fBE 'I ELEGRAPH AND MESSENGER: I RID AY, JANUARY 30. 1685.
A HORRIBLE FATE.
Th« Tragic End of Mr. Thomas Scalding,
of McIntosh County.
•‘There Is a dead man at the city balL M
Tho above words passed from month to
xnouth at an early hour yesterday morning
and soon attracted a Urge crowd to the point
Indicated.
•Stretched upon some scattered hay In the
ante room at the city barracks, surrounded by
a curious throng, was the pale and ghastly
corpse of a young white man. His clothing
was plain, but substantial, and his appearance
generally was Indicative of no ordinary sUtion
In life. As he lay outstretched his form
weltered In blood, and his neck and shoulder
revealed a sickening spectacle. The sight was
nothing more nor less than a body almost
completely decapitated, and the right shoulder
and aim crushed out of all shape.
Dr. Walker, tho city physician, assisted by
Coroner Bodnett and others, were making an
examination of the body and removing what
clTccU there were to be found upon it.
Whilo this was going on the crowd
was busy attempting to discover who the un
fortunate was, »nd the patticuUrsoi hla h r
rible fate. Every man had a theory of h s
own to advance, and each development, as it
was i roducixi, was caught and eagerly de
voured by the morbid curiosity of the by-
was soon learned that the dead man had
KILLER IlY A LOCOMOTIVE,
pand that the accident had occurred only a few
Vaours previously.
Mr. James P. Chapman, the night watchman
at the barncks. was sought, and said: “1 know
nothing, only that he was brought here about
4 o'clock this morning by officer Drew and
Coroner Hoduett. Hla body was on a dray
when it arrived here, and was accompanied
by the two officers. Thereia Mr McAfee; per
haps he can tell you more.”
The gentleman referred to was tented before
the stove in the office, and in response to our
inquiries said:
•*I was the engineer that ran the locomotive
over his body. My fireman’s name is Mr. Jeff
Dodson. The accident occurred this morning
about 1:80 o’clock in the neighborhood of the
old Rock If ill, nearly opposite the gate of the
Central yards. My engtue Is No. M. and last
night pulled In freight train No. 12 between
Smithville and lfacon. When we arrived in
the city and bad arranged the cars. Idid some
drilling preparatory to running my engke in
tho yard for the night, and badabout|finished.
As iscusb mary I bad carried the engine and
tender nearly to the river bridge, tnd having
•witched on to the ipain track, was barkiug
tho locomotive towards the shops. When
near the rock warehouse I noticed that the
rear trucks of the tender jumped, and the
thought Immediately occured to me that we
had run over semething. My fireman thought
as 1 did. and was of the opinion that it was a
piece of wood. When the engine had gone
twelve or fifteen feet further, far enough in
fact for the rays of the headlight to stream
upon the track, I noticed the body of a man
lying crosswise, bis head Just insl 'e the rails.
We applied the brakes and went back to him
to tee what was Ihe matter. When 1 got there
1 saw that hla head had been nearly cut off,
and his right shoulder badly crushtd. 1 felt
the pulse, and as I did he gave his last
gasp. I left the engine and sought annlicc-
miui, who had the body removed. 1?’
could not be found anywhere.”
A coroner’s Jury was impaneled, and
quest hell over the remains. Engineer
McAflee, fireman Dodson and Dr. Walker tes
tified. The evidence given In by the first two
* gentlemen was aubstantlally the same as told
ns by Mr. McAffee. Dr. Walker testified, after
a medical examination, that the “deceased
came to hla death by a wound In the neck.”
After all the testimony bad been taken, the
jury retired and

Upon the body of the dead man. which was
Identified as Thomas Spalding, of
McIntosh county, was found among
other things the following ar
ticles: Two letter*, addressed one to Mr.
Thomas Spalding, Doboy, Georgia, the other
to Mr Thomas Spalding. MUlcdgevillc, Geor
gia. The latter was re-addreued »o Athens, in
care of Judge Howell Cobb. The first was
pott-marked Syllsfork, Ga., January 10th,
the otter bore the post-mark date January 21st,
18 5. One of the letters was i rgiug hie* to re
turn home at an c^rly day. the other was upon
bu dnesa connected with the sale of some land
on Sapclo Island, in which he and his family
were largely Interested. Both were signed by
hia slater, Nelly Spalding, and were of a very
affectionate nature. Also, letters from Samuel
W. Goode, real estate and loan broker, Atlan
ta, memorandum bo>k, Telegraph and Mrs-
wwqes Januar. ;4tb, deed from D. B Blouut,
a description of a tract of land, certificates as
metal pilot on steamer Ogeechee between
Darien and 8ipelo, mortgage fl fa. for 11,763.78,
a pilot's oath, a pipe and package of tobacco, a
watch and chain, a gold ring and a bottle la

found Including $1.30 In money. They were

Tbe rest easily suggests liself and may be
summed as follows: The accident occurred,
according to Engineer McAfee’s account,
about 1:*) o'clock. The traiu from Atlanta,
on which he arrived, reaches here at
11:45 o’clock. Fully twenty minute*
are consumed in tranaferlng baggage and ex
press matter. Tho supposition, then, would
U that he waa on the river bridge working
ms way back to the city about 12:30 o clock,
allowing reasonable time for the train to
reach that point. The return was tedious, as
ho didn’t know the way. and a portion of the
track consists of trestle work. It would not be
unreasonable to allow th* t an hour was con
sumed in tho efl'ort to find a way
by which to return. Being
on ’the main track at the time be waa put off,
he naturally followed it, which brought him,
at tbe expiration of an hour. In tho neigh
borhood of the spot where the accident oc
curred.
The (above is reasonable and satisfactory,
and aflords a lucid explanation to what has
heretofore been a perplexing mystery. Con
ductor Young took occasion to remark, that
if ho had found Mr. Spalding under the
influence of whisky he would not, as a friend,
have put him off at the bridge.
In conclusion, we cheerfully give place to
tbe following card from Mr. T. I>. Timely:

Tbe package of brandy referred to was not a

Glenn parted with him at the Brown House
about an hour before his death, when he left
to catch th9 train upon which hia valbewas

to the fact that at that time he was perfectly
