the barkeeper incredu lously. es, it did; or rather a girl that owned it did. Don't ask me what her name was, 1 never knew. It * ft) three > ears ago, and 1 had a forty-five dollar job In one of the railway offices. One day I met this girl In a red-line street car—a glorious be ing she was, and I was dead gone the min ute I saw her. When she passed up her faro I was so nervous that I dropped the nickel, for her finger tips touched mine and a big thrill slid all the way up to the end of my hair and nearly raised my-h it off. I made some apology for my clumsi ness, which gave me a chance to hear her ape< k. Then 1 fished up this nidtel from the floor, but slyly kept it myself and nc in one of my own. Well. I wa'cbed t!m girl as far as 1 could see her, and 1 didu . know enough lo get off ths car until it reached the stables. Every day alter that I spent all the time 1 could get in riding up and down in ihe red line ears, but I never saw her again. Pretty Boon I was bounced from my job for being absent-minded and making rate takes. I didn’t care until Hound I was -half starved. Then I got reckless and V-dned a circus. When the season was over I tramped It. I’m tramping still. Well/' with a s’gh, "give us a beer nickel." Afier he bad emptied the glass and gone out a bystander asked the barkeeper to let him see that histone co n. A tccond glance showed that it was a counterfeit. "I wonder," said the barkeeper slowly, MADAME HUCUES'8 PISTOL. Public 8>mpnthy for tho Lady Who 8hot Her Traducer. Paris, November 20.—Public sympathy for Madame Hogues, who shot her tra ducer day before yesterday, is intensified by the feet that both M. Hogues and his wife devotedly nnreed the sufferers from cholera during the prevalence of the epi demic at Mtrsaillea. M. Paul de Casssgnac, editor of Le Pays, considers the lady a heroine, and urges the entire press to uphold her. M. Hogues says his wife proposes to partake of a "lovers’ break font’' before going to the court. She was in excellent spirits during the meal. Before leaving her home abe prepared a bundle of clothes for use dur ing* her stay in prison. She has asked the prl*on author idea that aho may be nro- "what sort of a girl that was—or did he lie?" I Standard Time. Popular Science Monthly. The adoption of a new standard required a simultaneous change to be nude in the clocks and the watches of employes upon nearly every railroad in the United States and Canada, the change varyP g from oue minute and three siconds on the Pennsyl vania railroad to forty-five minutes on the Intercolonial railway of Canada. The ex ceptions were two roads in the vicinity of Denver. The chur.ee was also slight for some of the St. Louis rosds. T ho Interro- Jonial railway adopted the time of (lie m.v enty-fifth meridian as a nutter of con venience, instead of that of '* sixtieth meiidian. to which location Would have properly signed it. So perfect were the prepi lions that not a single accident at any point is recorded as having been caused by tho change. On Ihe day when the new standards took effect, the clocks of about 20,GGO railway stations and the watches of about30(4000 railway employes were rite 1 . Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of city and town clocks were altered to conform. How many individuals re*et their w atches it is impot&ible to compote, but they could cer tainly be reckoned by millions. Probably no such singular incident has cvr r before happened or is likely to occur again. At the present time, from the Atlantic ocean at the eastern extunmy of New Brunswick to tbe Pacific coast at Oregon, the minute hands of the railway clocks ad watches Indicate the same minute of time at all bears, and fully 50,COO 000 people regulate iheir business affairs by standard time. While a few and for the most part unimportant communities, and some railway companies, did not make the change immediately, so large a majority adopted the sjatem on No vember 18, 1883, that that date may be fairly .taken as the one upon which tbe reform took effect Several New England railroads, tbe Central Vermont railroad being »h© most important, commenced to nm their trains dv "Eastern" standard time on October 7,1883. The Central and Bouthern Pacific railroads west of Ogden snd Demins, tnd their branch lines, are tho only railroads in the United States or Canada which do not now use standard lime, if we except two partly local roads Jn Pennsylvania, aggregating Jess than in Pennsylvania, aggregating Jess than twenty miles In length. The lost to adopt the system were tbe Union Pacific r»ilw«- gpd th* City of Omaha, on May 1, fafci* vided with material for modeling in clay. M. Clovis-Hugues, n> an interview to day expressed confidence that his wife will ta triumphantly acquitted of any crime by the court. Mine. Hiigues has a daily re ception at St. Lazaire Preson. Hundreds of cards from rat-rubers of all political sec tions iu Pari.i and a large number of fi *ral offerings have been sent to her. Her two young daughters have also been permitted,, to visit her. M. Ungues Mates that his wife kept him in ignorance of the cause of tho tragedy as t-Le was absent from her home, telling hiui that she was preparing a bust for the Baiun. • Washington** Quarrel With Poyi e. Cleveland Leader. "It wns in that area, ’ said Mr. Brocket, the white whisk*red auditor o( Alexan dria, *‘in which Washing oq had his quar rel with Lieut. Payne." Wo were standing at a window on the second flror of the market-house and looking down into the gteat open court which it surrounds. The court is fi-Jed with hundreds of little wooden booths where the fanners bring iheir produce and display it for sale on every market day. The uie it stalls arc in the building itself, but the whole comparatively recent date, and In Wash ington’* time tbe place was an opeu mar ket apace. "The cause of the trouble," continued Mr. Brocket, "was political. There was a contest for the Virginia Assembly, and Payne held one political theory, while Washington held another. Payne war himself a candidate for the Legisla ture against Fairfax, of Alexandria. Washington supported Fairfax, and when lie n:ei Payne he had a hot political dis cussion with him on the spot which you see Just below you. Payne considered himself inst Ited by one of Washing ton's remarks, and knocked hi.n down. The moment the assault was over the story went like lightning through the town that Colonel Washington was killed, and his troops wh > weie sta tioned with him at Alexandria at tbe time, rushed in. They would have made si ort work of Payne if Washington bad not pre vented them, and, poiniing to his black eye, told them that it was hts affair and he understood how to manage it. Thee thought this meant a (b el, and the t ext day the town waa on tin qtii vive in regard to the affair. Tbe following morning Payne got a note frem Washington ask ing him to come to tbe hotel. Payne, expecting a duel, did so, bnt he found Washington, with his bead tied up. in an amicable mood. He said as Payne enterred, and I doubt not he had his words cut and dried before-band: "Mr. Payne.toerrUhuman; I was wrong yts'erday, but if you have had sufficient ta isfactlon, let us be friends." 'Iher* was a decantur of wine and two glasses on the table, which Wash ington had order-d to smooth over the trouble. The two pledged each other to new friendship over this, and history re lates that they continued strong friends to the day of Washington's death. Colonel Pavne was one of the pall-bea ers at Washington's fin.era!. Cleveland Accepts nn Invitation. Naw York, November 29.—Governor Cleveland waa waited upon in Albany by a delegation from the Actor's Fand Society to-day and invited to attend the annual G rform&nce for the benefit ot tbe fund, to given at the Academy of Music next Thursday afternoon. The Governor re plied that he bad been compelled to de cline many invitations, but he appreciated the always ready generosity of actors when other people were iu trouble, and, aa this was the only charity the actors bad for themselves, be would accept tbe invitation.
