MB 01 1 THR TELEGRAPH AND MESSENGER: FRIDAY, MARC I 20,1885. THE STRIKE ENDED. An Amicable Settlement Arranged Be- tween the Authorities end the Brotherhood. The trouble* that have existed for the pa*t low day* between the authorities ot the Eut Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia railioad and the Brotherhood engineer* employed by the road were happily settled yesterday, and the strike ended. This morning the trains that have been side-backed will move out as usual, and the affair* of the road resumed where they were interrupted, with a better feeling than over existing between employers and em ployes. It was understood in the city early yesterday morning that Grand Chief Engineer Arthur, of Cleveland, Ohio, had arrived in the city, and would assume direction of matters for the Brotherhood. he was quarte: that ha was engaged 3nan of the Brotherhood. In the afternoon it was currently rumored that a satisfactory settlement of all differences had been arranged, and that the strikers would resume work th'a morning. Ur. Arthur was sought at the Kdgerton without success. The reporter was informed that he had quit the boti-1 only a few mo menta before, and had gone to seek Superin tendent Fry, at the East Tennessee's bead- quarters, ft was learued that he had been in consultation with the men of the Brotherhood during the entire morning and had advised with them to the time he left the hotel at 2 o’clock. Air. Arthur was sought at the headquarters ► of the road and found In conversation with Superintendent Fry In reply to questions he stated with a pleasant smile that everything had been most harmoniously arranged, and that no further trouble would ensue. He said: ”1 arrived this morning, and hare beeu closeted with the Brotherhood all day, hear ing patiently all their statements. I find that the entire affair baa been the result of«a mistake—a misunderstanding on the part of tho men. You know we all make mistakes A LILLIPUTIAN SAMSON. A Specimen of What Can be Done by Mr*. Mrs. Dixie Haygood. of lfUledgevllle, who has recently given exhibitions of her wonder ful power, which is similar to that of Miss Hurst, was in the city last night on her way to Foft Valley, where aho appears to-night. Hearing of her presence in the city, a Tele- graph man sought her at the residence cf Mr. Willie Cornell, on New street. She is quite a small lady, weighing ninety- four pounds. She has a sweet face which Is bangless, and carries a pleasant smile. In complisuce with the request to give the re porter a specimen of her wonderful power, she went into the hallway, and took a position back of an ordinary chair. Mr. Roland B. Heruucle, Dr. David Clopton, well known throuch the South, then advised her to give exhibitions to the public, but she sbrsuk from it. and it was not until receutlvihat she decided to let the world see any of her marvelous power. Mr. Arthur was found to be a most pleasant gentleman, of fine address, and of a keen, discriminating mind. As grand chief engineer of the United States, Mexico and Canada, ho occupies an exalted position and commands a Urge salary. His action in adjusting the troubles of this division of the Brotherhood is regarded as manly and sensi ble, and.won for him a high Indorsement from all classes. He returned to C eveland last night. superintendent Fr? was next seen iu his office. His face beamed with a genial expres sion, and told plainly the happiness he felt over tho turn things had taken. In reply to our question, "Have you any news for the TELEGRApn this afternoon?” be said; *T have lust finished a most pleasant chat with Chief Engineer Arthur, who called upon me to pay me a social call. The troubles that have been exiting have all been arrange 1. 1 was waited on thU mornltg by a committee of five, who came as Brotherhood men and old employes of the road, to say that they had act ed hastily and wanted to be taken back. I re peated to them the poaltion I bad already as sumed In the matter, but told them I would (•store as m ny of them as had not acted un becomingly In this matter, and as could be re instated. 1 could not take back all, as I had telegraphed to Lynchburg, Va., for nine engineers, and they were ou tho way. Notice would be given them at once that they were not needed, and probably some would prefer to return. Those that did come would have to be given work. The vacancies then left would do filled by those who were deserving. Tho committee seemed pleased, and said they would go to their homes, stand ready to be called out, and whatever 1 did would be ac cepted as satisfactory. The past was buried, and wo agreed to forget 1L 1 think it will re- ault favorably. The men in the future, if they have any wronga to be righted, will under stand Later bow to go about it, and will not be disposed to seek indirectly.” Mr. J F. Porter, who has been directing the Brotherhood’s affairs before the arrival of Chief Engineer Arthur, said yesterday after noon: "I would be glad for you to state, in justice to me, that the division pasted a reso lution this morning exonerating me entirely, and attaching no censure to me either for my conduct in the past, or its effect in the future. The resolution was offered by the chief en gineer himself when I tendered my resigna tion as chattmau of the committee on griev ances, and waa pasted unanimously.” “paraonnl Magnetism." Tom Burney came in Saturday night and rc lated the following for a fact: The other day Min Lulu Hurst was on Con ductor Allie Bbellman'a train and on the train was.a man who had attendedlfias Lulu's per formanco In Eufaula the night before, and who was exceedingly skeptical. Beaeldhe was satisfied that the secret ol her performances iraa simply muscuUr power and that she was fortunate enough to poiiMI Z HIM® more muscular strength than an ordinary mao. As none of his fellow passengers were able to give any lucid explanation of the wonderful Georgia girl • powers, the Eufaula m*u had the t*cst of t e argument until Con <nctor Shellman came along. How Griffin waa Stabbed. Brief mention was made yesterday morning of the stabbing of Henry Grifflo, cotton asm pier for Wood Bros., Sixth street, by another negro. Owing to tire lateness of the hour at which the information was received, it was impossible to leArn the particulars. We give them this morning: Griflln had been in the habit of receiving his meals from bis little boy, who brought them to tho warehouse every day. Tuesday when the boy camo with his dinner, a dog owned by a train haud named "Griff" sprang upon him and came near biting him seriously. The boy cried for help and Griflln ran out and brat oil the dog. 'V then tried to kill nim with a rock, but iUsed his aim and the dog escaped. In the afternoon latn "Griff", tne train hand, came to tho warehouse and inquired for Urlf- tin. The Utter went out to see him, not know ing who "Griff” was. Griflln waa a»kel why he struck the dog. and when he told him the reason, the negro train hand plunged a knife blade in his left arm. The full force of the stab was averted by Griflln, who saw It coming in time to grasp nls assailant by the wrist. Tho two then clinched and a scuffle ensued, in which both tripped and fell with Griflln on top. At this point • Griff's” wife ran up, aud was about to beat Grlfllti when Mr. Wood camo out of the warehouse aud ■topped the fuss. Grinin’s stab Is a deep and painful one b* . not a very serious one. A doctor attended his wooed, and yesterlay he was able to be about. A Horrible Accident.
