Near Elberton Monday Alford Clark,
colored, struck Wm. Dubose, colored, on
the head, with a fence rail, crushing in
his skull, and making his death almost
certain. They had quarreled. Clark has

She Took Her Malden Name.
Mrs. WiUieJofns, wlfeof Mr. J. H. Joins,

The good ladies of Jacksoo, In Batts
connty. recently gave a festival or dinner
to raise funds with which they could pay
off a debt of the Methodist church at that
place. As a large cake was about to be
rattled, the wife ot the pastor. Rev. Mr.
Johnson, appeared npon the scene and
laid her husband objected to the cake being
raffle!. Tbe gentlemen, desiring to con
form to the pastor's wishes and to make
the venture of the ladles asnccess, chipped
to twenty-five cents each and purchased
tbe cake outright. Then they drew straws

the lnckv holder. He left the cake to be
sent to the pastor next day.

have doted a contract with the New York
•genta of the merchants of Aaplnwall, for
furnUhtng a large amount ot lumber for
the rebuilding of that city, which was de

contract provides for tbe delivery ot 75.000
to 100000 feet of lumbar par day, a large
portion of which Is to b© drestad and fin
ished. The steamship Danish Monarch,
which la now discharging sugar at Phila
delphia, has been chartered to carry this
timber.
