■Collapse of the Water Works-Notice to
to the ' Fire Department—What
Ought to be Done—* Drug War
and Probable Result—Raid
on the N. O. Exposition.
larlCIAL OOBRISPOMDENCI.l
Atlanta, January 31.—The Atlanta wa
terworks system has practically yielded
up the ghost. It has always been an In
valid, a very expensive one at that, but it
died hard. Tho superintendent has noti
fied the chief of the lire department that
he ne< d not depend on the water works in
case of fire. That means if there is a fire
in the business or residence portion of the
city there will be no water from that source
available to extinguish it. This is really
sso news to the people of Atlanta, bat it is
valuable as an official acknowledgment of
the utter Inefficiency of the system. What
is to be done? Atlanta is too large a city,
its property too valuable to be left a day
without an adequate lire service. There
ought to be an immediate step taken to se
cure an abundant supply of water and suf
ficient force to make it available for the
fire department. It has never been satis
factorily explained why the city authort-
tici, in the face of this very defective water
supply, refused to accept the proposition
m made a year ago by responsible parties to
dig the long-talked of canal from the Chat-
tahooche without a dollar’s cost to the city.
It looks as though nothing was then In the
way of giving to Atlanta one of the finest
systems of waterworks in the world, and
beside a water power which of necessity
mnst have made her a great manufactur
ing center. It would have been well to ac
cept so liberal a proposition as that, or at
least to have made arrangements the,
would have remedied.
Notwithstanding this collapse of the wa
terworks the public will still have a limit
ed supply of this exquisite mud and water
fordrinklng,cooking and bathing purposes.
Thia will prove a great consolation. Intbe
meantime a much greater responsibility
Testa upon Col. Baum than aver before.
The people of a Urge city will now watch
and oount with a breathlets anxiety and
and a growing in erase each stroke of the
ponderous beam that is driving the drill
.to the yet nnfathomed depth where the
free nntrmod artesian current rushes
through the bowels of the earth. If Colo-
net Baum strikes it, as he is positive of
doing, it will go tar toward the solution of
the water problem. If be fall, it ia a sad
probability that Atlanta will go dry, with
oceans o( whisky and beer in sight. It U
devoutlr to he wished that such calamity
may not befall ns.
CHILD MUIIDBB,
Uncle Dick Heynes, the new coroner of
Fulton county, is beginning to make bis
noord for 1883. He scored a fresh mark
to-day. At tbs corner of Magazine and
Davis streets, this morning, a young negro
woman named Julia Whitfield, who came
here a short while ago from LaGrange,
gave birth to a child and threw ft into a
well on the premfroi. A doctor had been
called in to tee the woman, and when he
came hs asked for the chili, which was
nowhere to be seen. Upon being
pressed the woman confessed that
aha had thrown it in the well. Looking
down into the well the dead infant waa
teen floating on the surface of the water.
A policeman and the coroner were sum-
moned. The child waa drawn up from the
well and an Inquest held, which reaulted
in * verdict that the mother had commit
ted infanticide. A warrant waa sworn oat
against her for murder, and she is now un
der arrest. The affair and the inquest
brought together about the bouse a multi-
tirade of negroes.

THE BOSS PLOW.
YVc now offer to the Planters nnd dealers of Georgia tho host Turning Plow
ever sold in the State.
YVc have taken the pains to have them tested before advertising them, and
the results fully justify our broad assertion above.
It is the cheapest because it is the best mmlo and costa less to keep up than
any other cost plow.
It ia better because it will do work that other plows will not. It saves your
mules because it is of a lighter draft. The above is what wo claim for it and we
havo already many certificates from gentlemen who have tried them who have
cheerfully given us their unqualified indorsement.
Mr. Ilenry Fcagin, of Houston, says it is by big odds the best Plow he ever
w.
Mr. Joseph Y’inson says it will do work whero his other plows will choke,
and he likes it better than anything he has ever tried.
YVe have heard of several gentlemen trying to dispose of their plows to
get The Boss, because they are so much cheaper to keep up. If the merchants
yon deal with haven't got thorn for sate write to us ior them.
