Them arebigger bunardiln Penmylva- nta to an Aba Bernard, and they rooat lnaide the city limits, too. Paul Botto» will have t J be employed to awim out and attach a couple of blad- dera to the Dolphin. Funny. This ittddcn ebullition In regard to Bryant may fool gome peoplo outside of the State in regard to the virtuous indignation of some Georgians, bntit will be regarded hero as altogether funny in place of being serious. Of course Bryant ought to go, but how comes it that Bryant is in apoeition to render this either pleasant or neces sary ? A Washington special says: Gen. John B. Gordon, of Georgia. called on the Attorney-General to-day, and protected in the name of the good character o! the State of Georgiaegelnattbe longer retentiontnoffice ot United States Marsha! Bryant. He declared that Bryant was not only offcniive a, a parti san, but ai a man. and that hla removal from plfte waa demanded by the people whom he had on the etump end elaewhere traduced. What is the sudden necessity of im porting a citizen of New York to Washington, to bulldoze the tardy Attorney-General as to Bryant’s walk ing papers? Bryant is no more offen sive to the honest and respectable peo ple -of Georgia now than on the first day of his arrival. One tithe of the fuss now being made could have kept him out of the oflice he now enjoys. The Senators from Alabama prevented a fellow just like Bryant from being ap pointed marshal in that State. Is it not funny that neither Brown nor Colquitt complained of this horrible man when he was appointed? And is it not strange that Col. Crenshaw's deputies cannot get along with Bry ant’s deputies, and yet harmonize with Marshal Wade’s deputies? The lino between the two districts in Georgia is an imaginary one. Only the other day and there was published in these columns proof of the infamy of one of Marshal Wade’s deputies, and yet Colonel Crenshaw's deputies can get along with such, but cannot stand Bryant’s deputies. Such stuff as this cannot deceive sen sible men. The people who put Bryant in for n purpose have used him and now desire to put him out. Nobody objects to this movement; the objection lies against the published motive. What reason cals out in the States of Ohio and Vir ginia, and laying down the formula by which their successors aro to he put in. As the same process will probably be applied to Georgia, our Representatives and parties desiring post-oflicea can read and go to work. The fact that a man holds a commis sion from a Republican President, should not only be prima jacit, but conclusive proofs of “offensive parti sanship” at the Sontb. The Sonny South saye: “We are pleased to know that President Cleveland has too high an appreciation of the responsibilities resting npon him in hla new position to pley the big elepbeot in public paradea yet awhile. The Commercial convention will doubtless be a sucress without his pres ence, and it were better, perhaps, for the people to purine their avocations these bard times, than to rash to Atlanta to see a popular President. One of the most dis gusting of all human frailties is lta uncon querable tendency to man-worahlp.” The South ha, voted solidly for twenty years the Democratic t'cket in order to rid herself of the Republican harpies who prey opon her peace and retard her progress. If the end to which she has labored be not •ccompliebed alter success has crowned her solidity, the States that make up the South will align themselvei with the fao tions that hold out the heat offers. This Is why Southern Democrats stand flatfooted now and demand that a change be In every office that shields a Republican South o! the line. I will require no mjre proof of partisanship in these selections than the affirmation of knowV'e on the part of a Representative or Senator that tho postmaster has bfen an acti/e eiitor or proprietor of a Republics i newspaper printing oflenstve articles, easily i-howjUjy slips: or a stumn sj-eakc*, or member^ a political committee, or (.(licf-r of a cam paign club, or organizer of political meet ings, or that his office has been made the headquarters of political work, or that his clerks have been put into the perfo*raance of political duties. Poisibly other acts of equal force may be noted in some cases. U the Representative does not know the fact, It should be established by some af fidavit of some person whom he cm affirm to be of unquestioned credibility, or by some documentary evidence. In recommending for appointment, I beg the Representative will state the age, bntine(8 and what kind of onsineta expe rience, and a description of the business character of the applicant, and also of bia habits nnd standing iu the community. It would be well to tile evidence showing that he will be satiafactary to the community, and when there are various candidates I •ball be obliged by any explanation which the Representative can give. This necessarily imposes a little trouble, and yet not very great, but it seems to me reasonable to require very extraordinary caro and troabla enough to be taken to represent the facts. The earln st removals and appointments of this kind will chal lenge the keenest scrutiny. The former mait be juitifiible and the latter beyond criticism. Some mistakes have peroaps occurred, and our adversaries are keei ly interested to make the most of every fault, because they have perceived n strong cur rent of general Hpprobation of the purposes of the administration. In rendering this justics to our people which consists of the removal of enemies :r .1 Mib'ititiiti'm of our friemh, I ;»•<•! that It is very desirable to proc« ed with extreme care, and that I am correctly representing the President’s wishes and purpofd in earnestly Bollciting that every step may be taken accordingly. I may add that as the common good is infinitely beyond the wel fare of auy one person, however great his place, so appointments to further a mere personal < nd, ehould be absolutely forbid den, and recommendations upon that basis may well expect disfavor. 1 shall very willingly take up the case ot any district or of any county, whenever they are ready; andXlballbi glad if the Representative can personally attend and go over them. Papers ahoola be tent in as coon as poss hie, and will bo then careful ly briefed in the department; and when bo made ready appointments can be nude with great rapidity. Should you think it desirable to have a personal conference belore this is begun, I shall be very glad to meet the delega tion. Bnt as I have felt It desirable to relieve thamof unnecessary Journey leg and ex pense, I have written a similar letter to etich Representative from Ohio, and re- npectfully solicited reaponiive notion in ac cordance with the spirit of it.
