Great excitement was occasioned here
today by the riotous conduct of a large
number of unemployed workmen. Three
thousand ol them paraded tbe streets with
banners bearing mottoes of tbelr griev
ance# Several binds of music accom-
pinltd the procession, which marched to

nvernment board. A committee from tbe
nnks entered tbe office and demanded
relief for the people they repreeented.
They wanted Immediate employment In
ths construction of municipal works, which

The officiate of the board repulsed the

lha distinguished Georgia farmer, died

at 11 o'clock this morning.

Mr. Dixon was about 75 ytara years old
ot large and well-proportioned body,

aud moat widely-known citizen ol thla
county. Its waa regarded as a model
farmer, and his loss to tba farming people

Washington, February 17.—To-day’slel
egrama report a railroad blockade in tbe
East alincut as complete and effective as in
Ilia West. Alt trains on tbe Rome, Water-
town and Ogdenaburg railroad, iu north
ern New York, were abandoned yesterday,
and tour trains stack in drifts yesterday
still remain there, A number of trains
were stuck in drifts or held at small way
stations tn Vermont and Near Hampshire.
Travel on Ibe New York Central was much
Impeded. Tbe same was the case with
the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western,
both tn New York and Pennsylvania. Tbe
Grand Trunk is blockaded at several points
In Canada, both east aud west, aud some
trains are In snowdrift*. No interruption
tun yet occurred on tbe main line of
either tbe Pennsy Irani > or Bat'more and
Onto roads, but else where in New England.
New York and Pennsylvania scarcely a
railroad exi ts which nas not suffered to

Chicago, February 17.—The" weather In
Chicago has moderated somewhat. At 8

In Dakota and Manitoba tbe mercury
stiff ranges from twenty to thirty below,
and no Immediate relief can be expected.
The worst effects of the storm are Hill felt
south and southeast of Chicago. Freight
traffic is quite generally su-pendeff. East
bonnd pss-enger train* on all rose a except
the Grand Trunk are moving, though de
layed. Iucomirg trains are from
one to three hours ltte. Tbe

Sunday. The Pou-Hendle, Chisago and

bany and Chicago roada are still arrowed
up. Tbe Illinois Central trains are several

trains are all dtiayed. The SL Paul and
Northwestern trains are going out on time,
but in-coming trains were from one to
three hours late.

despite the fact that tbe carnival festiv
